Notes: A generalization of the reduced density matrix theory when the number of particles is not fixed is given here. The first and second order reduced density matrices are defined with respect to a Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer ground state for molecules with an even number of electrons. This formalism is extended to molecules with an odd number of electrons. Valatin's generalized Hartree-Fock method is applied to the functional of energy. A new one-particle operator, V(circumflex)q, is thus obtained. This operator has two new terms. It takes into account all the correlation effects mainly through a new non-local potential L(circumflex)q — the Exchange and Time Inversion Potential. The operator V(circumflex)q thus correlates the motion of two particles with anti-parallel spins and determines a new set of spin-orbitals. The new set of equations is established and solved by using the MO-LCAO approximation. The method was tested for several molecules with good results. The calculated vertical ionization potentials compare satisfactorily with the experimental data. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Fermentation conditions were developed in order to achieve simultaneously a high biomass concentration and high-level expression of a hybrid cI-human insulin B peptide gene. In our system, this hybrid gene is under control of the Escherichia coli trp promoter, in a trp − derivative strain of E. coli W3110. The dual role of tryptophan concentration on cellular growth and hybrid gene regulation was studied in 10-l batch fermentations. In the best batch conditions, a biomass concentration of 12 g dry weight/l can be obtained, and 0.53 g/l of cI-insulin B hybrid protein is produced. Tryptophan in the culture medium is consumed by the growing culture, until a level is reached that causes induction of the hybrid gene. Plasmid loss was detected, as only 62% of the cells retained the recombinant plasmid. In order to increase the hybrid protein production level, a fed-batch culture strategy was developed whereby the specific growth rate of the cells was restrained. Using the same amount of nutrients as in the batch fermentations, it was possible to increase the final biomass concentration to 20 g/l, plasmid-bearing cells in the population to 90% and recombinant hybrid protein to 1.21 g/l.

Notes: Abstract Global warming due to an anticipated doubling of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is expected to alter the earth's climate system within the next century. The potential changes in the climate system could affect hydrological cycles and processes. Possible impacts of climate change on water resources should be assessed to evaluate probable adaptation measures. In the Philippines, a preliminary assessment of the vulnerability of water resources to climate change and variability was undertaken. For this particular study, the Angat Reservoir was chosen as the study area. Because of its socioeconomic importance, it is useful to assess its vulnerability to climate change. A rainfall-runoff simulation model, WATBAL, was used to determine the effect of temperature and rainfall changes, based on CO2 doubling, on inflow to the reservoir. Climate change scenarios developed from results from three general circulation models and incremental changes were used. The results showed that changes in temperature and rainfall could affect runoff either positively or negatively. Using the temperature and rainfall changes from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory model there was a 32% increase in runoff, and with the Canadian Climate Centre Model, there was a 15% decrease in runoff. Under a climate scenario generated by the United Kingdom Meteorological Office model, runoff is estimated to increase by 5%. The use of incremental scenarios revealed the strong sensitivity of runoff to changes in rainfall as compared with changes in temperature.

Description: In recent sampling along the Colombian Caribbean coast, three species of the genus Plesionika (P. gigliolii, P. longicauda, and P. willesi) have been added to the seven reported upon by Campos et al. (in press). P. gigliolii is now recorded for the first time from the West Atlantic. The taxonomic status of P. acanthonotus is discussed. A key to the Atlantic species of Plesionika is provided.

Description: A new range extension of Palicus floridanus and five new records of Palicidae are presented, the samples are collected from the Colombian Caribbean coast during the cruise of INVEMAR-Macrofauna I between 1998 and 1999, along the upper continental Slope (300 and 500 m deep). Six species have now been recorded from the area: P. alternatus Rathbun, 1897; P. cursor A. Milne- Edwards, 1880; P. floridanus Rathbun, 1918; P. gracilipes A. Milne-Edwards, 1880; P. gracilis Smith, 1883, and P. sicus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880. Previously, P. alternatus was the only member of the family reported for this area before this study.

Description: Four surveys were conducted between October 1998 and April 1999 along the upper section of the Colombian Caribbean Sea continental slope with the aim of compliting marine fauna inventories. During the surveys (INVEMAR-MACROFAUNA 1) individuals of the shrimps Parapontocaris caribbaea, P. vicina, Prionocrangon pectinata and Parapontophilus gracilis (Decapoda: Crangonidae) were found and are herein registered for the first time in Colombian waters. Along with the description of the collected material and reference to site of collection, identification keys, diagnostic characters, diagrams and bathimetric and geographic distribution are included as well as comments on morphological variations of the individuals.
Description: LMO2 was discovered via chromosomal translocations in T-cell leukaemia and shown normally to be essential for haematopoiesis. LMO2 is made up of two LIM only domains (thus it is a LIM-only protein) and forms a bridge in a multi-protein complex. We have studied the mechanism of formation of this complex using a single domain antibody fragment that inhibits LMO2 by sequestering it in a non-functional form. The crystal structure of LMO2 with this antibody fragment has been solved revealing a conformational difference in the positioning and angle between the two LIM domains compared with its normal binding. This contortion occurs by bending at a central helical region of LMO2. This is a unique mechanism for inhibiting an intracellular protein function and the structural contusion implies a model in which newly synthesized, intrinsically disordered LMO2 binds to a partner protein nucleating further interactions and suggests approaches for therapeutic targeting of LMO2.
