    Description / Table of Contents: Summary A method is described in which the direct influence of anoxia and ototoxic agents on the vestibular system can be studied. After fenestration of the lateral semicircular canal in pigeons, a vestibular whole nerve action potential (VAP) could be recorded during acoustic stimulation. The cochlear whole nerve action potential (CAP) was recorded simultaneously. The influence of ototoxic agents and anoxia upon the amplitude of these action potentials was studied.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Darstellung einer Methode zur Untersuchung des Einflusses von Anoxie und ototoxischen Substanzen auf das vestibuläre System. Nach Fensterung des lateralen Bogenganges bei der Taube konnte das Aktionspotential des N. vestibularis während akustischer Reizung registriert werden bei gleichzeitiger Ableitung des Aktionspotentials des N. cochlearis. Der Einfluß ototoxischer Substanzen und von Anoxie auf die Amplituden dieser Aktionspotentiale wurden untersucht.

    Notes: Abstract The capabilities of a gas scintillator camera for use in X-ray astronomy are investigated. Detailed experimental results are presented on both the position and energy resolution over the energy range 0.28 to 6 keV. The energy resolution varies from 38% to 9.5% for 0.28 keV C-K and 6 keV X-rays respectively. Position resolutions of ∼ 1.8 mm and 3.5 mm for 6 keV and 1.5 keV Al-K X-rays were obtained. Image quality and uniformity over the camera aperture are also discussed, whilst further techniques leading to improvements in position resolution are outlined. Finally applications of these cameras in conjunction with grazing incidence and coded mask X-ray optics are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The current status of the investigation of the soft X-ray diffuse background in the energy range 0.1–2.0 keV is reviewed. A consistent model, based on the soft X-ray brightness distribution and the energy spectrum over the sky, is derived. The observed diffuse background is predominantly of galactic origin and considered as thermal emission for the most part from a local hot region of temperature ≈106 K which includes the solar system. Several pronounced features of enhanced emission are interpreted in terms of hot regions with temperatures up to 3×106K, some of which are probably old supernova remnants. The properties of the soft X-ray emitting regions are discussed in relation to the observational results on O vi absorption.

    Notes: Abstract The instrument configuration and performance characteristics of the X-ray imaging telescopes on EXOSAT are described. The instrument comprises two fully independent Wolter I imaging telescopes. Each telescope can be used in either of two principal modes: (i) an imaging mode with either a position sensitive proportional counter or a channel multiplier array plate in the focal plane, (ii) a spectrometer mode which features a 500 lines/mm and/or a 1000 lines/mm transmission grating as dispersive element. Preliminary results from the calibration of the fully integrated experiment indicate an ultimate angular resolution of 8.5 arc sec full width at half maximum or 17.5 arc sec half-power beam width. The ultimate wavelength resolution in the spectrometer mode ranges from 1Å for wavelengths below 50Å, to 5Å at wavelengths near 300Å. A method for estimating the telescope performance is given which reasonably accounts for the influence of the X-ray source spectrum and the degree of interstellar absorption on the counting statistics. A comparison between EXOSAT and the EINSTEIN telescope in terms of band width/resolution and minimum source detectability shows an enhanced potential for EXOSAT relative to EINSTEIN for sources with T ≦ 107K and low column densities (〈 4 × 1020cm−2) and a reduced potential for sources with hard, or heavily cut-off, spectra.

    Notes: Summary Cochlea-deprived pigeons were placed on a rotating platform and stimulated with sound after fenestration of the lateral canal. The whole nerve action potentials evoked by the sound stimulus were suppressed by the rotatory stimulus. The time course of this suppression makes the lateral crista the most acceptable site of generation of the action potential. In another type of experiment, single unit responses were recorded from the lateral ampullary nerve during stimulation with sound. Phase-lock of the response to the stimulus was best for frequencies from 0.5 to 1 kHz.

    Description: We present a proper motion study of the eastern shock-region of the supernova remnant RCW 86 (MSH 14-6 3 , G315.4–2.3), based on optical observations carried out with Very Large Telescope/FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph 2 in 2007 and 2010. For both the north-eastern and south-eastern regions, we measure an average proper motion of Hα filaments of 0.10 ± 0.02 arcsec yr –1 , corresponding to 1200 ± 200 km s –1 at 2.5 kpc. There is substantial variation in the derived proper motions, indicating shock velocities ranging from just below 700 km s –1 to above 2200 km s –1 . The optical proper motion is lower than the previously measured X-ray proper motion of north-eastern region. The new measurements are consistent with the previously measured proton temperature of 2.3 ± 0.3 keV, assuming no cosmic ray acceleration. However, within the uncertainties, moderately efficient (〈27 per cent) shock acceleration is still possible. The combination of optical proper motion and proton temperature rule out the possibility that RCW 86 has a distance less than 1.5 kpc. The similarity of the proper motions in the north-east and south-east is peculiar, given the different densities and X-ray emission properties of the regions. The north-eastern region has lower densities and the X-ray emission is synchrotron dominated, suggesting that the shock velocities should be higher than in the south-eastern, thermal X-ray dominated, region. A possible solution is that the Hα emitting filaments are biased towards denser regions, with lower shock velocities. Alternatively, in the north-east the shock velocity may have decreased rapidly during the past 200 yr, and the X-ray synchrotron emission is an afterglow from a period when the shock velocity was higher.

    Description: Purpose: Immunotherapeutic strategies to treat patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) offer new opportunities for disease management. Further improvements to immunotherapy will require additional understanding of the host response to RCC development. Experimental Design: Using a novel approach to understanding the immune status of cancer patients, we previously showed that patients with a certain immune profile had decreased overall survival. Here, we examine in more detail the phenotypic changes in peripheral blood and the potential consequences of these changes in RCC patients. Results: We found that CD14 + HLA-DR lo/neg monocytes were the most predominant phenotypic change in peripheral blood of RCC patients, elevated nearly 5-fold above the average levels measured in healthy volunteers. Intratumoral and peritumoral presence of CD14 cells was an independent prognostic factor for decreased survival in a cohort of 375 RCC patients. The amount of peripheral blood CD14 + HLA-DR lo/neg monocytes was found to correlate with the intensity of CD14 staining in tumors, suggesting that the measurement of these cells in blood may be a suitable surrogate for monitoring patient prognosis. The interaction of monocytes and tumor cells triggers changes in both cell types with a loss of HLA-DR expression in monocytes, increases of monocyte survival factors such as GM-CSF in tumors, and increased production of angiogenic factors, including FGF2. Conclusions: Our results suggest a model of mutually beneficial interactions between tumor cells and monocytes that adversely affect patient outcome. Clin Cancer Res; 21(18); 4224–33. ©2015 AACR .
