Notes: Raman scattering was used to obtain information about residual strains on As and Sb segregates immersed in GaAs and GaSb annealed at high temperatures. Eg and A1g modes of As and Sb in annealed GaAs and GaSb Raman spectra showed that the segregates are in the crystalline phase. Tensile stresses on As segregates were evident, while the Sb segregates were found to be practically relaxed. The temperature dependence of the stresses on segregates were determined. The different annealing temperatures used in this work were found to not cause substantial changes in stresses on segregates. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An experimental facility for carrying out x-ray multiple diffraction (XRMD) studies in parallel-beam geometry using the Daresbury synchrotron radiation source and its application in the study of coherency of an epilayered sample are described. Experimental high-resolution Renninger scans (RS) about GaAs(006) are presented and the pseudoforbidden "Aufhellung'' eight-beam (000,006,020,042,044,026,02¯4,02¯2) case has been fully resolved for the first time using the setup which involves a double-crystal six-circle scattering geometry and data acquisition providing optimal conditions for these scans to be obtained. A sample of InGaAs/AlGaInAs/InP(001) epilayered material was also examined and high-resolution RS from the bulk, substrate, and epitaxial overlayers were obtained. The diffraction wavelength used was determined directly from the bulk RS as λ=(1.4695±0.0005) A(ring). The data clearly reveal a number of interesting XRMD features which allow for the sample characterization. The layer parallel lattice parameter can be determined either from the epilayer tetragonal distortion in the layer RS or from the MORSI (modulation of the RS intensity due to the presence of the epilayers) [Greenberg & Ladell, Appl. Phys. Lett. 50, 436 (1987)] dips in the substrate RS. These dips can also provide simultaneous information on relative tilt and rotation between both layer/substrate lattices. The fitting of the position and profile of the three-beam surface peaks allows the determination of the layer parallel lattice parameter and the layer mosaic spread on the sample surface plane. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The results of oxygen absorption in temperatures ranging from 200 to 500 °C are reported for the phases Fe17R2, R=Pr and Sm. It was observed that the oxygen saturation limit is temperature dependent, being of 3 at/fu at 200 °C, 12.8 at/fu at 300 °C, 20.3 at/fu at 400 °C, and 28.5 at/fu at 500 °C. This implies that above 200 °C the phase is deeply altered by oxygen absorption. Samples with absorption at 200 °C were studied as prepared and heat treated at 500 °C/40 h. The results show that the heat-treated samples consist of Fe17R2, Fe, and R2O3. Metallographic examination, susceptibility, and Mössbauer spectroscopy data support the hypothesis that the as-prepared samples consist of a mixture of Fe17R2 and ordered interstitial Fe17R2Ox. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raman scattering has been used to get information on the depth profile of both lattice damage and solid arsenic formation in gallium arsenide annealed at different temperatures. Measurements of Raman peak intensity ratio of GaAs transverse to longitudinal optical phonons as a function of exciting wavelength with a different penetration depth of the light gave information on the depth profile of the chemical and structural disorder in the gallium arsenide lattice. Moreover, measurements of the arsenic A1g and Eg phonon mode frequencies as a function of temperature showed that the arsenic formed in the vicinity of the surface is crystalline and submitted to very high temperature-dependent tensile stresses, with values ranging from 1.5 GPa at 300 K until 2.8 GPa at 10 K. On the other hand, the analysis of selection rules, phonon frequency, and linewidth indicates a strain-free and misoriented GaAs matrix. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method to measure the resistance of fragile single crystals under high uniaxial stress is reported. To compensate for its natural brittleness, the crystal is embedded in epoxy, whose shape is optimized to sustain the stress. This method was used to study the magnetoresistance of (BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 at low temperatures and high magnetic fields and the superconducting transition temperature of (BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 under uniaxial stress perpendicular to the planes of BEDT-TTF molecules. The results obtained indicate a high degree of homogeneity of the stress in the crystal and comparison with previous hydrostatic pressure measurements reveal the true uniaxial nature of the stress applied. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raman scattering was used to study the temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies of Eg and A1g modes of crystalline arsenic and antimony. The partial derivative of the frequency versus temperature for both materials was determined from a linear fitting approximation. The real anharmonic contribution to the shift was obtained after correction had been made for the contribution of thermal expansion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Theoretical models of species coexistence between desert mammals have generally been based on a combination of food and microhabitat selection by granivorous rodents. Although these models are applicable in various deserts of the world, they cannot explain resource use by mammals in Neotropical deserts. The present study examines diet composition in a mammal assemblage in the Monte desert, Argentina. The results show that two main strategies are used by these mammals: medium-sized species (hystricognath rodents: Dolichotis patagonum, Lagostomus maximus, Microcavia australis and Galea musteloides; and an exotic lagomorph: Lepus europaeus) are herbivores, whereas small-sized species (a marsupial: Thylamys pusillus; and sigmodontine rodents: Graomys griseoflavus, Akodon molinae, Calomys musculinus, Eligmodontia typus) are omnivorous. Small mammals also show a tendency towards granivory (C. musculinus), insectivory (A. molinae and T. pusillus) and folivory (G. griseoflavus).

Notes: The polyhedron which confines the Poynting vectors of N-beam transmissions in crystal space is referred to as the Borrmann pyramid. The observation of this Borrmann pyramid is realized from the diffraction images of the four-beam, (000)(220)(2\bar 20)(400), transmission case of silicon single crystals for Mo Kα. The directions of the Poynting vectors for the eight modes of wave propagation involved and the diffraction images are calculated. These calculations confirm the experimental observations. The variation of the direction of the Poynting vector for each mode is also reported.
