Notes: Summary Mature ‘Salustiana’ orange trees under drip irrigation were subjected to deficit irrigation during three years. The water applied (including effective rainfall) in the five irrigation treatments was: (A) 60% of the evaporation of a Class A pan over irrigated grass (Control treatment); B) and C 80% and 60% of control, during the whole year, respectively; (D) 60% of control during the flowering and fruit set period; (E) 60% of control during the fruit maturation period. During the rest of the year, treatments D and E received the same amount of water as the control. There were four replicates in a completely randomized block design. Irrigation frequency was the same for all treatments. Crop evapotranspiration (ET) was estimated by the water balance method using a neutron moisture meter. ET for the control treatment was about 840 mm/year and it was reduced in the deficit treatments. Irrigation treatments affected both yield and fruit quality although the effects varied between years according to the season's rainfall. Fruit number was not affected by the irrigation treatments, therefore differences in yield were due to effect on average fruit weight. Compared to the control treatment, treatments B and C decreased yield significantly (p = 0.05) by 5% and 15%, respectively, and increased the total soluble solids and acids content of the fruit juice. Water deficit in the flowering and fruit set period (treatment D) decreased yield by 4%, acids content of the juice and peel thickness. Treatment E produced fruit of lower quality with thicker peel and more acids than the control. Treatments did not affect juice and pulp content, maturity index of fruits nor maturation time. The effects of the irrigation treatments on the water status of the trees, fruit set and abscission and their implications on irrigation scheduling are also discussed.

Notes: Summary After suboccipital injection of Iotrol and Iopamidol labelled with iodine 125 in rabbits, we measured residual radioactivity in the whole brain and optical density on autoradiographs of brain sections obtained 2, 8 and 24 h after injection. Residual radioactivity is higher with Iotrol than with Iopamidol after 8 h and 24 h. At densitometry, while the penetration of the cortex is the same with both media at 2 h (although subcortical passage of Iotrol is greater), by 8 h the concentration of Iopamidol is twice that of Iotrol, and at 24 h it is three times as high. A similar pattern was seen in the subcortical region. These densitometric findings are in agreement with previous electrophysiological studies, in which changes were less severe and more transient with Iotrol than with Iohexol. There is nevertheless and apparent lack of agreement between the studies of radioactivity and the electrical findings. The lower neurotoxicity of Iotrol may be explained by: 1, a longer half-life in the subarachnoid space; 2. its larger molecules, which inhibit diffusion in the extracellular fluid, and 3. its more hydrophilic nature, which reduces intracellular penetration.

Notes: Summary The aim of the study was to validate a test based on analyses of urine to identify the propafenone metaboliser phenotype during routine chronic therapy. Twenty seven patients chronically treated with propafenone were studied. A debrisoquine test was performed in 10. Propafenone and its metabolites in plasma and urine were measured by HPLC. Propafenone, 5-hydroxypropafenone and N-depropylpropafenone concentrations in plasma were 1.09, 0.182 and 0.101 ng·ml−1, respectively. Total recovery of the administered dose in urine was 30.7%. Two patients were identified as PM, based on the result of the debrisoquine test (log D/4OHD of 1.26 and 1.36). This finding was confirmed by the propafenone metabolic ratio in urine, but the plasma data did not permit clearcut separation of the phenotypes. Propafenone/5-hydroxypropafenone in plasma was not a good predictor of metabolizer phenotype. Although the number of patients who completed all three tests was limited, it is concluded that analysis of propafenone/5-hydroxypropafenone in urine collected between two consecutive doses at steady-state is more practical than the debrisoquine test and more specific than determining the propafenone/5-hydroxypropafenone ratio in plasma, for identification of the propafenone metaboliser phenotypes.

Notes: Abstract Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the third most commonly prescribed group of drugs in Spain. We present here the profile of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) attributed to them and reported to the Spanish System of Pharmacovigilance (SSPV) between 1983 and 1991, together with a preliminary analysis of topical, slow-release (SR) and enteric-coated (EC) preparations. Out of 18 348 reports of ADRs included in the SSPV database, 1609 (8.8%) implicated an NSAID. NSAIDs ranked second after antibiotics (15.1% of all reports) among the most commonly implicated drugs. Half of the patients were more than 55 years old, and 60% were women. Diclofenac (364 reports), piroxicam (282), indomethacin (197), naproxen (155), and ketoprofen (137) were the most commonly implicated NSAIDs in reports of ADRs. The most commonly reported ADRs were gastrointestinal (39%), cutaneous (20%), and those affecting the central and peripheral nervous system (9%). Seven reactions had a fatal outcome, and 138 were considered life threatening. Forty-nine reports included previously undescribed ADRs. There were 98 reports describing ADRs attributed to topical NSAIDs; 5 of these described 11 general reactions, such as duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, diarrhoea, dyspnoea, facial oedema, aggravation of bronchospasm, and angioedema. One hundred and sixty-eight reports referred to SR and EC preparations. The ratio of gastrointestinal to non-gastrointestinal reactions to SR-EC diclofenac was higher in the case of SR-EC diclofenac than in the case of plain diclofenac (P=0.037); similarly, the ratio of CNS to non-CNS reactions to SR-EC indomethacin was also higher than the corresponding ratio with plain indomethacin (P=0.002). Although differential selective reporting of these preparations cannot be excluded, these results raise doubts about the relative safety of SR and EC preparations of NSAIDs in practice.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To assess the clinical efficacy of a topical gel containing 1000 IU · g−1 of heparin, applied three times daily for a maximal period of 7 days to patients with acute superficial phlebitis secondary to indwelling intravenous catheter. Methods: A Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted in one of the internal medicine wards of a tertiary General Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. Inpatients of both genders over 18 years of age that developed superficial phlebitis and gave informed consent were included in the study. The sample size estimation was 132 patients. Sixty-six patients were allocated to each group. There were five protocol deviations and 24 withdrawals in the intervention group, and one protocol deviation and 25 withdrawals in the control group. Consequently, 37 patients in the intervention group and 40 in the control group completed the trial. The main outcome measure was the disappearance of the symptoms and signs of superficial phlebitis. Clinical course, investigator's global impression and adverse events were also recorded. Results: According to the intention-to-treat analysis, after treatment for 7 days superficial phlebitis healed in 27 of the 61 patients (44.3%) who received topical heparin, and in 17 of the 65 patients (26.1%) receiving placebo, giving a relative risk [95% confidence interval (CI)] of 1.69 (1.03–2.78). This indicates that six patients (95% CI, 3–72) have to be treated in order to induce one additional healing. The clinical course and the overall clinical impression were similar in both groups. One patient treated with topical heparin developed mild urticaria. Conclusion: Topical heparin is safe and effective for the treatment of superficial phlebitis secondary to indwelling intravenous catheter.

Notes: Abstract The spatial and temporal distribution of the copepodEurytemora affinis hirundoides (Nordquist, 1888) in the Gironde estuary, southwest France, was investigated in 1976, and between 1981 and 1983. The distribution pattern of the population bore a clear relationship to the patterns of water circulation and transport of particulate matter. Laboratory experiments suggested thatE. affinis hirundoides is incapable of autonomous displacement against the direction of general circulation and behaves as passive particles. A major problem faced by species living in estuaries is that of the maintenance of endemic populations. Some authors have suggested that behavioural responses may play an important role in minimising population losses. Our study indicated that hydrodynamic processes are sufficient to explain the distribution and retention ofE. affinis hirundoides, whose populations are retained in the estuary in the same manner as the suspended sediment. Since the outflow of particulate matter from the Gironde estuary to the sea is very sporadic, we hypothesize that most of the production ofE. affinis hirundoides remains within the estuary, and does not fertilize the continental shelf, at least not in the form of particulate organic matter.

Notes: Abstract The mandibleplates of several specimen of the copepodEurytemora affinis collected from the Westerschelde and the Gironde estuary were studied. Using the ‘Edge index’ (ITOH, 1970) this species could be classified as an omnivore. Pictures obtained by light and scanning electron microscopy reveal that the mandible teeth ofE. affinis have a molar-like structure, which likely changes in functional morphology with developmental stage, sex and age of the adults. Based on these observations, the desirability to consider the three dimensional structure of copepod mandibles for feeding mode classification is discussed.
