Notes: Gastrointestinal involvement has been reported in 12–21% of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders but is unusual in the setting of heart transplantation. We report four post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders observed among the 174 heart transplant recipients of our series, all of which were primary malignant lymphomas of and confined to the digestive tract. The mean onset time from transplantation was 22 months. Small intestine lesions were present in all four patients, with gastric involvement in one. Histologically, the tumour was monomorphic of immunoblastic type in one case and polymorphic in the three other cases. Analysis of cytoplasmic immunoglobulins demonstrated the presence of a major monoclonal subset in all patients. Epstein-Barr virus genome was found in numerous tumour cells by in situ hybridization. The exclusive localization to the digestive tract and the lymphoepithelial lesions observed in two cases suggest that these lymphoproliferations might originate from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les contraintes anatomiques imposées au cœur artificiel total (CAT) nécessitent des études anatomiques spécifiques.
Notes: Summary The anatomic constraints imposed on a total artificial heart (TAH) require specific anatomic studies. A thoracic anatomic study was performed with a scanning device equipped with three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction software on 15 male patients, between the ages of 41 to 63 years (52 ± 6 years). All were candidates for heart transplantation. The 3-D reconstructions of the cardiovascular structures obtained from surgical anatomy data specific to TAH implantation allowed a volumetric measurement of these structures. A modeling diagram of these structures permitted reproducible quantitative measurements of the 35 geometrical parameters which characterized shape, orientation, and position of these structures within the thorax. Most of the measured parameters were characterized by low variability (coefficient of variation from 10 to 25%).

Notes: Summary Anatomical characteristics of the radial a. were compared to those of the internal thoracic a., considered as a gold standard in coronary surgery. The length, the diameter, the collateral distribution and the wall thickness of these two arteries were studied comparatively. In addition, a comparative histological analysis was carried out. Anatomical and histological characteristics of these two arteries have important implications for coronary artery bypass.

Notes: Summary 69 rats underwent temporary or permanent ligation of the left coronary artery and were studied by the injection of colloidal carbon following fixation-perfusion. 10 rats were studied using the same protocol and served as controls. Localized myocardial ischemia was accompanied by microvascular changes which produced capillary obstruction when blood flow was reestablished. This phenomenon of “no-reflow” was characterized by the presence of large non perfused areas seen after brief periods of ischemia (15 min). These areas were increased when the period of ischemia was lengthened. After 30 to 60 min of interruption of blood flow the non perfused area extended over the major portion of the ischemic area. During reperfusion the “no-reflow” phenomenon displayed during the first hour showing a transitory improvement in capillary perfusion which was soon followed by a progressive reexpansion of the non injected zones. After 24 hours of reperfusion, the latter zones were identical in their extent to those cases showing tissue necrosis following permanent ischemia. This “no-reflow” phenomenon appears to play a role in the evolution of the reperfused ischémic area by excluding certain areas from the benefits of reperfusion. The most probable factors involved in this process are: increased blood viscosity, endothelial changes peri-capillary edema and the contractile state of the myocardium. The incidence of these microvascular changes, using various methods of myocardial preservation during open heart surgery operations, as well as the present attempts directed towards metabolic therapy of myocardial anoxia, are under investigation.

Notes: Abstract Authorized use of 2,4-D by cottage owners in Buckhorn Lake for the years 1977 to 1980 ranged from 124 to 280 kg of active ingredient, annually. This would give predicted average water concentrations of 2 to 4 μg L−1 during the June–July period. However, higher residues were observed in the Lake. Between 1977 and 1980, 353 individual fish, of eight species, were caught for analysis in Buckhorn and Chemong lakes. These fish belonged to eight edible species. Twelve percent of the fish caught during the pre-treatment period (i.e. May), had detectable residues of 2,4-D. Mean residues by species and year ranged from 〈5 to 30 μg kg−1 2,4-D. In the early post-treatment period (i.e. July), 69% of fish caught had mean residues by species which ranged from 〈5 to 136 μg kg−1 2,4-D. In the late post-treatment period (i.e. October), 19% of fish caught by year had detectable residues of 2,4-D. Mean residues by species during this period ranged from 〈5 to 60 μg kg−1 2,4-D. While 15 (i.e. 4%) of the 353 fish and fish composites had 2,4-D above the maximum residue limit of 100 μg kg−1 only six were of edible size.

Notes: n = 7), mismatch oligonucleotide (n= 7), and scramble oligonucleotide (n= 7). On the left side hydrogel was used with saline so that each animal served as its own control. Animals were killed 6 weeks after angioplasty and arteries were studied. The thickness and mean surface of the neointima (MTI and MSI) and the ratio (R) of the neointima to neointima + media were calculated. In the scramble and mismatch groups there was no difference between the treated and control arteries with regard to MTI, MSI, or R. In the antisense group mean all three values were significantly lower on the treated side than the control side (EMI: p 〈 0.02, SMI: p 〈 0.02, and R: p 〈 0.01). Treated arteries in the antisense group presented significantly lower EMI (p 〈 0.02), SMI (p 〈 0.02), and R (p 〈 0.01) than treated arteries in the other groups whereas the thickness and mean surface of the media were comparable. Endoluminal administration of an antisense oligonucleotide against the α subunit of farneysyl transferase inhibited intimal hyperplasia in our model.
