Description: The structure and variability of pelagic food webs along the north and northwestern shelf of the Iberian Peninsula were analysed using natural abundance of nitrogen stable isotopes of plankton and pelagic consumers. Plankton composition was mainly studied in size-fractionated samples, but also the isotopic signatures of three copepod species, as representative of primary consumers, were considered. Several fish species were included as planktivorous consumers, with special attention to sardine (Sardina pilchardus). Finally, top pelagic consumers were represented by the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis). The relationship between trophic position and body size implies large variability in the ratio of predator to prey sizes, likely because widespread omnivory and plankton consumption by relatively large predators. Planktivorous species share a common trophic position, suggesting potential competition for food, and low nitrogen isotope enrichment between prey and consumers suggest nutrient limitation and recycling at the base of the food web. Both experimental and field evidences indicate that the muscle of sardine integrates fish diet over seasonal periods and reflects the composition of plankton from large shelf areas. The low mobility of sardines during periods of low population size is consistent with differential isotopic signatures found in shelf zones characterised by upwelling nutrient inputs.

Notes: Ionic species obtained by electron impact on (OCS)n clusters produced by expansion of OCS mixed with argon at two different (OCS/argon) concentrations are studied as a function of stagnation pressure and electron energy. Ionization efficiency curves of homogeneous cluster ions (OCS)+n, homogeneous sulfur cluster ions S+m and inhomogeneous ions (OCS)nS+m are analyzed. Several reactions paths, ending in S+m, have been identified. The strong correlation between reaction path and cluster size is discussed. Finally, by minimization of the potential function created by dipole–dipole, dipole–quadrupole, and quadrupole–quadrupole interactions between OCS molecules, we propose the geometrical configurations of neutral (OCS)n (n=2–5) clusters. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background Although it is commonly accepted that the immune response is affected by malnutrition there are very few data about its effect in allergie diseases. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of malnutrition in allergic lung inflammation. Methods An anaphylactic reaction was induced in rat lungs and the increased vascular permeability was measured in the trachea, internal and external bronchi and parenchyma by the Evans blue extravasation method. These studies were conducted in two dietary groups: one fed a normoproteic diet (18%) and the other a hypoproteie diet (4.5%). When the animals were 60 days old the group fed the hypoproteie diet presented a reduction of 77.86% in bodyweight, 63.3% in food intake and 36% in plasma protein concentration characterizing a severe protein-calorie malnutrition. Results The anaphylactic reaction in the lungs induced a significant increase in vascular permeability in the trachea and bronchi of both dietary groups. However, the intensity of this effect was significantly lower in the malnourished group. Analysis of immunoglobulin isotypes in the serum by ELISA showed that whereas IgG1 and IgG2a levels were similar in both groups, the levels of IgE were significantly lower in the malnourished animals. Moreover, the levels of antigen-specific IgG1, IgG2a and IgE were all significantly inhibited by the protein-calorie malnutrition. When antibodies were passively transfered to the malnourished rats, they developed a reaction as intense as the normoproteic group. Conclusions These results suggest that the capacity to release infiammatory mediators and the vascular response to these mediators is not affected by this type of malnutrition and, therefore, the diminished response of the airways reported here is probably due to the lower levels of anaphylactie antibodies produeed by the malnourished rats.

Notes: Clinical and hislological data from 8 trichilemmal carcinomas are reviewed. The tumors occurred mainly on sun-exposed skin of the face of elderly people as small solitary, frequently ulcerated nodules. Histologically, they consisted of multilobulate, infiltrative growths, connected to the epidermis and piloscbaceous structures and showing features reminiscent of the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. The presence of lobules of clear, glycogen-rich cells with peripheral palisading, hyaline basement membranes, trichilemmal keratinization, and abortive follicular sheaths and the absence of ductal or acinar differentiation allow distinction from other clear cell tumors of the skin. Although the histological picture suggests a high-grade malignant neoplasm, trichilemmal carcinoma has an indolent course. No recurrence or metastases have been observed.

Notes: The growth of crown-gall cells cultured in vitro (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. White Burley and Parthenocissus tricuspidata cv. Veitchii) is inhibited by alstonine (BG-8), a plant alkaloid, the anti-cancer effect of which has previously been demonstrated on animals and plants. The growth of normal cells is only slightly affected. The inhibitory effect of BG-8 on crown-gall cells is antagonized by indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) added to the culture medium. Kinetin associated with IAA does not prevent this inhibitory effect. BG-8 present in the culture medium containing the two types of hormones seems to modify the later hormonal requirement of Parthenocissus crown-gall tissues.BG-8 exhibits high binding affinity for crown-gall DNA and, therefore, strongly inhibits its in vitro synthesis. The alkaloid has practically no effect on DNA from healthy cells. The inhibition by BG-8 is dependent on the level of DNA strand separation and on the origin and nature of the tissues (crown-gall DNA is more destabilized than healthy DNA; DNA from habituated tissues is intermediate). IAA and kinetin have opposite effects on the in vitro strand separation of the DNAs from crown-gall cells and, consequently, antagonistic effects on DNA replication (IAA stimulates and kinetin inhibits). It is possible to establish a close relationship between in situ development of crown-gall tissues of the two species studied (in the presence or absence of BG-8 or cell-growth factors), in vitro DNA synthesis and DNA strand separation.
