    Notes: Objective To assess the feasibility and acceptability of including sexual activity questionnaires in gynaecological clinical trials.Design A longitudinal quality of life study during the Maintenance Interferon Trial and the EVALUATE Hysterectomy Trial.Setting Gynaecology clinics and women's homes.Sample Ninety-six women with advanced ovarian cancer participating in the Maintenance Interferon Trial and 542 women undergoing a hysterectomy in the EVALUATE Hysterectomy Trial.Methods Quality of life questionnaires, including the sexual activity questionnaire, were completed by women prior to randomisation and periodically after randomisation.Main outcome measures Compliance rates of the sexual activity questionnaire, both overall and with respect to the level of sexual functioning and age of the women. Attitudes of the women towards completing the questionnaire, and suitability of using the sexual activity questionnaire in clinical trials.Results Compliance rates of over 80% were achieved in both trials, both overall and for each questionnaire completed. The age of the woman did not appear to influence the completion of the questionnaire, nor did her level of sexual functioning. Women were supportive of the research and did not find the questionnaire intrusive.Conclusions It is feasible to include sexual activity questionnaires in gynaecological clinical trials requiring repeated assessment of quality of life over a long period of time. The sexual activity questionnaire is an appropriate tool to carry out investigations of sexual functioning and is worth considering for use in future clinical trials.

    Notes: Abstract This irregular hyperoval, found by computer search in 1958, has many interesting and unusual properties. We provide a synthetic construction of this hyperoval, use the construction to determine the full group of automorphisms of the hyperoval, provide computer-free proofs of its known properties and introduce some new results concerning the intersection of this hyperoval and conics in the given plane.

    Notes: Abstract Let G be a collineation group of a finite projective plane. The action of G on the centers and axes of non-identity elations and homologies is discussed. There are several results on the possible numbers of orbits of centers, axes, and center-axis pairs of homologies and elations of a particular order. Several results on the generation of homologies or elations by other homologies or elations reveal additional information on the structures formed by the centers and axes. Some sets of sufficient conditions for the centers and axes to form Desarguesian subplanes are given.

    Notes: Abstract In some projective spaces the complement of a simplex can be partitioned into disjoint copies of a higher or lower dimensional projective space of a different order. More precisely, let d and e be positive integers with e ≥ 2. We exhibit an embedding of PG(d,q) in PG(e,qd+1) and show that the complement of a simplex in PG(e,qd+1) may be partitioned into disjoint copies of embedded PG(d,q)'s, Each embedded PG(d,q) spans PG(e,qd+1) whenever d ≥ e. These results are also true for PG(d,F) and PG(e,K) for infinite fields $$F \subseteq K$$ for which degF K=d+1 and the field extension is normal, separable, and cyclic.

    Description: Recent discoveries suggest that the candidate superphyla Patescibacteria and DPANN constitute a large fraction of the phylogenetic diversity of Bacteria and Archaea. Their small genomes and limited coding potential have been hypothesized to be ancestral adaptations to obligate symbiotic lifestyles. To test this hypothesis, we performed cell–cell association, genomic, and phylogenetic analyses on 4,829 individual cells of Bacteria and Archaea from 46 globally distributed surface and subsurface field samples. This confirmed the ubiquity and abundance of Patescibacteria and DPANN in subsurface environments, the small size of their genomes and cells, and the divergence of their gene content from other Bacteria and Archaea. Our analyses suggest that most Patescibacteria and DPANN in the studied subsurface environments do not form specific physical associations with other microorganisms. These data also suggest that their unusual genomic features and prevalent auxotrophies may be a result of ancestral, minimal cellular energy transduction mechanisms that lack respiration, thus relying solely on fermentation for energy conservation.

    Description: Strain HIMB11 is a planktonic marine bacterium isolated from coastal seawater in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii belonging to the ubiquitous and versatile Roseobacter clade of the alphaproteobacterial family Rhodobacteraceae. Here we describe the preliminary characteristics of strain HIMB11, including annotation of the draft genome sequence and comparative genomic analysis with other members of the Roseobacter lineage. The 3,098,747 bp draft genome is arranged in 34 contigs and contains 3,183 protein-coding genes and 54 RNA genes. Phylogenomic and 16S rRNA gene analyses indicate that HIMB11 represents a unique sublineage within the Roseobacter clade. Comparison with other publicly available genome sequences from members of the Roseobacter lineage reveals that strain HIMB11 has the genomic potential to utilize a wide variety of energy sources (e.g. organic matter, reduced inorganic sulfur, light, carbon monoxide), while possessing a reduced number of substrate transporters.
