Notes: The interaction of hdyrogenated Si(001) surfaces is studied by means of molecular dynamics using an empirical potential. Above a certain critical external force covalent bonds may be formed between the surfaces even at room temperature, leaving a hydrogenated interface. The critical force is related to the assumptions of the molecular dynamics, thus scaling with the potential, heat transfer, boundary conditions, and the weak long-range interaction omitted. Below this critical force, the hydrogen–hydrogen interactions prevent covalent bonding. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a novel diagnostic technique for weakly nonideal laser-produced plasma (LPP) plumes, based entirely on the continuum, and present the result for aluminum plasma. Due to significant self-absorption, the analysis is carried out in close coupling with plasma equilibrium calculations. We first invoke scaling relations linking the time- and position-resolved specific continuum intensity I, integrated over the spectral range of a streak camera, to the local temperature T and pressure p: T=STIα and p=SpIα+β. Inversion of the two-dimensional luminosity profile into the specific continuum intensity profile (three-dimensional) is carried out self-consistently, subject to the 16 independent measurements: target mass loss, energy deposited into the LPP plume and laser beam attenuation at fundamental and its harmonic frequencies, all at four different laser energies. An agreement to within 6.1% of the measurements overall has been achieved with α=0.45±0.03, β=1.0±0.03, ST=0.190±0.003 and Sp=340±5. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Wafer bonding of commercial 4 in. silicon wafers has been performed at room temperature under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. After local initiation of the bonding process the bonding area is self-propagating just as in the case of wafer bonding under atmospheric conditions. The room-temperature bonded wafers, without any additional heat treatment show a bonding strength typical for bulk material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The possibility of bonding clean diamond surfaces covalently in ultrahigh vacuum is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations based on a tight binding model. Our simulations predict that strong covalent bonding is possible for C(001)-2×1 surfaces. C(111)-2×1 surfaces will bond very weakly and debond already at moderate temperatures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: On the first of January 1992, unusual earthquake activity started in Steigen, northern Norway. By 31 December, 1992, a total of 207 events had been recorded in several pulses. Among these, several events with magnitudes larger than 3.0 (Mc) were also felt by the people. The epicentral distribution of these events seems to suggest that they all are concentrated in a small region (approximately 10 km in diameter) in the Brennvika Bay (67.8°N, 14.9°E), between Leinesfjorden in the north and Nordfolda in the south. The distribution of events in time is characteristic of a swarm in which no dear evidence of a mainshock–aftershock sequence was observed. Macroseismic intensity surveys as well as synthetic modelling indicate shallow focal depths in the range 5–8 km. Based on a composite focal mechanism, indicating an oblique-slip fault striking NE with a normal component dipping NW, combined with an observed NE trend in the epicentres and the focal depths, these events correlate with a previously proposed fault zone along Nordfolda. The NE trend has been dominant in the area throughout geological time, starting from the Caledonian Orogeny to the post-Caledonian basin developments, as well as the post-glacial and neotectonic structural features. At present, the deep-seated structural anomaly underneath the Lofoten Ridge seems to be the major factor controlling the structural trends in the area. The activity along the Nordfolda fault zone could be related to this large-scale structure, although the causes of the stresses that would create the seismic activity are not very clear, as there are several possible stress-generating mechanisms involved, such as post-glacial uplift of the land masses, the ‘ridge-push’ effect from Mohn's Ridge, and vertical stresses generated by the sediment loading in the adjacent basins.

Notes: : A combinatorial optimization procedure for best management practice (BMP) placement at the watershed level facilitates selection of cost effective BMP scenarios to control non point source (NFS) pollution. A genetic algorithm (GA) was selected from among several optimization heuristics. The GA combines an optimization component written in the C++ language with spatially variable NFS pollution prediction and economic analysis components written within the Arc View geographic information system. The procedure is modular in design, allowing for component modifications while maintaining the basic conceptual framework. An objective function was developed to lexicographically optimize pollution reduction followed by cost increase. Scenario cost effectiveness is then calculated for scenario comparisons. The NPS pollutant fitness score allows for evaluation of multiple pollutants, based on prioritization of each pollutant. The economic component considers farm level public and private costs, cost distribution, and land area requirements. Development of a sediment transport function, used with the Universal Soil Loss Equation, allows the optimization procedure to run within a reasonable timeframe. The procedure identifies multiple near optimal solutions, providing an indication of which fields have a more critical impact on overall cost effectiveness and flexibility in the final solution selected for implementation. The procedure was demonstrated for a 1,014-ha watershed in the Ridge and Valley physiographic region of Virginia.
