Description: We present the first chlorine isotope compositional data for gases and lavas from Mount Etna (Italy), and to our knowledge, of active Mediterranean volcanism. We investigated lavas erupted and gases discharged during 2008-2011 from a high-temperature fumarole (HT; 〉300°C) and plume gases from both North East and Central Craters. Most of the samples vary in a narrow range of chlorine isotope composition (37Cl values ≈ 0 ± 0.7‰) with gases partially overlapping with rocks. Only HT gases sampled in 2009 have been clearly affected by secondary processes (37Cl values 〉 15.9‰), resulting in partial removal of chlorine and isotopic fractionation producing a 37Cl enrichment in the residual gaseous HCl. These secondary processes also affect, although to a lesser extent, plume gases from North East Crater (NEC). Although post-magmatic processes are able to modify the chlorine isotope composition, 37Cl values are not affected by magma degassing for residual fractions ≥ 0.3 in the melt, or any effect is within our data variability. Finally, 37Cl values and Cl/K ratios of magmatic chlorine constrain the Etnean source to be compatible with depleted mantle (DMM) contaminated by altered oceanic crust (AOC), in agreement with indications from more common isotopic tracers of mantle processes.

Description: Abstract Among the magmatic volatiles, chlorine (Cl) is degassed at shallow depths offering the opportunity to investigate the behavior of magmatic degassing close to the surface, and the possible occurrence of chemical and isotopic fractionation related to gas/melt partitioning. However, it is still unclear if the isotopic composition of Cl (δ37Cl) can be used as a proxy of magmatic degassing. In this work, we investigate the concentrations of chlorine and sulfur, and the Cl isotope composition of rocks and plume gases collected at Stromboli volcano, Aeolian Islands, Italy. This volcano was chosen because it is characterized by persistent eruptive activity (i.e., Strombolian explosions) and by the presence of magma at very shallow levels in the conduits. Rocks belonging to the different magmatic series erupted throughout the formation of the volcano have δ37Cl values ranging between â 1.0 and + 0.7â °. The isotopic composition seems independent of the Cl concentration of the rocks, but shows a negative correlation with SiO2 content. Plume gases have a greater isotopic compositional variability than the rocks (â 2.2â ° â ¤ δ37Cl â ¤ + 1.5â °) and the composition seems related to the level of volcanic activity at Stromboli. Gases collected in 2011â 2013 during days of ordinary eruptive activity are characterized by δ37Cl values ranging from + 0.3 to + 1.5â ° and S/Cl molar ratios between 1.4 and 2.2, similar to previous S/Cl measurements performed at Stromboli with other techniques. Plume gases collected in July 2014, in days of high-level eruptive activity preceding the onset of the 2014 effusive eruption, have negative δ37Cl values (â 2.2â ° â ¤ δ37Cl â ¤ â 0.1â °) and S/Cl between 0.9 and 1.2, which are among the lowest S/Cl values measured at this volcano. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor and the variation in the inclination of very long period (VLP) seismic signal polarization clearly indicate that in July 2014 the intensity and frequency of Strombolian explosions, as well as the level of magma in the conduits, were higher than normal. This suggests that when magmatic degassing occurs at very shallow depths (magma residing at few tens of meters below the craters), isotopic fractionation between gaseous and dissolved chlorine (lnαgas-melt 〉 0) can occur, resulting in a depletion of 37Cl in the melt. Finally, we argue that the range of δ37Cl values measured in rocks and gases at Stromboli overlaps most of the known mantle reservoirs (i.e., DMM, \{HIMU\} and EM-EM1), indicating that the transfer of chlorine from the mantle to the surface occurs without significant isotopic fractionation. This work opens new perspectives for better constraining the isotope signature of chlorine of different magmatic systems and mantle reservoirs on the Earth.

Description: Cowcod (Sebastes levis) is a large (100-cm-FL), long-lived (maximum observed age 55 yr) demersal rockfish taken in multispecies commercial and recreational fisheries offsouthern and central California. It lives at 20–500 m depth: adults (〉44 cm TL) inhabit rocky areas at 90–300 m and juveniles inhabit fine sand and clay at 40–100 m. Both sexes have similar growth and maturity. Both sexes recruit to the fishery before reaching full maturity. Based on age and growth data, the natural mortality rate is about M =0.055/yr, but the estimate is uncertain. Biomass, recruitment, and mortality during 1951–98 were estimated in a delay-difference model with catch data and abundance indices. The same model gave less precise estimates for 1916–50 based on catch data and assumptions about virgin biomass and recruitment such as used in stock reduction analysis. Abundance indices, based on rare event data, included a habitat-area–weighted index of recreationalcatch per unit of fishing effort (CPUE index values were 0.003–0.07 fish per angler hour), a standardizedindex of proportion of positive tows in CalCOFI ichthyoplankton survey data (binomial errors, 0–13% positivetows/yr), and proportion of positive tows for juveniles in bottom trawl surveys (binomial errors, 0–30% positive tows/yr). Cowcod are overfished in the southern California Bight; biomass during the 1998 season was about 7% of the virgin level and recent catches have been near 20 metric tons (t)/yr. Projections based on recent recruitment levels indicate that biomass will decline at catch levels 〉 5 t/yr. Trend data indicate that recruitment will be poor inthe near future. Recreational fishing effort in deep water has increased and has become more effective for catchingcowcod. Areas with relatively high catch rates for cowcod are fewer and are farther offshore. Cowcod die after captureand cannot be released alive. Two areas recently closed to bottom fishing will help rebuild the cowcod stock.

Description: This paper is an attempt to examine how resource economics has been applied in Namibia. Specifically, the lessons learned during three and a half years of practical application of resource economics in environmental planning are identified. To assist in achieving the goal of sustainable, efficient and equitable use of natural resources in Namibia a resource economics programme was initiated in the Directorate of Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Tourism in 1993.
