    Notizen: Synopsis Stomach contents of juvenile coho,Oncorhynchus kisutch, and chinook,O. tshawytscha, salmon collected in purse seines off the coast of Washington and Oregon were examined for variations related to predator size. There was a general trend toward increasing consumption of fish with increasing body size, due mainly to the increase in northern anchovy biomass consumed by the larger salmon. Most of the major prey taxa showed significant differences among the size classes examined for both salmon species. There was a direct relationship between predator and prey size for both coho and chinook, but considerable variation was found in prey length consumed within each size class. Prey width did not provide as good a fit as prey length for either species. In general, coho consumed larger fish prey in relation to their body length than chinook but there were substantial differences by month or year of collection.

    Notizen: Abstract Juvenile walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, is the dominant forage fish on the continental shelf of the Gulf of Alaska, yet little is known about the feeding habits of this important interval of pollock life history. The taxonomic composition and size of prey found in the stomachs of age-0 juveniles collected at three nearshore locations in the Gulf of Alaska in September 1990 were compared to the composition and size of zooplankton collected in concurrent plankton tows. The maximum length of prey consumed increased dramatically over the length range of pollock examined (58–110 mm) from approximately 7 mm to 30 mm, due mainly to the consumption of large euphausiids and chaetognaths by the bigger individuals. The maximum width of prey changed little over this size range although there was a general increase in prey width with increasing predator size. The minimum prey length and width did not change with increasing fish size. Juvenile pollock generally selected the larger prey sizes relative to what was available. Juvenile pollock showed a marked preference for adult euphausiids and decapod larvae and an avoidance of copepods and chaetognaths relative to the numbers collected in net tows. These results are discussed relative to the feeding ecology of these juvenile fishes.

    Notizen: Abstract We studied inadvertent egg cannibalism in spawning stocks of walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea between 1986 and 1996. Male pollock had on average 3 times more eggs in their stomachs than females. For both sexes adult fish of average body length had more eggs in their stomach than did smaller or larger fish. When maturity of fish was taken into account, actively spawning males had the highest numbers of eggs in their stomachs. We found weak evidence for a diel variation; the number of eggs per stomach was high in both sexes during the day and lower during the night. We suggest two possible explanations for this phenomenon. Sex-biased egg cannibalism may reflect the differential time spent in layers of high egg densities. Hydroacoustic and trawl catch data from both areas suggest that males aggregate deeper than females. Spawning takes place in the deeper layers of the fish aggregation, so males spend more time in high egg densities. Alternatively, males may be more active than females and increased gill ventilation and/or drinking rates may be responsible for the differences in egg cannibalism.

    Notizen: Translationally active plasmodia of the syncytial slime mold Physarum polycephalum develop into translationally dormant sclerotia during starvation. Although functional mRNA and ribosomes exist in sclerotia, protein synthesis is suppressed at the level of initiation. To test the possibility that alterations in the cytoskeleton may limit protein synthesis, we have examined the distribution of polysomes and actin mRNA in the cytoskeletal (CSK) and soluble (SOL) fractions of Triton X-100-extracted plasmodia and sclerotia. Most of the polysomes and actin mRNA were located in the CSK of plasmodia, while most of the ribosomes and actin mRNA were located in the SOL of sclerotia. The results suggest that ribosomes and mRNA shift from the CSK to the SOL as protein synthesis is suppressed during starvation. Plasmodia and sclerotia can be induced to accumulate excess polysomes by treatment with low levels of the elongation inhibitor cycloheximide. Treatment of plasmodia with cycloheximide caused excess polysomes to accumulate in the SOL, suggesting that the CSK contains a limited capacity for binding translational components and that the association of polysomes with the cytoskeleton is not required for protein synthesis. Treatment of sclerotia with cycloheximide, however, caused polysomes and actin mRNA to accumulate in the CSK, suggesting that the selcrotial cytoskeleton, although depleted in ribosomes and mRNA, is capable of binding translational components. It is concluded that alterations in the sclerotial cytoskeleton are not involved in translational control.

    Beschreibung: Gelatinous zooplankton can dominate the dynamics of marine ecosystems; can have major ecological, social, and economic impacts; are often indicative of broader ecosystem perturbations; and are increasingly being harvested by humans. Yet fisheries scientists typically do not monitor these taxa on a regular basis, despite the existence of clear rationales and even mandated authorizations to do so. Notably, the costs of monitoring jellyfish during regular fisheries research cruises would be a small increase over the cost of running a large fishery survey and a small fraction of the costs caused by impacts from these taxa. As ecosystems experience increasing pressures from climate change and fisheries, we recommend considering routine monitoring before some future jellyfish‐associated crisis arises.

    Beschreibung: Ichthyoplankton samples were collected at approximately2-week intervals, primarily during spring and summer 1999−2004, from two stations located 20 and 30 km from shore near the Columbia River, Oregon. Northern anchovy(Engraulis mordax) was the most abundant species collected, and was the primary species associated with summer upwelling conditions, but it showed significant interannual and seasonal fluctuations in abundance and occurrence. Other abundant taxa included sanddabs (Citharichthys spp.), English sole (Parophrys vetulus), and blacksmelts (Bathylagidae). Two-way cluster analysis revealed strong species associations based primarily on season (before orafter the spring transition date). Ichthyoplanktonabundances were compared to biological and environmentaldata, and egg and larvae abundances were found to be most correlated with sea surface temperature. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation changed sign (from negative to positive) in late 2002 and indicated overall warmerconditions in the North Pacific Ocean. Climate change is expected to alter ocean upwelling, temperatures, andColumbia River flows, and consequently fish eggs and larvae distributions and survival.     Beschreibung: In this study we analyzed the diets of 26 nekton species collected from two years (2000 and 2002) off Oregon and northern California to describe dominant nekton trophicgroups of the northern California Current (NCC) pelagic ecosystem. We also examined interannual variation in thediets of three nekton species. Cluster analysis of predator diets resulted in nekton trophic groups based on theconsumption of copepods, euphausiids, brachyuran larvae, larval juvenile fishes, and adult nekton. However, many fish within trophic groups consumed prey from multipletrophic levels—euphausiids being the most widely consumed. Comparison of diets between years showed that mostvariation occurred with changes in the contribution of euphausiids and brachyuran larvae to nekton diets. The importance of euphausiids and other crustacean prey to nekton indicates that omnivory is an important characteristic of the NCC food web; however it may change during periods of lower or higher upwelling and ecosystem production.
