Notes: Summary A programme of home-based intervention with two groups of pre-school severely subnormal children and their parents has produced apparently contradictory results; frequently visited children after initial superiority over infrequently visited children, later showed a deceleration in intellectual growth. Less frequently visited children conversely showed a rise in performance after an initial decrement. The interpretation is advanced that parents in the latter group were less dependent on the visiting therapist, and more able to take positive action to assist their children, and improve their own situation.

Notes: Summary A 3-year intervention programme with parents of severely subnormal pre-school children is described. Two experimental groups, one visited individually at 2-week intervals and one similarly at 8-week intervals are compared with a third distal contrast group receiving no intervention. Analyses of successive IQ changes in all three groups showed that the less frequently visited group made greater progress after 2 years than that receiving more visits but that this difference disappeared after 3 years. The contrast non-intervention group made fewer gains overall than either of the two experimental groups. Four questions are discussed: the maintenance of early gains, the influence of social class, the optimal level of intervention and the meaning of successful intervention to parents. Evaluation of the project is concerned with experimental efficiency, methodology, and the problems of partnership.

Notes: Koluchova's on-going study of twin boys who suffered extreme deprivation between 18 months and 7 yr, and who thereafter received remedial treatment, is discussed in the context of relevant literature. Malnutrition, cruelly, neglect and considerable isolation over 51/2 yr did not predestine them permanently to the condition of severe subnormality which they manifested on discovery. Their greatly accelerated development confirms similar work and sheds some light on the interaction of constitutional and environmental factors in the formation of human characteristics. Results underline the inadequacy of theories stressing the over-riding importance of early experiences for later growth.

Notes: [Auszug] INTELLIGENCE TESTING has been with us for some seventy years, and the results used?and sometimes misused?for important social and educational purposes during much of this period. From the start, at least two irreconcilable lines of thought about intelligence test scores can be traced. The first was ...
