Notes: Summary. First-trimester chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was performed in a series of 1250 pregnancies. The direct method of karyotyping was successful in 1205 (96.4%). Abnormal laboratory findings resulted in 60 terminations of pregnancy (4.8%). In addition, six unexpected balanced chromosome rearrangements were detected. False-positive cytogenetic findings occurred in 2.3%, comprising 22 with mosaicism confined to the trophoblast, and a further six non-mosaic false-positive discrepancies were detected, four after termination of pregnancy. The outcome of the first 1000 pregnancies is known in all but one. There were no false-negative findings. Of 947 pregnancies meant to be continued, 34 (3.6%) ended in pregnancy loss before 28 weeks gestation. However, obstetricians with an experience of over 150 procedures had a pregnancy loss of 1.3%.

Notes: The sea water temperature off the Norwegian coast was lower in 1994 than in 1992 and 1993. RNA/DNA ratios of Norwegian spring spawning herring increased with increasing larval dry weight all years, except for larvae sampled south of 62°N in 1994. The RNA/DNA ratios indicated that each year, only a small portion (〈inlineGraphic alt="leqslant R: less-than-or-eq, slant" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:00221112:JFB370:les" location="les.gif"/〉 0.7%) of the larvae were starving. RNA/DNA ratios and temperature were negatively correlated in 1992, but in other years no significant correlations were found. Residuals of In RNA v. In DNA and In W v. Ls were poorly correlated in all years, but residuals of In RNA v. In DNA and In DNA v. In W were negatively correlated in all years. Principal component analysis showed that the RNA/DNA ratio and DNA (% of weight) were correlated with different axes. Abundance data for herring at the early larval and 0-group stages in 1992–1994 indicated higher mortality in 1994 compared with the other years. The data do not indicate that average larval condition was poorer in 1994 than in other years. However, the variability in larval condition was higher in 1994 than in other years, and the condition of later larval stages was relatively lower in 1994 than in other years.

Notes: We examine aspects of marking large numbers of juvenile cod (Gadus morhua L.) by oxytetracycline (OTC) for cod enhancement experiments. Reared cod were given OTC through the feed and released in a fjord. Control groups were kept in net pens. A total of 93% of the cod became marked. The size of the cod and the percentage marked were inversely related. The location of the mark within each vertebra gradually changed towards the centre as the cod grew and new bone tissue was added. The percentage of marked cod in the control group did not decrease during a period of almost 3 years after marking, although the intensity of the mark gradually declined. After release, we found no indication that the OTC affected growth or survival of the cod. Cod marked as O-group could be distinguished from cod marked as 2-group, from the position of the mark within the vertebra.

Notes: Cannibalism in 0-group Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) was investigated in a semi-natural marine pond using stomach content analysis. About 6000 individuals were eradicated by rotenone treatment of the pond in November 1991. Total lengths of cod ranged from 7.4–28.8 cm with a median of 10.4 cm. The proportion of cannibalistic cod in the population was estimated at 1.3%. Cannibalism accounted for a daily loss of 1.1% of the population. The frequency of cod with ≥ 2 cod prey per stomach was higher in the population compared with a Poisson model. Predator-prey length ratios ranged between 1.6 and 3.2 when estimated from otolith-length relationships. Chesson's 1983 α-index indicated that cannibalistic cod had a positive selectivity for conspecifics 〈 9.0 cm in total length.

Notes: Summary Three cases of glioblastoma multiforme are described, occurring in two brothers and the sister of their father. One of the cases was found at autopsy to represent true multicentric glioblastoma, with five widely separated lesions affecting both hemispheres. It is postulated that there may be an association between factors responsible for multiple foci of transformation and a familial tendency to develop glioma.

Notes: Abstract In lake Marken (Markermeer), a shallow lake in the Netherlands, sediment transport and suspended solids concentration are dominated by wind induced resuspension of sediment. The suspended solids concentration in the lake determines the attenuation of light. A 2-dimensional sediment transport model, STRESS-2d, was used to estimate the special distribution of the silt content for periods with different wind conditions. The model was calibrated using measured values of the fall velocity distributions of sediment, freshly deposited material and suspended solids. The specific light attenuation coefficient of the various sediment classes was also measured and used in the light attenuation model, CLEAR, together with simulation results from the STRESS-2d model, to simulate the light attenuation variations in time and space. By comparison of the simulation results for different scenarios, the influence of regional planning features on the sediment balance and the light attenuation can quantified. A provisional example of this method is presented.

Description: Gullestad, P., Aglen, A., Bjordal, Å., Blom, G., Johansen, S., Krog, J., Misund, O. A., and Røttingen, I. 2014. Changing attitudes 1970–2012: evolution of the Norwegian management framework to prevent overfishing and to secure long-term sustainability. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 71: 173–182. Fisheries have been important for livelihood in Norwegian coastal communities for centuries. The development of new fishing technology and increasing fishing capacity posed challenges for the sustainability of the fisheries. The Norwegian spring spawning herring was depleted in the1960s—with dire consequences. This event, and the subsequent efforts to rebuild the stock, was paramount to the gradual development of a coherent Norwegian policy to prevent overfishing and secure long-term sustainability. Nevertheless, overfishing continued during the ensuing transitional decades when a range of new management tools were developed and made effective. Internationally, the extension of the economic zones to 200 nautical miles, and agreement on sharing and management of joint stocks were important elements. At the national level, the development of measures to curb overcapacity, improvement of exploitation patterns through technical regulations, ban on discard and the evolution of procedures for rational decision-making for setting total allowable catches (TACs) on the basis of harvest control rules, were all decisive elements. Another crucial factor was the creation of a whole new profession of fishery inspection. We describe a system of close collaboration between specialists—scientists, fishery managers, and stakeholders—each with a distinct role in building a solid framework to prevent overfishing and secure long-term sustainability.
