Beschreibung: Various environmental variables drive gross primary productivity (GPP) and light use efficiency (LUE) of forest ecosystems. However, due to their intertwined nature and the complexity of measuring absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) of forest canopies, the assessment of LUE and the importance of its environmental drivers are difficult. Here, we present a unique combination of measurements during the 2021 growing season including eddy covariance derived GPP, sap flow, Sentinel‐2 derived canopy chlorophyll content and in situ measured APAR. The importance of environmental variables for GPP models is quantified with state‐of‐the‐art machine learning techniques. A special focus is put on photosynthesis‐limiting conditions, which are identified by a comparison of GPP and sap flow hysteretic responses to Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and APAR. Results demonstrate that (a) LUE of the canopy's green part was on average 4.0% ± 2.3%, (b) canopy chlorophyll content as a seasonal variable for photosynthetic capacity was important for GPP predictions, and (c) on days with high VPD, tree‐scale sap flow and ecosystem‐scale GPP both shift to a clockwise hysteretic response to APAR. We demonstrate that the onset of such a clockwise hysteretic pattern of sap flow to APAR is a good indicator of stomatal closure related to water‐limiting conditions at the ecosystem‐scale.
Beschreibung: Plain Language Summary: The efficiency by which a forest uses sunlight to perform photosynthesis is an important feature for climate and ecosystem modeling. However, the light that is actually captured by forests and is useable for photosynthesis is difficult to assess. Here, we show a sophisticated approach to estimate the light use efficiency of a spruce forest in Germany and analyze environmental influences on it and on photosynthesis. Our results indicate that about 4% of the light useable for photosynthesis was actually used by the forest during the 2021 growing season and that seasonal variations of chlorophyll in the canopy are a good indicator for carbon capture.
Beschreibung: Key Points: A seasonal variable such as canopy chlorophyll content was useful to predict gross primary productivity with machine learning models. A clockwise hysteretic pattern of sap flow to radiation is a good indicator of water‐related stomatal closure. The light use efficiency of green parts of a spruce forest was 4.0% with a standard deviation of 2.3% during the 2021 growing season.

Notizen: Thin films of pure CaF2 and nanocomposite mixtures of Al2O3 with CaF2 were evaporated on Al2O3 substrates. Interdigital electrodes on some of the substrates allowed in situ measurements of the electrical conduction in the films during and subsequent to film growth. Electrical conduction was studied as a function of film thickness, film deposition rate, composition, time, and temperature. The electrical conductivity in pure CaF2 adjacent to an Al2O3 interface sometimes exceeded the bulk CaF2 conductivity (i.e., value at more than 50 nm distance) by as much as a factor of 6700 at 200 °C. The high conductivity is characterized by an activation energy of 0.6±0.1 eV, which is significantly lower than the activation energy of about 1.0 eV for conduction in the bulk. However, this high conductivity is thermally unstable and diminishes in time. A high but stable conductivity was obtained in CaF2 films containing about 10 mol % Al2O3 as a dispersed second phase. At 200 °C, a two-phase film gave a factor of 360 enhancement over the measured bulk CaF2 conductivity and a factor of 7 improvement over the best previously reported conductivity for CaF2-Al2O3 composite materials. The origin of enhanced conduction in CaF2 is attributed to ion transport along dislocations. Dislocations anneal with a characteristic log of time dependence that is recognizable in the annealing behavior of the electrical conductivity. Presumably, the addition of a dispersed second phase of Al2O3 to CaF2 serves both to generate and to pin dislocations; the electrical conductance is thereby enhanced and stabilized.

Notizen: The time evolution of spins-1/2 subject to radiation damping, which is commonly encountered for solvent peaks at high field, is examined in detail. The well-known analytic results for rectangular pulses on undamped spin-1/2 systems are extended to the radiation damped case, and reveal surprisingly complex dynamics. Explanations in terms of Bloch vectors are also presented, and composite pulse sequences which would also be insensitive to radiation damping are proposed. In addition, gradient optimization programs were developed to find shaped π and π/2 pulses insensitive to radiation damping. The optimized pulses compensate for radiation damping effects even when the characteristic damping time is shorter than the pulse length.

Notizen: Local structural information has been obtained from extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure measurements on samples of porous silicon produced under various conditions, and these have been correlated with photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra. The x-ray near-edge structure (XANES) shows the existence of a feature in between those assigned to Si—Si and Si—O bonding. Laser-induced mass analysis indicates that the presence of various silicon hydroxides correlates strongly with the strength of this peak. In addition, although porous silicon consists of a surface whose roughness is of the order of nm, it has been possible to obtain depth-profiling reflected x-ray-absorption fine structure (REFLEXAFS) and reflectivity from some samples. The REFLEXAFS XANES again shows the additional feature, the strength of which increases with the intensity of the Si-Si peak, that is, with depth.

Notizen: We have grown by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy high-purity InP on Si substrates using a GaAs intermediate layer. The InP layers exhibit residual electron concentration as low as 5×1014 cm−3 and electron mobilities as high as 4000 and 25 000 cm2/V s at 300 and 77 K, respectively. The achieved InP quality is dependent on the GaAs intermediate layer thickness. These excellent electrical properties are due to high crystal qualities as evidenced by x-ray rocking curve half width as low as 215 arcsec and defect densities on the order 108 cm−2. p/n junctions, with ideality factors as low as 1.6 and low leakage currents, confirm the device quality of this material.
