Summary A survey is given of the recently introduced oral cephalosporin cefadroxil. The spectrum of activity, human pharmacology and indications of the antibiotic are discussed. Cefadroxil, similar to the other oral cephalosporins with respect to antibacterial properties, differs from the existing oral cephalosporins by its prolonged bioavailability which is not affected when the drug is taken with food. The penetration into body fluids and tissue has been thoroughly investigated. Extensive clinical trials have shown that cefadroxil administered twice daily displays a high degree of efficacy and is well-tolerated in children and adults.

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein Überblick über das neu eingeführte Oralcephalosporin Cefadroxil gegeben. Besprochen werden sein Wirkungsspektrum, die Humanpharmakologie und der klinische Indikationsbereich der Substanz. Bei vergleichbaren antibakteriellen Eigenschaften unterscheidet sich Cefadroxil von den anderen eingeführten Oralcephalosporinen durch eine verlängerte Bioverfügbarkeit, die auch bei Einnahme des Präparates zu den Mahlzeiten nicht eingeschränkt wird. Seine Penetration in Körperflüssigkeiten und-gewebe ist eingehend untersucht. Umfangreiche klinische Erfahrungen haben bewiesen, daß Cefadroxil bei Erwachsenen und Kindern in einer 2×-pro-Tag-Dosie-rung hohe Effektivität bei guter Verträglichkeit gewährleistet.
