    Notes: Abstract —In the last decade temporary teleseismic transects have become a powerful tool for investigating the crustal and upper mantle structure. In order to gain a clearer picture of the lithosphere-asthenosphere structure in peninsular Italy, between 1994 and 1996, we have deployed three teleseismic transects in northern, central, and southern Apennines, in the framework of the project GeoModAp (European Community contract EV5V-CT94–0464). Some hundreds of teleseisms were recorded at each deployment which lasted between 3 and 4 months. Although many analyses are still in progress, the availability of this high quality data allowed us to refine tomographic images of the lithosphere-asthenosphere structure with an improved resolution in the northern and central Apennines, and to study the deformation of the upper mantle looking at seismic anisotropy through shear-wave splitting analysis. Also, a study of the depth and geometry of the Moho through the receiver function technique is in progress. Tomographic results from the northernmost 1994 and the central 1995 teleseismic experiments confirm that a high-velocity anomaly (HVA) does exist in the upper 200–250 km and is confined to the northern Apenninic arc. This HVA, already interpreted as a fragment of subducted lithosphere is better defined by the new temporary data, compared to previous works, based only on data from permanent stations. No clear high-velocity anomalies are detected in the upper 250 km below the central Apennines, suggesting either a slab window due to a detachment below southern peninsular Italy, or a thinner, perhaps continental slab of Adriatic lithosphere not detectable by standard tomography. We found clear evidence of seismic anisotropy in the uppermost mantle, related to the main tectonic processes which affected the studied regions, either NE–SW compressional deformation of the lithosphere beneath the mountain belt, or arc-parallel asthenospheric flow (both giving NW–SE fast polarization direction), and successive extensional deformation (∼E–W trending) in the back-arc basin of northern Tyrrhenian and Tuscany. Preliminary results of receiver function studies in the northern Apennines show that the Moho depth is well defined in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic regions while its geometry underneath the mountain belt is not yet well constrained, due to the observed high complexity.

    Description: Alle ore 02.03 UTC di domenica 20 maggio 2012, la Rete Sismica Nazionale (RSN [Amato and Mele, 2008; Delladio, 2011]) dell’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) ha registrato un evento simico di magnitudo locale 5.9 che è stato avvertito in gran parte dell’Italia centro-settentrionale; l’evento è stato localizzato sotto la valle del Po in Emilia (44.89° N, 11.23° E e 6.3 km di profondità). Subito dopo la scossa principale, è stato attivato il Pronto Intervento Sismico dell’INGV al fine di installare una rete sismica temporanea ad integrazione delle stazioni permanenti già presenti in area epicentrale. Grazie alla collaborazione fra le sedi INGV di Ancona, Arezzo, Bologna, Irpinia (Grottaminarda), Milano, Pisa e Roma sono state installate 44 stazioni temporanee, di cui 10 in trasmissione real-time con la sala di sorveglianza simica della sede di Roma. Contemporaneamente altre 38 stazioni sismiche temporanee sono state inoltre installate dal Dipartimento della Protezione Civile – DPC (16 stazioni strong motion), dall’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale – OGS (8 stazioni stand-alone) e da enti francesi (14 stazioni stand-alone). In una seconda fase, l’8 giugno 2012, è stato attivato anche il Centro Operativo Emergenza Sismica (COES [Moretti et al., 2010a]), all’interno della Direzione di Comando e Controllo (Di.Coma.C.) del DPC predisposto presso l’Agenzia della Protezione Civile Regionale dell’Emilia Romagna (Bologna). L’allestimento e il coordinamento della struttura sono stati realizzati grazie alla collaborazione tra il Centro Nazionale Terremoti (CNT) e la Sezione di Bologna. Il COES ha garantito la comunicazione costante e diretta con i funzionari DPC presenti nell'area epicentrale. Allo stesso tempo, la struttura è stata proposta come supporto logistico per tutti i colleghi dell’INGV impegnati in attività nella zona epicentrale (reti sismiche Mobili, EMERSITO, GPS, EMERGEO, QUEST) e per sostenere il servizio dedicato alla “Comunicazione e Informazione” promosso a favore delle popolazioni colpite, degli operatori della protezione civile e dei volontari di soccorso. In questo lavoro saranno descritte le attività svolte nel primo mese di emergenza, le modalità e le tempistiche dell’intervento, le strutture coinvolte.

    Description: Il 6 aprile 2009 (3.32 locali) un terremoto di Mw 6,3 ha colpito la regione Abruzzo (Italia centrale) producendo un enorme danno alla città de L'Aquila e ai paesi limitrofi causando circa 300 morti e 60.000 senza fissa dimora. A seguito di questo evento sismico, la struttura di Pronto Intervento dell’INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), si è rapidamente attivata installando in area epicentrale due reti sismiche temporanee (Re.Mo.Tel. in real-time e Re.Mo. in stand-alone) ed il Centro Operativo Emergenza Sismica. In questo lavoro presentiamo come si e’ svolta la campagna sismica della Re.Mo., avente l’obiettivo di acquisire dati di alta qualità e dettaglio per studiare le sorgenti sismiche, l’evoluzione spazio temporale della sequenza e caratterizzare attraverso la microsismicita’ le strutture di faglia attivate ed le proprieta’ del mezzo circostante. Saranno descritte nel dettaglio l’installazione compiuta a poche ore dal mainshock, il suo sviluppo legato all’evoluzione della sequenza sismica, fino alla sua dismissione nel Marzo 2010.

    Description: In complex tectonics regions, seismological, geophysical, and geodynamic modeling require accurate definition of the Moho geometry. Various active and passive seismic experiments performed in the central Mediterranean region revealed local information on the Moho depth, in some cases used to produce interpolated maps. In this paper, we present a new and original map of the 3-D Moho geometry obtained by integrating selected high-quality controlled source seismic and teleseismic receiver function data. The very small cell size makes the retrieved model suitable for detailed regional studies, crustal corrections in teleseismic tomography, advanced 3-D ray tracing in regional earthquake location, and local earthquake tomography. Our results show the geometry of three different Moho interfaces: the European, Adriatic-Ionian, and Tyrrhenian. The three distinct Moho are fashioned following the Alpine and Apennines subduction, collision, and back-arc spreading and show medium- to high-frequency topographic undulations reflecting the complexity of the geodynamic evolution.

    Description: Following the 26 September 1997 Colforito earthquakes, seismicity occurred for several months along a normal fault system composed by several adjacent NW trending segments distributed from Gualdo Tadino, in the north, to Sellano in the south. Earthquakes were recorded by several temporary seismic networks. We joined data collected from about 100 permanent and temporary seismic stations for a total complete dataset of several thousands of afstershocks. We present high resolution 3-D images of the Umbria-Marche region (central Italy) as derived from the inversion of P and S wave arrival times from $\sim$2000 crustal earthquakes belonging to the seismic crisis. Moreover, from the 3-D location of earthquakes, $\sim$600 focal mechanisms have been calculated by using the first polarities method.

    Description: We have reconstrated the geometry of the Altotiberino Basin, near Sansepolcro based on the interpretation of a set of reflection seismic profiles. The profiles cross the basin from SW to NE and from NW to SE. The Southern section of the basin has been already analyzed because of crossed by the CROP-03 seismic profiles (Barchi et al., 1998).

    Description: A 3-D joint inversion of seismic and gravimetric data is performed to re-investigate the subsurface structure of Mt. Vesuvius (Italy) utilizing an improved joint inversion method. The aim is to derive models of the 3D distribution of velocity and density perturbations that are consistent with both data sets and with local velocity models. Mt. Vesuvius is a strato volcano located within a graben (Campania Plain) formed in Plio-Pleistocene. Campania Plain is bordered by mostly Mesozoic carbonaceous rocks. Mt. Vesuvius is the southernmost and the youngest of a group of Pleistocene volcanoes, three of which (Ischia, Campi Flegrei and Mt. Vesuvius) have erupted in historical times. The most recent eruption of Mt. Vesuvius occurred in 1944 and since then the volcanic activity has been characterized by moderate low magnitude seismicity and low temperature fumaroles at the summit crater. We modified the coupling mechanism between velocity and density models in the JI-3D optimized joint inversion method (Jordan and Achauer, 1999). This method was designed to provide stable and high resolution results and involves iterative optimized parameterization, 3D ray tracing, and the incorporation of a priori information. The coupling of the velocity and density models, vital to the joint inversion, is based on a cross-gradient approach (e.g. Gallardo and Meju, 2004), which has been proven to work very well in a variety of cases involving seismic, magnetic, CSEM, MT and gravity data sets. We implemented the cross-gradient coupling for our 3-D irregular adaptive grid parameterization. In contrast to conventional joint inversion methods this approach encourages structural similarities in the models and does not rely on predefined relationships between velocity and density parameters. As a consequence, the resulting velocity-density relations are not contaminated by a priori assumptions and can be utilized to derive rock physical parameters. We apply this method to data from the TomoVes project (Gasparini et al. 1998), combining seismics and Bouguer gravity and local high resolution velocity models as a priori information. The starting models for the joint inversion are derived by separate inversions of the individual data sets. We show 3D distributions of velocity perturbations and density variations from the joint inversion of teleseismic relative traveltimes and Bouguer anomaly data with the aim of extracting further information about the physical status of the volcano- tectonic system.

    Description: Si tratta dei pannelli della mostra "Terremoti: il segreto della Terra", inaugurata il 23 ottobre 2003 in occasione del Festival della Scienza di Genova (25 ottobre-22 novembre, Fiera di Genova). Questa mostra ha avuto 7200 visitatori. Nel 2004 sono stati utilizzati per la mostra "Terremoti e Attrazione Fatale", inaugurata il 28 ottobre 2004 in occasione del Festival della Scienza di Genova (28 ottobre-8 novembre 2004, Ex Manifattura dei Tabacchi, Sestri Ponente, Genova). Questa mostra ha avuto 5000 visitatori. Nel 2005 sono stati rielaborati per la mostra "Terra: viaggio nel cuore del Pianeta" realizzata, dal 4 al 22 maggio 2005, a Roma presso la sede dell’Istituto Superiore Antincendi in collaborazione con il Comune di Roma, la Provincia di Roma e il Corpo Nazionale dei Vigili del Fuoco. Questa mostra ha avuto 4400 visitatori. Nel 2006 sono stati utilizzati per la seconda edizione della mostra "Terra: viaggio nel cuore del Pianeta" realizzata, dal 22 aprile al 18 maggio 2006, a Roma presso la sede dell’Istituto Superiore Antincendi in collaborazione con il Comune di Roma, la Provincia di Roma, la Regione Lazio e il Corpo Nazionale dei Vigili del Fuoco.
