Notes: Surveys of US dental schools over the last 20 years have reported a continual increase in the number and types of predoctoral and postdoctoral implant dentistry programs being taught. The purpose of the following article is to report on the results of a survey intended to update the status of predoctoral programs with respect to their curricular placement, departmental jurisdictions, and course contents. In June 1993, 54 US dental schools received the implant dentistry curriculum survey, and 50 of the schools (93%) returned responses. Results indicate that the trend toward implementation of more predoctoral implant dentistry programs has been sustained, with 86% of schools reporting the existence of implant curricula. This compares with 33% and 73% of US schools having such programs in 1974 and 1989, respectively. The major reasons that schools gave for not having implant dentistry courses for predoctoral students are a lack of curriculum time and scarce financial resources. The dental disciplines most frequently guiding such programs are oral surgery and periodontics. Schools offer varying degrees of lectures, laboratories, and clinical experiences in predoctoral implant dentistry, with the number of curriculum hours peaking in years three and four. General curricular topics most commonly include a historical overview of implant dentistry, diagnosis and treatment planning, classifications and types of dental implants, and surgical and prosthodontic procedures. Seventeen percent of schools require some form of undergraduate clinical implant dentistry exposure for all of their students.

Notes: This study measured the tensile force required to separate a custom implant abutment fixture that had been cast onto a machined component using the Impac custom abutment system (Vident, Baldwin Park, CA). The characteristics of the interface between the cast and machined components were also investigated by scanning electron microscopy x-ray and energy-dispersive (JEOL T330A, Peabody, MA) analysis (Kevex Delta Level 1, San Carlos, CA).〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Materials and MethodsA polycarbonate custom abutment component, attached to a gold alloy component of the abutment, was invested in a phosphate-bonded investment and cast in a type III gold alloy (Argenco, Argen Precious Metals, San Diego, CA). Eight samples were cast after a burn-out of 900°F and 13 samples were cast after a burn-out at 1300°F. The abutment components were pulled in tension in a universal Testing Machine (Instron 4204, Canton, MA) until failure. The interface of as-cast and failed samples were examined by electron microscopy.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ResultsSamples burned out at 1300°F failed at a mean force of 2477 ± 295 N (545 ± 65 Ib), and samples burned out at 900°F failed at a mean force of 2182 ± 91 N (484 ± 20 Ib). Electron microscopy of the interface between the cast and machined components showed retentive tags provided in the design of the machined components. There was also a zone of diffusion between components shown by a zone of void formation within the casting. Failure occurred at the interface of the cast and machined components for all samples.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsThe cast component was retained by a combination of mechanical and chemical mechanisms.

Notes: The use of an indirect electron immunocytochemical labelling procedure for labelling Actinobacillus actinomy cetemcomitans (serotype b) in ultrathin sections of pure bacterial cultures and in localized juvenile periodontitis-derived plaque is described. Optimal labelling was obtained after fixation with 2.5% glutaraldehyde, embedding in glycol methacrylate and labelling with highly diluted absorbed rabbit anti-A. actinomycetemcomtians γ-globulin followed by incubation with diluted goat anti-rabbit γ-globulin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase. and subsequent histochemical visualization of the peroxidase. These labelling conditions were used to determine that no cross reactions existed with commonly found plaque bacteria. Two of 5 labelled plaque specimens were positive for this A. actinamycetemcomitans serotype. In one specimen large numbers of labelled bacteria were located only in the most apical portion of the plaque layer. In another specimen labelled cells were scattered throughout the plaque. Control experiments using normal rabbit γ-globulin were all negative.

Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) encounter spirochetes in the diseased gingival crevice. The purpose of this investigation was to learn more about the nature and potential consequences of in vitro PMN-spirochete interactions. Isolated spirochetes (various strains of Treponema denticola and T. vincentii) were incubated with human peripheral blood PMNs. PMNs were able to interact with these organisms demonstrating increased oxygen consumption, chemoluminescence, and phagocytosis. Serum was not an absolute prerequisite for phagocytosis, but oxygen consumption and chemoluminescence were generally not observed unless organisms were preopsonized with fresh serum. In spite of the fact that large numbers of spirochetes could be identified within PMN phagosomes, biochemical and ultrastructural evidence indicated limited degranulation on the part of the phagocytic cells. This can be contrasted to other plaque organisms which stimulated dose-dependent degranulation in association with the phagocytic process. In fact, PMNs pretreated with soluble extracts of spirochetes, but not with non-spirochetal organisms, were generally less responsive to zymosan-induced degranulation. The data suggest that spirochetes may limit fusion of lysosomes to phagosomes and thereby influence the course of the inflammatory process in response to these as well as other organisms. These findings may be relevant in explaining the mechanisms of infection associated with the colonization of the gingival crevice by spirochetes.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the present paper, an attempt is made to explain the enormous increase in the number of European Starlings since the middle of the past century. Up to now, the following reasons for the increase are given: The climatic changes since the middle of the past century (milder springs, autumns and winters in north and middle Europe), the nestboxes offered everywhere, the extension of meadows, pastures and fruit-cultures (as new feeding grounds). Recent experiments showed that Starlings, which do not breed before their second year in their natural population, breed already in their first year if autumn and spring migration fail to take place. Adult (more than two years old) Starlings show a significantly premature gonadal cycle, if autumn and spring migration fail to take place. There is a direct correlation between non-migration resp. early return to the breeding area, and the number of first year Starlings breeding as well as the course of the gonadal cycle of the population. Furthermore, it can be observed that European Starling populations have continously antedated their arrival at their breeding grounds, and that increasing numbers are wintering at their breeding grounds, or between the breeding grounds and the typical winter areas. This means, that the extent of migration has diminished. Consequently, the following hypothesis can be suggested: The number of first year Starlings already breeding has generally increased as well as the number of second broods (because of earlier first broods). Since Starling populations without regularly breeding first year birds and without regular second broods are already accumulating, the increase of the number of breeding first year birds and the increase of second broods must have resulted in an abnormally high reproductive rate and finally in an increase of the population density and the area of the distribution. The reasons for the enormous increase in numbers of American Starlings are discussed, too: Compared with Europe, the high rate of second broods and breeding first year birds as a possible consequence of the highly resident behaviour may have been responsible.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary It is known, that willow warblers of the northern racePhylloscopus trochilus acredula start fall migration at an earlier age than conspecifics of the southern racePh. t. trochilus. In this paper we have examined the question whether this difference is (1) caused by the different environmental conditions (e.g. photoperiod) to which northern and southern willow warblers are exposed within their respective breeding grounds, or (2) whether it is due to differences in the endogenous organization of the two races. Thirteenacredula from northern Sweden near the arctic circle and 17trochilus from southwest Germany were taken from the nest at an average of 9 days. Approximately one half of each group was subsequently kept in a constant 18:6 hour day, the other half in a constant 12:12 hour day. Plumage development, postjuvenile molt, and changes in body weight and migratory restlessness were investigated. The results are not in agreement with hypothesis (1): In their natural environment the early migrating northern willow warblers are exposed to longer photoperiods prior to fall migration than their southern conspecifics but in this experiment it was the shorter photoperiod that accelerated all processes investigated including migratory restlessness. On the other hand, the results are in agreement with hypothesis (2). Under either experimental condition, acredula began und terminated plumage development and postjuvenile molt at an earlier age thantrochilus. Moreover, in LD 18:6, the onset of Zugunruhe was considerably advanced inacredula as compared withtrochilus. Whether these differences are, in fact, genetically determined cannot be definitely decided until possible effects of early environmental influences are eliminated.
