    Description: Data from the Nansen Basin of the Arctic Ocean are used to investigate the habitat and conditions under which the polar planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) calcifies. The vertical distribution of δ18O values of net-sampled speciments, together with their abundances and proportion of calcification, are compared with δ18O values from both water samples and foraminiferal tests from core-top sediments. Within the Nansen Basin the average depth of habitat of N. pachyderma (sin.) changes from about 150 m in the southern part to about 80 m in the northern. The average depth of calcification, however, in both regimes varies between 100 and 200 m water depth. δ18O data from net sampled N. pachyderma (sin.) are directly reflected in the core-top sediment data, but compared to equilibrium calcite δ18O values derived from measurements of the ambient water, a consistent offset of about 1‰ over all depth intervals is observed. While in the southern part of the Nansen Basin advection through Fram Strait of planktic foraminifers from further south may play a role, the data from the northern part of the Nansen Basin give clear evidence that the observed offset in δ18O values is caused by a vital effect of N. pachyderma (sin.).

    Description: δ13C values of N. pachyderma (sin.) from the water column and from core top sediments are compared in order to determine the 13C decrease caused by the addition of anthropogenic CO2 to the atmosphere. This effect, which is referred to as the surface ocean Suess effect, is estimated to be about −0.9‰(±0.2‰) within the Arctic Ocean halocline waters and to about −0.6‰(±0.1‰) in the Atlantic-derived waters of the southern Nansen Basin. This means that the area where the Arctic Ocean halocline waters are formed, the Arctic shelf regions, are relatively well ventilated with respect to CO2. Nevertheless, δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) in the Arctic Ocean halocline waters is far from isotopic equilibrium. Absolute values of δ13C of N. pachyderma (sin.) covary with the surface ocean Suess effect, and we interprete changes in both parameters as a reflection of the degree of ventilation of the waters on the shelf sea. Measurements of δ13C of N. pachyderma (sin.) in the Arctic Ocean from plankton tows reveal a “vital effect” of about −2‰, significantly different from other published values. A first-order estimate of the total anthropogenic carbon inventory shows, that despite of its permanent sea-ice cover, the Arctic Ocean, with 2% of the global ocean area, is responsible for about 4–6% of the global ocean's CO2 uptake.

    Description: The reactive stroma surrounding tumor lesions performs critical roles ranging from supporting tumor cell proliferation to inducing tumorigenesis and metastasis. Therefore, it is critical to understand the cellular components and signaling control mechanisms that underlie the etiology of reactive stroma. Previous studies have individually implicated fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) and canonical WNT/β-catenin signaling in prostate cancer progression and the initiation and maintenance of a reactive stroma; however, both pathways are frequently found to be coactivated in cancer tissue. Using autochthonous transgenic mouse models for inducible FGFR1 (JOCK1) and prostate-specific and ubiquitously expressed inducible β-catenin (Pro-Cat and Ubi-Cat, respectively) and bigenic crosses between these lines (Pro-Cat × JOCK1 and Ubi-Cat × JOCK1), we describe WNT-induced synergistic acceleration of FGFR1-driven adenocarcinoma, associated with a pronounced fibroblastic reactive stroma activation surrounding prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (mPIN) lesions found both in in situ and reconstitution assays. Both mouse and human reactive stroma exhibited increased transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling adjacent to pathologic lesions likely contributing to invasion. Furthermore, elevated stromal TGF-β signaling was associated with higher Gleason scores in archived human biopsies, mirroring murine patterns. Our findings establish the importance of the FGFR1–WNT–TGF-β signaling axes as driving forces behind reactive stroma in aggressive prostate adenocarcinomas, deepening their relevance as therapeutic targets.     Description: This paper describes a new data set from the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument, from which gravity waves (GWs) at an altitude of 50-55 km can be inferred. CIPS is sensitive to GWs with horizontal wavelengths from ~15-600 km and vertical wavelengths longer than 15 km. Several examples of GWs in CIPS observations are shown, including waves associated with the Andes mountains, island topography, convection, the polar night jet, and the tropospheric jet stream. GW signatures in the CIPS data are shown to agree well with near-coincident but lower-altitude measurements from the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) in June of 2016. Results suggest the power of combining CIPS measurements with those from other instruments to investigate GW filtering and propagation. The CIPS data set opens new areas of inquiry, enabling comprehensive investigations of GWs in the middle atmosphere on a near-global scale.

    Description: The mobility of goethite (OMCG) colloids coated with organic matter was studied in goethite-coated quartz sand and in undisturbed subsoil rich in natural coatings of iron oxide. Classic Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) interactions and DLVO extended by Lewis acid–base parameters (XDLVO) were estimated between colloids and goethite-coated sand from zeta potentials and sessile drop contact angles. The OMCG colloids were retained completely in goethite-coated sand, whereas preconditioning of the solid matrix with dissolved organic matter (DOM) enabled subsequent colloid transport. Zeta potential values showed that goethite-coated sand was modified strongly by DOM preconditioning. The DLVO and XDLVO interactions were estimated for the pairs of OMCG colloids and for (i) quartz, (ii) goethite and (iii) organic matter-coated goethite. Both DLVO approaches were able to predict general trends of colloid breakthrough. An exception was the XDLVO interaction for combination (iii), which showed short-distance (〈1.3 nm) repulsive interactions that were inconsistent with breakthrough behaviour. Analogous to OMCG colloid transport in the sand, DOM preconditioning was also the prerequisite for OMCG colloid transport in undisturbed subsoil. Total colloid breakthrough in the soil was less than in the sand, probably because of straining in pore throats and retention at air–water interfaces. We concluded that the DLVO and XDLVO approaches were in general capable of predicting trends of OMCG colloid mobility in goethite-coated sand. We concluded further that the basic principles of OMCG colloid transport were transferrable from the simplified model system to the more complex natural system despite considerable differences in surface properties, pore structure and water content. Highlights How will organic matter (OM) coatings on the solid matrix affect mobility of iron oxide colloids? Effect of OM on mobility was assessed in simple model soil systems and in undisturbed soil. OM coatings modify properties of the solid matrix surface and are a prerequisite for colloid transport. Balances between OM transport, coating formation and decomposition control colloid mobility.
