    Notes: Abstract In order to assess the effect of suckling regime on calf growth and milk yield and offtake of zebu cattle in Mali, 59 zebu cow–calf pairs were allocated to suckling regimes: RI, cows were milked ‘completely’ and the milk was bottle-fed ad libitum to their calves; RII, calves were suckled ad libitum by their dams prior to milking; RIII, cows were milked ‘partially’ then allowed to suckle their calves; RIV, ad libitum suckling of calves prior to milking during the first three months of lactation and partial milking prior to suckling thereafter. The highest lactation milk yield (1150.6 kg) and offtake (647.6 kg), but the poorest calf growth (261 g/d to weaning) were observed in RIII. RIV significantly improved calf growth, 310 g/d, while allowing a milk offtake of 294.4 kg.

    Notes: Summary.  The use of a panel of polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against West African isolates of rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) in ELISA resulted in separation of 73 RYMV isolates into three distinct serogroups. Using a set of differential rice varieties, the serogroups could be correlated to two RYMV pathotypes. A relationship was found between serological properties of the RYMV isolates and their probable ecological origin. It was concluded that RYMV isolates originating in closely related agro-ecological zones displayed variability in coat protein and pathogenicity. This should be taken into account in developing tolerant or resistant rice varieties.

    Description: Three high-resolution ocean circulation models of the North Atlantic, differing chiefly in their description of the vertical coordinate, are used to examine the ventilation of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. All the models produce mode waters of realistic densities in the Sargasso Sea and the European Basin, but have Azores Currents of differing strengths, which are categorised as strong (of realistic transport), intermediate, and weak. These differences have a critical impact upon the ventilation of the gyre. Most importantly, the strong Azores Current forms an effective barrier to the southward ventilation of Eastern North Atlantic Water from the northern European Basin, initially driving it southwestwards into the central gyre, before turning it back eastwards again in a general cyclonic circulation north of the Current. The intermediate and weak Azores Currents instead allow the southward ventilation of this water mass near the European and African coasts. The situation in Nature appears to be intermediate between these two cases, with the Azores Current acting as a partial block. The study also raises the possibility of the Azores Current forming an advective connection between the Sargasso Sea Mode Waters in the western basin and modes of similar densities found in the eastern basin on the southern side of the Current. Although there are high levels of variability in the extent of these lighter modes in the eastern basin in Nature, this postulate is supported by a number of observational studies. In addition, the present study also provides some support for the local production of Madeira Mode Water in the eastern basin, associated with retroflecting current branches on the southern side of the Azores Current. Overall, the Azores Current is, therefore, likely to have a critical impact upon the ventilation of the subtropical gyre over a large area, rather than just locally, affecting the potential vorticity and density structure of the upper ocean between subtropical latitudes and the northern European Basin. The study also contributes to an ongoing community effort to assess the realism of our current generation of ocean models.

    Description: The success of vector control strategies aiming to decrease disease transmission via the release of sterile or genetically-modified male mosquitoes critically depends on mating between laboratory-reared males and wild females. Unfortunately, mosquito colonization, laboratory rearing, and genetic manipulations can all negatively affect male competitiveness. Heterosis is commonly used to produce domestic animals with enhanced vigor and homogenous genetic background and could therefore potentially improve the mating performance of mass-reared male mosquitoes. Here, we produced enhanced hybrid males of the malaria mosquito Anopheles coluzzii by crossing two strains colonized 〉35 and 8 years ago. We compared the amount of sperm and mating plug proteins they transferred to females, as well as their insemination rate, reproductive success and longevity under various experimental conditions. Across experiments, widespread adaptations to laboratory mating were detected in the older strain. In large-group mating experiments, no overall hybrid advantage in insemination rates and the amount of sperm and accessory gland proteins transferred to females was detected. Despite higher sperm activity, hybrid males did not appear more fecund. However, individual-male mating and laboratory-swarm experiments revealed that hybrid males, while inseminating fewer females than older inbred males, were significantly more fertile, producing larger mating plugs and drastically increasing female fecundity. Heterotic males also showed increased longevity. These results validate the use of heterosis for creating hybrid males with improved fitness from long-established inbred laboratory strains. Therefore, this simple approach could facilitate disease control strategies based on male mosquito releases with important ultimate benefits to human health.

    Description: ABSTRACT Observational analyses of changing climate extremes over the West Africa region have been limited by the availability of long and high-quality datasets. To help address this gap, a climate extremes indices workshop was held in the Gambia in December 2011 with participants from 14 West African countries. The resulting analysis utilized 15 annual indices derived from observed daily temperatures and 10 annual indices derived from observed daily precipitation. The analysis was conducted for 166 meteorological stations in 13 countries for 2 periods: 1960–2010 and 1981–2010. The analyses of trends in the annual mean temperature indices have identified statistically significant increases of 0.16 °C/decade and 0.28 °C/decade for mean annual maximum and mean annual minimum temperatures, respectively, averaged over all available land stations in the region during the last 50 years. The seasonal-temperature-related indices show significant patterns of warming in all seasons. The annual mean of daily minimum temperature has increased more than the annual mean of daily maximum temperature leading to a decreasing trend in the diurnal temperature range. Warm days and warm nights have become more frequent, and cold days and cold nights have become less frequent. The analyses of precipitation-based indices indicate spatially non-coherent changes throughout the study area with few statistically significant trends over the longer period. Exceptions to this are the simple daily intensity index and maximum 5-day precipitation, which show significant increasing regional trends over both the shorter and longer periods. Additionally, over the recent period (1981–2010) most of the precipitation related indices show significant trends towards wetter conditions. However, this period of increased rainfall follows a decade of significantly drier conditions in the region – it is not clear whether the recent upward trends reflect the ‘recovery’ from this long drought period or represents a long-term response to warming. Climate extremes indices were derived from daily temperature and precipitation data from 166 observing stations in 13 West African countries, and combined to provide a regional assessment of changing extremes for 1960–2010 and 1981–2010. Statistically significant warming trends indicate more frequent warm days and nights and less frequent cold days and nights. Precipitation-based indices indicate weak spatial patterns with few significant trends over 1960–2010, but over 1981–2010 show significant trends towards wetter conditions.

    Description: The African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae is diversifying into ecotypes known as M and S forms. This process is thought to be promoted by adaptation to different larval habitats, but its genetic underpinnings remain elusive. To identify candidate targets of divergent natural selection in M and S, we performed genomewide scanning in paired population samples from Mali, followed by resequencing and genotyping from five locations in West, Central, and East Africa. Genome scans revealed a significant peak of M-S divergence on chromosome 3L, overlapping five known or suspected immune response genes. Resequencing implicated a selective target at or near the TEP1 gene, whose complement C3-like product has antiparasitic and antibacterial activity. Sequencing and allele-specific genotyping showed that an allelic variant of TEP1 has been swept to fixation in M samples from Mali and Burkina Faso and is spreading into neighboring Ghana, but is absent from M sampled in Cameroon, and from all sampled S populations. Sequence comparison demonstrates that this allele is related to, but distinct from, TEP1 alleles of known resistance phenotype. Experimental parasite infections of advanced mosquito intercrosses demonstrated a strong association between this TEP1 variant and resistance to both rodent malaria and the native human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Although malaria parasites may not be direct agents of pathogen-mediated selection at TEP1 in nature—where larvae may be the more vulnerable life stage—the process of adaptive divergence between M and S has potential consequences for malaria transmission.
