Description / Table of Contents: Résumé On montre que l'effet d'un gradient de la température radial sur le problème de stabilité de Taylor pour un fluide viscoélastique est semblable à celui d'un fluide Newtonien.
Notes: Summary It has been found that the effect of a radial temperature gradient on the Taylor stability problem for a viscoelastic fluid and for a Newtonian fluid is the same.

Notes: Summary The steady flow of an incompressible micropolar fluid between two rotating eccentric spheres is investigated. The solution is obtained by perturbation techniques by expanding the spin and velocity fields in power series of the eccentricity and the Reynolds number. The effects of the coupling number, the length ratio, the eccentricity and the relative rotational speeds of the spheres on the flow behaviour are investigated.

Notes: Summary The problem of the availability of boundary conditions in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics is briefly reviewed. The flow with suction over a flat plate of differential, integral, and hierarchy types of fluids is studied. It is concluded that while differential and integral models, with physically motivated conditions, give unique solutions, the hierarchy model gives rise to non-uniqueness. An alternate method which provides a better approximate solution for a hierarchy model is suggested.

Notes: Abstract By considering the now in a slider bearing to be a nearly viscometric flow we have examined the effects of variation in viscosity, and normal stress differences on the total resistance and total normal force. We have found that under certain conditions the normal stress differences may be neglected compared with the variation in viscosity. We have found that the effects of variation in viscosity are to reduce the total resistance, and to increase or decrease the total normal force depending on the ratio of the thickness of the liquid at the entry and exit.

Notes: Abstract Consideration is given to the stability of planePoiseuille flow of a slightly viscoelastic fluid which has a constant viscosity and normal stress differences varying nearly with the shear rate. It is shown that the presence of elasticity lowers the criticalReynolds number at which instability occurs.

Notes: Abstract A new formulation of non-affine motion for the network model is proposed and its applications are presented in this manuscript. The major improvement is that a finite elongational viscosity is predicted for finite elongational rates contrary to the infinite elongational viscosities existing at some elongational rates predicted by previous network models. Comparisons with experimental data of the shear viscosity, normal stress coefficient and elongational viscosity are given, in terms of the same set of model parameters. Model predictions for the stress growth are also shown.

Notes: Abstract The stress relaxation function after steady shear flow and the stress growth function at inception of steady flow are derived for several constitutive equations of the integral and differential types. Relationships between these functions are deduced and discussed.

Notes: The kinetic theory proposed by Soong and Liu for describing the rheological properties of structured fluids has been extended to predict shear-thinning, shear-thickening, thixotropy, and antithixotropy in different ranges of shear rates. Viscoelastic properties, as given by the Gordon-Schowalter Maxwell model, with a non-constant modulus, have also been considered. The theoretical predictions are compared with the predictions of a model used by Ait-Kadi, et al. (1988), for a hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solution containing 20 g/1 of NaCl. the predictions and experimental data for the viscosity and primary normal stress coefficient are in reasonably good agreement. The stress growth functions have also been calculated and have been found to be consistent with experimental observations.

Notes: The deformation of nylon drops in polyethylene, with and without an interfacial agent, in an extensional flow has been studied. The presence of an interfacial agent reduces the size of the dispersed phase, and the deformation of the drop is reduced. An analysis is given, which accurately predicts the deformation for all values of the capillary number considered. The predicted and observed shapes are, however, only in agreement at low values of capillary number. Possible causes for this discrepancy are discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
