Notes: Aiming to prove that commercial, 50°CPVC consists of a dual population of chains, has led us to the investigation of the thermal stability of low conversion (0,1-2%) PVC. Bulk polymers prepared at very low conversion levels were shown to be different to high conversion material. The former are more syndiotactic, and have a greater tendency to be less thermally stable, unzippering to long polyene sequences (with n 〉 15). These findings are consistent with the idea that initially-produced PVC is formed by homogeneous polymerisation and that such material is intrinsically different to PVC which is formed at subsequently higher conversions by a heterogeneous route.

Notes: Samples of PVC, plasticized with a range of dialkyl phthalates, linear and branched, have been naturally weathered by exposure for one year in Arizona. The results confirm previous findings, that aromatic plasticizers can act to accelerate the photodehydrochlorination of PVC and that the low photostability of phthalates with long, branched side chains results in a greater level of dehydrochlorination than that produced by either linear or branched shorter alkyl chains. For alkyl groups of the same carbon number, the branched chains produce a greater level of dehydrochlorination than the straight chains. Possible explanations for these observations are considered.

Notes: Samples of PVC, plasticized with a range of aliphatic and aromatic esters, were naturally weathered by exposure for one year in Arizona. Standard weathering tests involve inclining the plasticized PVC sheets at 45 degrees to the horizontal facing south. In this way, the greatest exposure to sunlight is achieved. In the present study, duplicate samples of the plasticized PVC sheets were placed at 0 degrees (i.e., horizontal). Comparison of the degradation levels of these samples with the equivalent samples stored at 45 degrees shows that samples stored horizontally have much higher levels of degradation. This has been interpreted in terms of degradation being caused mainly by short wavelength ultraviolet radiation, which is strongly scattered and reaches the sample from a vertical direction rather than directly from the sun.

Notes: A laser Raman spectroscopic study has been made of the effect of barium and cadmium stabilizers on the thermal dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The results obtained indicate that, in terms of the total level of dehydrochlorination, cadmium stearate is not as superior to barium stearate as the visual appearance of the polymer suggests. Also, the level of dehydrochlorination produced in the presence of a mixed stabilizer is not significantly lower than that produced in the presence of barium stearate alone, while samples of the latter exhibit much stronger color. It has also been shown that cadmium stearate can reduce the length of long polyene sequences, presumably by a reaction near the center of such a sequence.

Notes: A study has been made of the effect of amines, particularly those used as catalysts in the preparation of polyurethane foams, on the dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). It has been shown that when PVC is heated at a temperature of 80°C in the presence of amines the levels of dehydrochlorination produced are considerably greater than those found if no amine is present. This has been attributed to a chemical dehydrochlorination reaction and could well have implications with respect to the physical and mechanical properties of the polymer for certain of its commercial applications.
