Notes: Efferent modulation of auditory input at the level of the brainstem during attention-demanding tasks has been described in animal studies. Attempts to demonstrate these effects in humans have produced conflicting results, however. These studies are reviewed with particular reference to those animal experiments that have demonstrated peripheral effects. The human experiments have used a number of attentional conditions which have not been related either to each other or to the successful animal work. Two of the most important conditions in these studies–the use of an intermodal attention task and the manipulation of attentional states–have been examined rarely or not at all in the human research. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the possibility of attention-related effects on the human brainstem auditory evoked potential. These experiments were designed to examine experimental conditions common to both successful and unsuccessful attempts to demonstrate attention-driven efferent modulation at the periphery in humans. Also examined was the gradation of attention effects on efferent modulation demonstrated in animals but never studied in humans. No significant changes in either the latency or the amplitude of the brainstem auditory evoked potential were found in any of the attention-demanding conditions. Results are discussed in terms of psychophysiological theories of attention. Also, the interpretation of the most recent animal work is questioned.

Notes: The evidence for ERP manifestations of contralateral dominance in the auditory pathways is not entirely compelling. The effect when found has involved either latency or amplitude of a variety of components obtained from averaged or subtraction waveforms. Also, the effect appears to have as much to do with hemisphere as pathway differences. The objectives of this experiment were to establish whether a specific ERP peak reflected contralateral dominance, to assess its long-term stability, and to clarify the apparent pathway-hemisphere interactions which result from monaural stimulation. Ten male subjects were tested on 6 occasions (generally weekly intervals). On each occasion, 76 monaural tones were presented while EEG was recorded at C2, P2, T3, and T4 referred to linked earlobes. P70, N120, and P200 peak amplitudes and latencies and N1–P2 amplitudes were examined. N120 amplitudes proved to be larger at the temporal site contralateral to the ear stimulated. This contralateral dominance effect was observed on all 6 occasions for right ear stimuli and on all but one occasion for left ear stimuli. N1–P2 amplitudes less reliably reflected contralateral dominance because possible hemisphere effects appeared with this measure. Methodological issues related to assessment of ERP contralateral dominance and to the variety of effects seen in the literature are discussed. The data are examined with reference to neurophysiological substrates thought to underlie auditory ERPs. Finally, the utility of a stable ERP phenomenon in assessing drug or pathology effects is evaluated.

Notes: Two experiments using 12 male subjects were conducted to study the effects of stimulus information on the amplitude and habituation of the electrodermal orienting response (OR). Visual stimuli which could be varied along information, contour, and symmetry dimensions were presented. In the first experiment, 2 series of 10 different stimuli each were presented; 1 series was characterized by high information and high contour, the other by low information and low contour. No difference in OR habituation between the 2 series was found. In the second experiment, the 2 series of stimuli were again presented with 3 test stimuli inserted at Trials 3, 6 and 9. Test stimuli differed from habituation stimuli by symmetry or information and/or contour. Changes in stimulus information or contour, but not symmetry, resulted in OR recovery. OR recovery did not result in dishabituation of the following stimuli. Results are interpreted as favoring an information processing model of OR habituation. Findings suggest that laws governing habituation processes under conditions of identical stimulus presentations may differ from those operating when stimuli are variable.

Notes: Abstract The Cantor et al. (1997) study on under-reporting of suicide raises manyimportant issues. Previous studies have raised similar concerns. This isparticularly relevant because the government of Ireland appointed a TaskForce on Suicide which is currently deliberating on all aspects of suicideand attempted suicide. This comment concludes that there is a greater needto clarify the problem of under-reporting of suicide in Ireland.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the authors establish the rates of suicide for the Countyof Mayo, Ireland, through an examination of the coroners files. The rate ofsuicide, thus established, was found to be higher than that obtained fromofficial suicide mortality data. In addition, the average suicide rate forthe county was found to be higher than the national average for the periodof the study. No significant increase in suicide was found for Mayo, although, in the period studied the national rate increased steadily. In theauthors opinion 32.6% of the Mayo deaths were miscoded. The greatestmiscoding was of death by drowning. In addition, it was found that7.3% of the deaths classified as suicide by the authors had neverbeen officially registered. The data were analysed on a number ofdemographic factors. In Mayo the most common method of suicide for bothsexes was by drowning. For the country as a whole, the most common methodfor men was hanging and for women drowning.

Notes: Abstract The effects of oxazepam (30 mg), lorazepam (2 mg), and placebo on implicit and explicit memory were studied in two testing cycles, 100 and 170 min after drug administration. Thirty healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three groups (placebo, oxazepam, or lorazepam) in a double-blind, independent groups design. Drug groups were equivalent prior to drug administration on a variety of cognitive measures. Following drug administration, both oxazepam and lorazepam equally impaired performance on a cued-recall explicit memory task relative to placebo, at both testing cycles. Relative to placebo, lorazepam markedly impaired priming on a word-stem completion implicit memory task, at both testing cycles. Consistent with previous work, oxazepam failed to produce impairments in priming on the word-stem completion task at 100 min post-drug administration. However, oxazepam was found significantly to impair priming on this latter task relative to placebo, at close to theoretical peak plasma concentration (i.e., 170 min post-drug administration). Explanations for the observed detrimental effect of oxazepam on implicit memory task performance are considered, including: possible time-dependent effects related to the relative rate of absorption of these two benzodiazepines (BZs); and potential contamination of the implicit memory task by explicit memory strategies during the second testing cycle.

Notes: The distal femoral growth plate has a uniquely convoluted structure comprised of four mammillate processes. Factors contributing to the development of these processes and overall plate geometry were explored using three-dimensional image analysis of the canine distal femoral epiphysis. The growth plate at birth remains relatively flat until ossification of the epiphysis begins at 1 week of age. Epiphyseal ossification proceeds eccentrically, projecting in the medial-lateral and anterior-posterior directions. Growth plate activity indexed by [3H]thymidine labeling and plate thickness revealed regional differences in cell proliferation. This was measured as a decreased labeling index and thinning of the growth plate in areas capped by the ossifying epiphysis. The eccentric ossification pattern and associated variations in growth plate activity result in definition of an “intraphyseal” groove and medial-lateral oriented sulcus. The groove and sulcus bisect the plate into four quadrants, giving rise to a convoluted structure composed of four areas of plate elevations termed mammillary processes (MP). By 5 weeks, the pattern of ossification results in greater development of the MP in the anterior-medial quadrant and in decreasing order, in the posterior-medial, anterior, and posterior-lateral quadrants. By 10 weeks, a uniform rate of cell proliferation was observed coincident with completion of ossification of the epiphysis. The data suggest that localized variations in growth plate proliferation are associated with ossification of the epiphysis. The eccentric pattern of this ossification may give rise to MP and a highly convoluted structure.
