    Notes: Olfactory sensitivity of juvenile (0 year) Atlantic cod Gadus morhua to 20 L-amino acids was studied by recording electroencephalograms (EEG) from the olfactory bulb. Leucine, methionine, asparagine, glutamine, alanine and threonine were highly stimulatory; proline, phenylalanine, aspartic acid and tryptophan were the least stimulatory. Threshold concentrations determined for four amino acids were 10−8 M for alanine, 10−7 M for arginine and leucine and 10−6 M for glutamic acid.

    Notes: The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is an ectoparasitic copepod that infests both wild and farmed salmonid fish. Salmon lice are a major disease problem in the farming of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and the possibility of salmon lice playing a role in the decline of wild anadromous stocks has also been raised. Lepeophtheirus salmonis can detect a range of stimuli (pressure/moving water, chemicals and light) in the external environment. However, the response thresholds to various stimuli, and the spatial and temporal scales over which they operate in the context of host location, are largely unknown. In this context, we attempted to determine whether salmon lice copepodids settle onto hosts more effectively, or at different locations on the fish's body, under different qualities of light. Lice settlement trials were conducted under three lighting conditions; L1: unpolarized under ultraviolet A (UVA)-through visible; L2: unpolarized without UVA (control); L3: 100% linearly polarized without UVA. A dark control was also conducted. No statistically significant difference in lice settlement was found. While changes in light intensity are involved in host detection at spatial scales on the order of metres, the results presented here suggest that it is not the primary sensory modality underlying host location at smaller spatial scales (cm to mm).

    Notes: Abstract The copepod Calanus finmarchicus Gunnerus is a key component of the planktonic food web in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. In this region, productivity-determining biophysical interactions occur in the upper 0 to 30 m of the water column. The eggs and nauplii of C. finmarchicus are found in this layer. Measurements of the diffuse attenuation coefficients for solar ultraviolet-B radiation (280 to 320 nm, UV-B) at various locations in this region indicated maximum 10% depths (the depth to which 10% of the surface energy penetrates) of 3 to 4 m at a wavelength of 310 nm. This represents a significant percentage of the summer mixed-layer water column: organisms residing in this layer are exposed to UV-B radiation. Laboratory experiments using a Xenon-arc-lamp based solar simulator revealed that C. finmarchicus embryos exposed to UV-B exhibited high wavelength-dependent mortality. The strongest effects occurred under exposures to wavelengths below 312 nm. A significant percentage of nauplii hatched from eggs exposed to these wavelengths exhibited malformations indicative of errors in pattern formation during embryogenesis. At the shorter wavelengths (〈305 nm), UV-B-induced mortality was strongly dependent on cumulative exposure. The biological weighting function (BWF) derived for UV-B-induced mortality in C. finmarchicus eggs is similar to that reported for naked DNA. This suggests that the UV-B-induced mortality effect on C. finmarchicus embryos is a direct result of DNA damage. There was no evidence of a detrimental effect of ultraviolet-A radiation (320 to 400 nm). Calculations based upon the BWF indicate that, under current noon surface irradiance, 50% of C. finmarchicus eggs located at or very near (within 10 cm) the ocean surface will be dead after 2.5 h of exposure. Under solar spectral irradiance simulating a 20% decrease in ozone layer thickness, this time drops to 2.2 h. These are first-order estimates based upon irradiance taken at a time of day during which the values would be maximal. Nonetheless, they illustrate the relative changes in UV-B effects that will result from ozone layer depletions expected over the coming decades. It is also important to point out that variability in cloud cover, water quality, and vertical distribution and displacement within the mixed layer, can all have a greater effect on the flux of UV-B radiation to which C. finmarchicus eggs are exposed than will ozone layer depletion at these latitudes.

    Description: Kinematics of swimming behavior of larval Atlantic cod, aged 12 and 27 days post-hatch (dph) and cultured under three pCO2 conditions (control-370, medium-1800, and high-4200 μatm) from March to May 2010, were extracted from swim path recordings obtained using silhouette video photography. The swim paths were analyzed for swim duration, distance and speed, stop duration, and horizontal and vertical turn angles to determine whether elevated seawater pCO2—at beyond near-future ocean acidification levels—affects the swimming kinematics of Atlantic cod larvae. There were no significant differences in most of the variables tested: the swimming kinematics of Atlantic cod larvae at 12 and 27 dph were highly resilient to extremely elevated pCO2 levels. Nonetheless, cod larvae cultured at the highest pCO2 concentration displayed vertical turn angles that were more restricted (median turn angle, 15°) than larvae in the control (19°) and medium (19°) treatments at 12 dph (but not at 27 dph). Significant reduction in the stop duration of cod larvae from the high treatment (median stop duration, 0.28 s) was also observed compared to the larvae from the control group (0.32 s) at 27 dph (but not at 12 dph). The functional and ecological significance of these subtle differences are unclear and, therefore, require further investigation in order to determine whether they are ecologically relevant or spurious.

    Description: Wrasse (Labridae) are used widely as cleaner fish to control sea lice infestation in commercial farming of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) in Norway. As a result, there is an intense fishery for wrasse along the Norwegian coast. Little is known of the population ecology of wrasse and, therefore, an evaluation of their distribution, demographics, and habitat preferences was required as a baseline from which to assess the impact of the fishery. We analysed experimental catch data from a 3-year survey carried out in 1997–1999 (before the fishery began) during and after the wrasse spawning season in a Norwegian fjord. Corkwing wrasse ( Symphodus melops ) was always the most abundant species, ranging from 52 to 68% of the catches. Goldsinny ( Ctenolabrus rupestris ) and rock cook ( Centrolabrus exoletus ) were the second most abundant species (up to 30%). Ballan ( Labrus bergylta ) and cuckoo ( Labrus mixtus ) wrasse represented 〈2% of the catches. Rock cook was relatively more abundant at more exposed stations, while corkwing wrasse was characteristic of more sheltered stations. Goldsinny and ballan wrasse both occupied mainly intermediate stations in the more protected areas. Smaller fish were found at the most protected areas, while larger fish were found at the more exposed stations. Sex ratio in goldsinny and rock cook varied significantly from year to year. In corkwing, the sex ratio remained the same each year, and females were always in larger proportion (61–66%). Spawning occurred mainly in June for goldsinny, rock cook, and corkwing wrasse. The fact that species composition and/or size distributions vary considerably over very small distances must be considered in monitoring programmes. Erroneous conclusions about shifts in species composition can easily be made simply because sampling gear are set in slightly different areas.
