Notes: A new near infrared emission spectrum of 4HeD has been recorded at 4.2 K during proton irradiation of a mixed sample of helium gas and solid deuterium. The upper state of the transitions is an admixture of the accidentally degenerate D 2Σ+(v=0) and C 2Σ+(v=3) levels. The lower state is the previously unobserved A 2Σ+(v=2) level. The observation of this level allows for evaluation of the rotational constants B‘2 and D‘2 for the A 2Σ+ state, and for a better estimate of the vibrational parameters ω‘e and ω‘eχ‘e.

Notes: Absorption spectra of dense helium gas at cryogenic temperatures has been acquired while the sample was irradiated using a 6.5 MeV proton beam. By chopping the proton beam, rather than the source lamp, we were able to achieve one part in 104 spectral sensitivity. The spectra showed six new bands in 4He2 and three in 3He2. These have been identified as transitions between high-lying vibrational levels, with the strongest originating on the highest bound level of the a 3Σ+u potential. The temperature and pressure dependence of these features, as compared to low-lying molecular and atomic features, offers some insight into the reaction dynamics of this fundamental system.

Notes: Emission spectra of three isotopomers of helium hydride (4HeH, 3HeH, and 3HeD) in the visible spectral region have been acquired using proton-beam irradiation of dense helium gas (150 Torr) at 4.2 K in the presence of some solid hydrogen or deuterium. Besides the previously reported D 2Σ+→A 2Σ+ transition, near 550 nm, a second transition near 640 nm, identified as the D 2Σ+→B 2Π, has been acquired and analyzed. The spectroscopic constants for both transitions have been obtained and compared to the theoretical results based on the latest published potential curves. Further insight into the mechanism for forming HeH will be presented, which indicates that the formation process is sensitive to the hydrogen vapor pressure above the solid.

Notes: Spectra from proton-beam irradiated helium gas, near 4.2 K, have been examined in the near infrared spectral region using a sensitive photomultiplier-grating spectrometer combination (750–1000 nm) and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with an InGaAs detector (800–1800 nm). Most of the observed features can be assigned to known He2 transitions, and two bands, not previously observed (d 3Σ+u(v=4)→c 3Σ+g(v=3,4)) have been identified and analyzed. Some of the unidentified spectra have qualitative similarity to a set of visible emission lines tentatively assigned to an excimer–dimer (i.e., He4, two He2 excimers weakly bound together). These features, unlike the normal He2 spectra, demonstrate pronounced dependence on both the pressure and temperature of the sample. A comparison of the intensities of the singlet and triplet D(d)→C(c) transitions to the singlet and triplet C(c)→A(a) transitions is made. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Using proton-beam irradiation at 15 MeV, the emission spectra from 3He and 4He doped samples of solid hydrogen and deuterium have been observed from 350–750 nm at 4.2 K. Such samples simulate the conditions of solid tritium or tritiated hydrogens after about six days of helium accretion. The spectra are very similar to pure helium gas spectra acquired at 4.2 K and closer still to spectra acquired using helium gas in the upper portion of a sample cell partially filled with solid hydrogen. The helium collects as macroscopically large bubbles whose pressure has been determined. The pure 4He gas spectrum at 4.2 K contains a band near 460 nm previously assigned to an unspecified excimer–dimer radiative transition. The pressure and isotope dependence of this band is presented which lends support to that interpretation. A mechanism is proposed for the transition.

Notes: Abstract Cytochemical staining and ultrastructural characteristics of peripheral blood leucocytes from the yellow rat snake are described. A panel of cytochemical stains, including demonstration of myeloperoxidase, acid phosphatase, naphthol AS-D chloracetate esterase, alpha-naphthol butyrate esterase and alkaline phosphatase activities; and periodic acid-Schiff and Sudan Black-B staining was performed. Snake heterophils lacked peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activity. Azurophils stained positively for all stains except alkaline phosphatase activity. Lymphocytes showed positive acid phosphatase activity. Differentiation of thrombocytes from lymphocytes was very difficult even with cytochemical staining. Only a minor staining difference was observed with periodic acid-Schiff stain. Thrombocytes exhibited coarse, dark, purple stippling usually located in the polar area of the cytoplasm, whereas lymphocyte staining varied from none to very fine, pale pink granules dispersed throughout the cytoplasm. Ultrastructural characteristics were similar to those of mammalian leucocytes with the exception that the snake basophil granules have no crystalline matrix, and heterophil granules appeared as large, elongate, membrane bound structures of varying density with no distinct core or matrix.

Notes: Abstract Phagocytosis, intracellular calcium flux, oxidant production and bactericidal activity of chicken heterophils and human and canine neutrophils were compared to assess their functional capabilities with respect to resistance of bacterial infection. Five strains of Staphylococcus were compared for bactericidal susceptiblity; two pathogenic strains isolated from chickens with tenosynovitis, a non-pathogenic strain from the tibiotarsal joint of a normal chicken, a pathogenic strain from the femoral joint of a human and a decapsulated derivative of the human strain. As assayed by flow cytometry, latex spheres were phagocytosed by significantly fewer chicken heterophils than by human or canine neutrophils. Phagocytes from all three species responded to stimulation by autologus serum-opsonised zymosan (aOZ) with an intracellular calcium flux, whereas only human neutrophils responded to N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP). None responded to phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). Neutrophils stimulated with aOZ and PMA produced significantly more H2O2 than did heterophils. Human neutrophils produced significantly greater H2O2 than did either canine neutrophils or chicken heterophils in response to FMLP. Greater bactericidal activity was observed against the decapsulated human strain and the non-pathogenic avian strain; this increased killing was found to be significant with the canine and avian cells. Avian heterophils were less phagocytic and produced less oxidant in response to zymosan than canine and human neutrophils. In addition, heterophils did not respond to PMA or FMLP.

Notes: The Flory-Huggins interaction χ and the closely related heat of mixing parameter B were determined for several nitrocellulose-nitrate ester systems. A micromethod which permitted the use of a simplified version of the Flory equation was successful in evaluating the effects of two series of nitrate ester diluents with nitrocellulose. A distinct difference exists between the effect of αω- and α,β-substituted diluents as shown by the χ and B parameters. Generally, the terminally substituted nitrate esters appear to be the better solvents.
