    Notes: Abstract The hydrothermal synthesis of zircon in a fluoride medium leads principally to two kinds of zircons, differentiated by their morphology, chemical composition, thermal stability and solubility. Differences in the thermodynamic parameters of solution (pH, temperature, [F−]) could explain the formation of these two kinds of zircons. The main hypothesis involves two crystallization mechanisms. Both include a step of gel dissolution with formation of soluble species that are responsible for the crystallization. In each case, the silicon species seem to be monomeric without fluorine. However, the nature of soluble zirconium species depends on the thermodynamic parameters of the solution. At acid pH and with fluoride ions, the reactive species for the crystallization seem to be fluoride rich zirconium complexes. In this case, the zircon obtained contains a large amount of fluoride presumably located in silicon sites (Zircon A). At basic pH, and whatever the concentration of fluoride, the reactive species for crystallization seems to be linear polymeric entities. In this case, the zircon obtained shows a typical morphology in the form of layered agglomerates and a high specific surface area (Zircon B).

    Notes: Abstract The appropriateness of the Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) technique for investigating Chondrus crispus Stackhouse populations in the Maritime Provinces of Canada was assessed. The AFLP procedure was first subjected to reproducibility testing and three shortcomings were noted: 1) failure to reproduce band intensity between replicate runs for the same individual and primer pair; 2) failure of some bands to replicate; 3) lack of reproducibility for complete replicate runs for some individuals and primer pairs. In the last-mentioned case, the lack of reproducibility resulted in characteristic electropherograms indicative of weak reactions. These weak runs can be attributed to poor restriction digest/ligation reactions and/or substandard PCR, these failures ultimately resulting from low and inconsistent DNA quality. We recommend that reproducibility testing should be completed routinely in studies using the AFLP technique. In the current work, only fragments and individuals that gave reproducible results were used in subsequent analyses. The AFLP method resulted in highly variable markers within and between the populations of C. crispus included in this investigation, which prevented successful resolution of population structure. This situation could result from a lack of suitability for AFLP markers in population genetic studies, and/or too extensive genetic variation for C. crispus populations to be discerned by the AFLP technique. These two possible explanations are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract For rapid growth and appropriate pigmentation,Porphyra requires the constant availability of nutrients, especially in summer when temperate waters are generally nutrient depleted. Cultivation near salmon cages allows the alleviation of this seasonal depletion by using the significant loading of fishf arms, which is then valued (wastes become fertilisers) and managed (competition for nutrients between desirable algal crops and problem species associated with severe disturbances). Porphyra,being an extremely efficient nutrient pump, is an excellent candidate for integrated aquaculture for bioremediation and economic diversification. Frequent harvesting provides for constant removal of significant quantities of nutrients from coastal waters, and for production of seaweeds of commercial value. The production of P. yezoensis being limited in the Gulf of Maine, an assessment of the potential of seven native north-west Atlantic Porphyra species is presently in progress. To enable the production of conchospores for net seeding, the phenology of these species and the conditions for their vegetative conchocelis exponential growth, conchosporangium induction, and conchospore maturation were determined. The development of integrated aquaculture systems is a positive initiative for optimising the efficiency of aquaculture operations, while maintaining the health of coastal waters.

    Notes: Abstract A recent PCR-based fingerprinting technique, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), was successfully applied to the red alga Chondrus crispus Stackh. This is apparently the first account to describe the application of AFLP methodology to an alga. Six isolates of C. crispus were analyzed by AFLP. A total of twenty-five primer pairs were screened and six primer pairs were selected for further investigation. Both conservative and variable markers were identified within and between populations; some markers were unique to individuals. As such, AFLP should prove useful as a source of genetic markers in algae for applications as diverse as genome mapping to population genetic investigations.

    Notes: Abstract The red alga Chondrus crispus (Irish moss) has been commercially harvested in Eastern Canada for almost 60 years. Its land-based tank aquaculture was initiated in the 1970s. In the 1990s, it became clear that production costs of these capital intensive systems were still too high for the carrageenan market but not for the production of edible seaweeds. Open-water aquaculture of cold-temperate species of carrageenophytes, and in particular of C. crispus, has rarely been attempted. This study re-examined the potential of the unique unattached and mostly vegetative population of C. crispus at Basin Head, in eastern Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), and at 5 transplant sites in western P.E.I. Basin Head plants were successfully transplanted to other sites, providing similar or different environmental conditions, and yielding comparable, or even higher, productivity. During the peak growth periods (May to end of June and autumn), daily growth rates (DGRs) between 3 and 4% d−1 were recorded at Basin Head and Freeland, with some plants exceeding 6% d−1. Over the whole study period (May to October), DGRs between 2 and 4% d−1 were lower than those reported for different species of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus alvarezii; they were, however, compensated for by extremely high carrageenan yields (between 58.1 and 71.0% DW) during the summer months when nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) levels in seawater and algal tissue were low. The DGRs could be increased by developing culture structures retaining fragmenting, but otherwise healthy, large distal clumps, lost with the present simple tying of plants on screens. Preliminary results demonstrated that transplantation and grow-out techniques are biologically successful, and that the Basin Head population of C. crispus has significant potential for open-water aquaculture in estuaries and basins of Atlantic Canada.

    Description: Aquaculture of extractive species, such as bivalves and macroalgae, already supplies a large amount of the production consumed worldwide, and further production is steadily increasing. Moving aquaculture operations off the coast as well as combining various uses at one site, commonly called multi-use aquaculture, is still in its infancy. Various projects worldwide, pioneered in Germany and later accompanied by other European projects, such as in Belgium, The Netherlands, Norway, as well as other international projects in the Republic of Korea and the USA, to name a few, started to invest in robust technologies and to investigate in system design needed that species can be farmed to market size in high energy environments. There are a few running enterprises with extractive species offshore, however, multi-use scenarios as well as offshore IMTA concepts are still on project scale. This will change soon as the demand is dramatically increasing and space is limited.

    Description: By moving away from coastal waters and hence reducing pressure on nearshore ecosystems, offshore aquaculture can be seen as a possible step towards the large-scale expansion of marine food production. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) in nearshore water bodies has received increasing attention and could therefore play a role in the transfer of aquaculture operations to offshore areas. IMTA holds scope for multi-use of offshore areas and can bring environmental benefits from making use of waste products and transforming these into valuable co-products. Furthermore, they may act as alternative marine production systems and provide scope for alternative income options for coastal communities, e.g., by acting as nodes for farm operation and maintenance requirements. This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge on the implications of the exposed nature of offshore and open ocean sites on the biological, technological and socio-economic performance of IMTA. Of particular interest is improving knowledge about resource flows between integrated species in hydrodynamic challenging conditions that characterize offshore waters.
