Notes: Abstract: Previous studies have shown that the levels of the microtubule-associated protein τ in the CSF of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) are elevated compared with age-matched controls. In spite of these findings, the nature of τ in CSF has not been well documented. In the present study, τ was immunoprecipitated from CSF of patients with AD or acute stroke, as well as normal elderly controls, followed by immunoblot analysis. In all cases, CSF τ consisted primarily of a band migrating at 26–28 kDa. In AD and stroke patients, several smaller τ fragments were also detected. No intact τ was detected in any of the CSF samples examined. Further immunoprecipitation studies showed that the majority of the τ fragments contained the amino terminus of the molecule. Treatment of CSF τ with alkaline phosphatase did not alter the electrophoretic properties of the fragments. These studies clearly demonstrate that CSF τ is truncated rather than intact.

Notes: Exposure to an enriched environment and physical activity, such as voluntary running, increases neurogenesis of granule cells in the dentate gyrus of adult mice. These stimuli are also known to improve performance in hippocampus-dependent learning tasks, but it is unclear whether their effects on neurogenesis are exclusive to the hippocampal formation. In this study, we housed adult mice under three conditions (enriched environment, voluntary wheel running and standard housing), and analysed proliferation in the lateral ventricle wall and granule cell neurogenesis in the olfactory bulb in comparison to the dentate gyrus. Using bromodeoxyuridine to label dividing cells, we could not detect any difference in the number of newly generated cells in the ventricle wall. When giving the new cells time to migrate and differentiate in the olfactory bulb, we observed no changes in the number of adult-generated olfactory granule cells; however, voluntary running and enrichment produced a doubling in the amount of new hippocampal granule cells. The discrepancy between the olfactory bulb and the dentate gyrus suggests that these living conditions trigger locally through an as yet unidentified mechanism specific to neurogenic signals in the dentate gyrus.

Notes: [Auszug] Calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) and adrenomedullin are related peptides with distinct pharmacological profiles. Here we show that a receptor with seven transmembrane domains, the calcitonin-receptor-like receptor (CRLR), can function as either a CGRP receptor or an adrenomedullin receptor, ...

Notes: Abstract Suppose that each edge of a connected graph G of order n is independently operational with probability p; the reliability of G is the probability that the operational edges form a spanning connected subgraph. A useful expansion of the reliability is as $$p^{n - 1} \sum _{i = 0}^d H_i (1 - p)^i $$ , and the Ball-Provan method for bounding reliability relies on Stanley's combinatorial bounds for the H-vectors of shellable complexes. We prove some new bounds here for the H-vectors arising from graphs, and the results here shed light on the problem of characterizing the H-vectors of matroids.

Notes: Abstract Two partial ordersP andQ on a setX arecomplementary (written asP⊥Q) if they share no ordered pairs (except for loops) but the transitive closure of the union is all possible ordered pairs. For each positive integern we form a graph Pos n consisting of all nonempty partial orders on {1, …,n} with edges denoting complementation. We investigate here properties of the graphs Pos n . In particular, we show: •The diameter of Pos n is 5 for alln〉2 (and hence Pos n is connected for alln); •With probability 1, the distance between two members of Pos n is 2; •The graphs Pos n are universal (i.e. every graph occurs as an induced subgraph of some Pos n ); •The maximal size α(n) of an independent set of Pos n satisfies the asymptotic formula $$\frac{1}{4} + o(1) \leqslant \frac{{\alpha (n)}}{{p(n)}} \leqslant \frac{1}{2} + o(1),$$ wherep(n) is the order of Pos n . The results shed light on the structure of the complementation relation on all topologies on a fixed finite set.

Notes: Abstract A topology on a set X is self complementary if there is a homeomorphic copy on the same set that is a complement in the lattice of topologies on X. The problem of characterizing finite self complementary topologies leads us to redefine the problem in terms of preorders (i.e. reflexive, transitive relations). A preorder P on a set X is self complementary if there is an isomorphic copy P′ of P on X that is arc disjoint to P (except for loops) and with the property that P∪P′ is strongly connected. We characterize here self complementary finite partial orders and self complementary finite equivalence relations.
