    Notes: The final hardware modifications for tritium operation have been completed for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)]. These activities include preparation of the tritium gas handling system, installation of additional neutron shielding, conversion of the toroidal field coil cooling system from water to a FluorinertTM system, modification of the vacuum system to handle tritium, preparation, and testing of the neutral beam system for tritium operation and a final deuterium–deuterium (D–D) run to simulate expected deuterium–tritium (D–T) operation. Testing of the tritium system with low concentration tritium has successfully begun. Simulation of trace and high power D–T experiments using D–D have been performed. The physics objectives of D–T operation are production of ≈10 MW of fusion power, evaluation of confinement, and heating in deuterium–tritium plasmas, evaluation of α-particle heating of electrons, and collective effects driven by alpha particles and testing of diagnostics for confined α particles. Experimental results and theoretical modeling in support of the D–T experiments are reviewed.

    Notes: The formation of internal transport barriers observed in both Joint European Torus (JET) [P. H. Rebut, R. J. Bickerton, and B. E. Keen, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1011 (1985)] and Doublet III-D Tokamak (DIII-D) [J. L. Luxon and L. G. Davis, Fusion Technol. 8, 441 (1985)] are reproduced in predictive transport simulations. These simulations are carried out for two JET-optimized shear discharges and two DIII-D negative central shear discharges using the Multi-Mode model in the time-dependent 1-1/2-D BALDUR transport code [C. E. Singer et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 49, 275 (1988)]. The Weiland model is used for drift modes in the Multi-Mode model in combination with either Hahm–Burrell or Hamaguchi–Horton flow shear stabilization mechanisms, where the radial electric field is inferred from the measured toroidal velocity profile and the poloidal velocity profile computed using neoclassical theory. The transport barriers are apparent in both the ion temperature and thermal diffusivity profiles of the simulations. The timing and location of the internal transport barriers in the simulations and experimental data for the DIII-D cases are in good agreement, though some differences remain for the JET discharges. The formations of internal transport barriers are interpreted as resulting from a combination of E×B flow shear and weak magnetic shear mechanisms. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The predictions of gyrokinetic and gyrofluid simulations of ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) instability and turbulence in tokamak plasmas as well as some tokamak plasma thermal transport models, which have been widely used for predicting the performance of the proposed International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1996 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1997), Vol. 1, p. 3], are compared. These comparisons provide information on effects of differences in the physics content of the various models and on the fusion-relevant figures of merit of plasma performance predicted by the models. Many of the comparisons are undertaken for a simplified plasma model and geometry which is an idealization of the plasma conditions and geometry in a Doublet III-D [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159] high confinement (H-mode) experiment. Most of the models show good agreements in their predictions and assumptions for the linear growth rates and frequencies. There are some differences associated with different equilibria. However, there are significant differences in the transport levels between the models. The causes of some of the differences are examined in some detail, with particular attention to numerical convergence in the turbulence simulations (with respect to simulation mesh size, system size and, for particle-based simulations, the particle number). The implications for predictions of fusion plasma performance are also discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: After many years of fusion research, the conditions needed for a D–T fusion reactor have been approached on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)]. For the first time the unique phenomena present in a D–T plasma are now being studied in a laboratory plasma.The first magnetic fusion experiments to study plasmas using nearly equal concentrations of deuterium and tritium have been carried out on TFTR. At present the maximum fusion power of 10.7 MW, using 39.5 MW of neutral-beam heating, in a supershot discharge and 6.7 MW in a high-βp discharge following a current rampdown. The fusion power density in a core of the plasma is ≈2.8 MW m−3, exceeding that expected in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 3, p. 239] at 1500 MW total fusion power. The energy confinement time, τE, is observed to increase in D–T, relative to D plasmas, by 20% and the ni(0) Ti(0) τE product by 55%. The improvement in thermal confinement is caused primarily by a decrease in ion heat conductivity in both supershot and limiter-H-mode discharges. Extensive lithium pellet injection increased the confinement time to 0.27 s and enabled higher current operation in both supershot and high-βp discharges. Ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating of a D–T plasma, using the second harmonic of tritium, has been demonstrated. First measurements of the confined alpha particles have been performed and found to be in good agreement with TRANSP [Nucl. Fusion 34, 1247 (1994)] simulations. Initial measurements of the alpha ash profile have been compared with simulations using particle transport coefficients from He gas puffing experiments. The loss of alpha particles to a detector at the bottom of the vessel is well described by the first-orbit loss mechanism. No loss due to alpha-particle-driven instabilities has yet been observed. D–T experiments on TFTR will continue to explore the assumptions of the ITER design and to examine some of the physics issues associated with an advanced tokamak reactor. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The scope and detail of physics contained in computational models for fluid (density, momentum, energy) transport in toroidal plasmas have steadily increased during the past two decades. There has been considerable success in the development and verification of models for sources and sinks of particles, energy, momentum, and magnetic flux. Transport codes have collectively become very useful tools in interpreting experimental data and in providing guidance for new experiments. However, a more thorough understanding of the fundamental transport processes of magnetically confined plasmas and development of improved computational models are needed to enhance the predictive capabilities of transport codes. It is argued that fluid transport modeling by itself cannot lead to a complete understanding of transport—there must be a very strong collaboration among theory, experiment, and modeling on both the fluid and kinetic levels.

    Notes: Pseudocercosporella anguioides is reported for the first time from Britain. Isolates were made from the leaf sheaths of four plants of a sample of 2716 with suspected eyespot lesions taken in April 1986 from a winter wheat crop. The eyespot pathogen, P. herpotrichoides, was isolated from 724 plants in the same sample. P. anguioides was not found in a sample of eyespot-infected straws taken from the same crop in July 1986. In infection tests, the P. anguioides isolates produced no obvious lesions on the leaf sheaths of wheat seedlings grown in pots, but were sometimes reisolated from symptomless leaf sheaths. Although P. anguioides occurred infrequently, care is needed to distinguish it from P. herpotrichoides when monitoring the eyespot pathogen.

    Notes: Field plots in three consecutive crops of winter wheat were sampled at approximately 2-week intervals from April to July in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Culm and stem bases were examined for symptoms of eyespot, sharp eyespot and brown foot rot. The W-type and R-type of Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides, P. anguioides, Fusarium culmorum, F. avenaceum and Microdochium nivale grown from this plant material on agar were identified. Eyespot was most severe in 1991, when plant development was least rapid following cool weather in late winter and the summer was relatively cool and wet. Sharp eyespot was most severe in 1990, which had a warm summer with moderate rainfall. The other warm summer, 1989, was drier and these conditions favoured late development of brown foot rot, associated mainly with F. culmorum which was scarce at other times. Sharp eyespot sometimes increased where prochloraz, which decreased eyespot, was applied. Distinct symptoms of more than one disease occurred less frequently on the same stem than expected from the individual total occurrences, but co-occurrences of different fungi were often more frequent than expected. In July 1990, Fusarium spp. co-occurred with R-type, but not W-type, P. herpotrichoides more frequently than expected, and in July 1990 and 1991 M. nivale and both W-type and R-type co-occurred more frequently than expected. Fusarium spp. and M. nivale were more frequent, especially in the earlier samples, on nodes than on internodes, whilst P. herpotrichoides normally infected at the internodes. The results suggest that stems weakened or altered by a primary colonizer are often a suitable substrate for a secondary colonizer, often a Fusarium sp., which may begin infection at a distance from the original lesion and often not cause distinct symptoms itself.

    Notes: Field isolates (n = 144) of the wheat take-all fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt) were tested for sensitivity to silthiofam, a take-all-specific fungicide used as a seed treatment, and identified as A- or B-type by PCR–RFLP analysis of nuclear rDNA. A possible association was identified between polymorphisms in ITS2 of the nuclear rDNA and sensitivity to silthiofam. A Ggt-specific PCR assay was developed which simultaneously identified isolates of Ggt as A- or B-type, based on the polymorphisms in the nuclear rDNA. A highly significant correlation between Ggt type using the PCR assay and sensitivity to silthiofam was demonstrated in a collection of 358 isolates from three field experiments designed to test the effects of seed-treatment fungicides on take-all and Ggt populations in winter wheat. In one experiment the percentages of silthiofam-sensitive and B-type isolates were significantly less in populations from plots sown with silthiofam-treated seed in two consecutive years than in populations from plots sown with nontreated seed. However, silthiofam still provided a significant amount of control of take-all. The natural occurrence of fungicide-insensitive isolates, up to about 30% in soils in which the fungicide had never been used, is unusual. The new PCR assay provides a useful tool for studying the population structure of Ggt, and may provide a novel method for assessing the incidence of insensitivity to silthiofam (the target site for which has not yet been identified) in field populations of Ggt.
