    Description: We present a new approach to identifying the source and age of paleofluids associated with low-temperature deformation in the brittle crust, using hydrogen isotopic compositions (δD) and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar geochronology of authigenic illite in clay gouge-bearing fault zones. The procedure involves grain size separation, polytype modeling, and isotopic analysis, creating a mixing line that is used to extrapolate to δD and age of pure authigenic and detrital material. We use this method on samples collected along the surface trace of today's North Anatolian Fault (NAF). δD values of the authigenic illite population, obtained by extrapolation, are -89±3‰, -90±2‰, and -97±2‰ (VSMOW) for samples KSL, RES4-1, and G1G2, respectively. These correspond to δD fluid values of -62‰ to -85‰ for the temperature range of 125°C ±25°, indistinguishable from present-day precipitation values. δD values of the detrital illite population are -45±13‰, -60±6‰, and -64±6‰ for samples KSL, G1G2, and RES4-1, respectively. Corresponding δD fluid values at 300°C are -26 to -45‰ and match values from adjacent metamorphic terranes. Corresponding clay gouge ages are 41.4 ±3.4 Ma (authigenic) and 95.8±7.7 Ma (detrital) for sample G2 and 24.6 ±1.6 Ma (authigenic) and 96.5±3.8 Ma (detrital) for sample RES4-1, demonstrating a long history of meteoric fluid infiltration in the area. We conclude that today's NAF incorporated pre-existing, weak clay-rich rocks that represent earlier mineralizing fluid events. The samples preserve at least three fluid flow pulses since the Eocene and indicate that meteoric fluid has been circulating in the upper crust in the North Anatolian Keirogen since that time. As the journal completed its third full year in 2016 (in 2013 only one monthly issue was posted) I am pleased to report that submissions were up significantly. In 2016 we received 159 manuscripts, of which ~120 were sent for external review. The acceptance rate of the journal stayed around the 50% mark, reflecting the high expectations of our reviewers and editors.

    Notes: Abstract The Elzevir Terrane of the Grenville Orogen in southern Ontario contains metapelites and abundant graphitic marbles that were regionally metamorphosed from the upper greenschist to upper amphibolite facies. Comparative thermometry was undertaken with widely used calibrations for the systems garnet-biotite, calcite-dolomite, and calcite-graphite. Temperatures that are obtained from matrix biotites paired with prograde garnet near-rim analyses are usually consistent with those determined using calcite-graphite thermometry. However, calcite-graphite thermometry occasionally yields low temperatures due to lack of equilibration of anomalously light graphite. Application of calcite-graphite and garnet-biotite systems may yield temperatures up to 70 °C higher than calcite-dolomite in amphibolite facies rocks. Calcite-dolomite temperatures most closely approach those from calcite-graphite and garnet-biotite when the samples contain a single generation of dolomite and calcite grains contain no visible dolomite exsolution lamellae. However, some of these samples yield temperatures considerably lower than temperatures calculated from calcite-graphite and garnet-biotite thermometry, indicating that the calcite-dolomite thermometer may have been partially reset during retrogression. Estimated peak metamorphic temperatures of regional metamorphism between Madoc (upper greenschist facies) and Bancroft (upper amphibolite facies) range from 500 to 650 °C. These results place the chlorite-staurolite isograd at 540 °C, the kyanite-sillimanite isograd at 590 °C, and the sillimanite-K-feldspar isograd at 650 °C. Although each thermometer may have an absolute uncertainty of as much as ±50 °C, the 50 to 60 °C temperature differences between the isograds are probably accurate to 10 to 20 °C. An incomplete picture of the thermal gradients can result from the application of only one thermometer in a given area. Simultaneous application of several systems allows one to recognize and overcome the inherent limitations of each thermometer.

    Description: The combined use of grain size and magnetic fabric analyses provides the ability to discriminate among depositional environments in deep-sea terrigenous sediments. We analyzed samples from three different depositional settings: turbidites, pelagic or hemipelagic interlayers, and sediment drifts. Results indicate that sediment samples from these different environments can be distinguished from each other on the basis of their median grain size, sorting, as well as the intensity and shape of magnetic fabric as determined from an examination of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. We use these discriminators to interpret downcore samples from the Bermuda Rise sediment drift. We find that the finer grains of the Bermuda Rise (relative to the Blake Outer Ridge) do not result from lower depositional energy (current speed) and so may reflect a difference in the nature of sediment being delivered to the site (i.e., distance from source) between the two locations.
