    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über den Fall eines asymmetrischen Ischiopagenpaares (Thoraco-omphalo-ischiopagus tripus) berichtet. Auf Grund einer Analatresie und rupturierten Omphalocele mit Dünndarmläsion wurde noch am Tage der Geburt ein Anus praeter angelegt. Wegen rezidivierenden Adhäsionsileus mußten die Kinder vor der Trennungsoperation noch weitere dreimal relaparatomiert werden. Nach eingehenden Voruntersuchungen konnte die Trennungsoperation im Alter von $$2{\raise0.5ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 1$}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.15em\lower0.25ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 2$}}$$ Jahren durchgeführt werden. Diese Operation überstanden beide Kinder gut, es war jedoch bei jedem Kind ein weiterer Eingriff zur Revision von Dünndarmfïsteln nach weiteren 7 bzw. 9 Monaten erforderlich. Zwilling R. verstarb im Alter von 3 Jahren und 8 Monaten an den Folgen einer Candida-Sepsis, Zwilling P. konnte nach Hause entlassen werden und lebt jetzt bei seinen Eltern.
    Notes: Summary A case of asymmetrical thoraco-omphalo-ischiopagus tripus will be reported. Anal atresia, ruptured omphalocele with lesion of the small intestine made an artificial anus necessary. Recurrent adhesion ileus made three further operations necessary. After precise preliminary examinations we separated these twins at the age of $$2{\raise0.5ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 1$}\kern-0.1em/\kern-0.15em\lower0.25ex\hbox{$\scriptstyle 2$}}$$ years. After 7 and 9 months both children had to be reoperated because of fistula of the small intestine. Twin R. died at the age of 3 years and 8 months in consequence of a candida sepsis. Twin P. now lives with his parents.

    Description: Although single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in folate-mediated pathways predict susceptibility to choline deficiency during severe choline deprivation, it is unknown if effects persist at recommended intakes. Thus, we used stable isotope liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methodology to examine the impact of candidate SNPs on choline metabolism in a long-term, randomized, controlled feeding trial among pregnant, lactating, and nonpregnant (NP) women consuming 480 or 930 mg/d choline (22% as choline-d 9 , with d 9 indicating a deuterated trimethyl amine group) and meeting folate-intake recommendations. Variants impairing folate metabolism, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase ( MTHFR ) rs1801133, methionine synthase ( MTR ) rs1805087 [wild-type (WT)], MTR reductase ( MTRR ) rs1801394, and methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase-methenyltetrahydrofolate cyclohydrolase-formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase ( MTHFD1 ) rs2236225, influenced choline dynamics, frequently through interactions with reproductive state and choline intake, with fewer genotypic alterations observed among pregnant women. Women with these variants partitioned more dietary choline toward phosphatidylcholine (PC) biosynthesis via the cytidine diphosphate (CDP)-choline pathway at the expense of betaine synthesis even when use of betaine as a methyl donor was increased. Choline intakes of 930 mg/d restored partitioning of dietary choline between betaine and CDP-PC among NP ( MTHFR rs1801133 and MTR rs1805087 WT) and lactating ( MTHFD1 rs2236225) women with risk genotypes. Overall, our findings indicate that loss-of-function variants in folate-metabolizing enzymes strain cellular PC production, possibly via impaired folate-dependent phosphatidylethanolamine- N -methyltransferase (PEMT)-PC synthesis, and suggest that women with these risk genotypes may benefit from choline intakes exceeding current recommendations.—Ganz, A.     Description: On November 5–8, 2019, the “Mars Extant Life: What's Next?” conference was convened in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The conference gathered a community of actively publishing experts in disciplines related to habitability and astrobiology. Primary conclusions are as follows: A significant subset of conference attendees concluded that there is a realistic possibility that Mars hosts indigenous microbial life. A powerful theme that permeated the conference is that the key to the search for martian extant life lies in identifying and exploring refugia (“oases”), where conditions are either permanently or episodically significantly more hospitable than average. Based on our existing knowledge of Mars, conference participants highlighted four potential martian refugium (not listed in priority order): Caves, Deep Subsurface, Ices, and Salts. The conference group did not attempt to reach a consensus prioritization of these candidate environments, but instead felt that a defensible prioritization would require a future competitive process. Within the context of these candidate environments, we identified a variety of geological search strategies that could narrow the search space. Additionally, we summarized a number of measurement techniques that could be used to detect evidence of extant life (if present). Again, it was not within the scope of the conference to prioritize these measurement techniques—that is best left for the competitive process. We specifically note that the number and sensitivity of detection methods that could be implemented if samples were returned to Earth greatly exceed the methodologies that could be used at Mars. Finally, important lessons to guide extant life search processes can be derived both from experiments carried out in terrestrial laboratories and analog field sites and from theoretical modeling.
