    Description: 〈jats:title〉Abstract〈/jats:title〉〈jats:p〉Ecological stability refers to a family of concepts used to describe how systems of interacting species vary through time and respond to disturbances. Because observed ecological stability depends on sampling scales and environmental context, it is notoriously difficult to compare measurements across sites and systems. Here, we apply stochastic dynamical systems theory to derive general statistical scaling relationships across time, space, and ecological level of organisation for three fundamental stability aspects: resilience, resistance, and invariance. These relationships can be calibrated using random or representative samples measured at individual scales, and projected to predict average stability at other scales across a wide range of contexts. Moreover deviations between observed vs. extrapolated scaling relationships can reveal information about unobserved heterogeneity across time, space, or species. We anticipate that these methods will be useful for cross‐study synthesis of stability data, extrapolating measurements to unobserved scales, and identifying underlying causes and consequences of heterogeneity.〈/jats:p〉

    Notes: Oligocarbophilic Streptomyces strains capable of hydrocarbon uptake and utilization were isolated from the polluted desert of Kuwait and used in this study. Transmission electron-microscopy of hyphae revealed that they become enriched with large less electron dense areas in the cytoplasm, when biomass samples were incubated with alkanes. The Streptomyces isolate could utilize n-hexadecane as sole carbon and energy source and their fatty acid content showed an increase in the fatty acids with chain length equivalent to those of the alkane substrates. Fluorescence measurements of diphenylhexatriene dissolved in the representative alkane, n-hexadecane, showed that the kinetics of hydrocarbon uptake are quite different in hydrocarbon-utilizer compared with non-utilizer Streptomyces strain. Microviscosity of the cellular membrane of the utilizer strain was also different from that of the non-utilizer control strain Streptomyces griseus after incubation in the presence of n-hexadecane. Very likely the hydrocarbon utilizer transported these compounds more efficiently across their membranes and accumulated them as inclusions in the cytoplasm.

    Notes: Abstract Membranes purified from cells of Streptomyces griseus strain 52-1 possess and ADP-ribosyltransferase acrivity. The enzyme transfers the DP-ribose moiety of NAD to one major membrane protein of Mr 32000 and 2–3 minot proteins of larger molecular weights. The effects of inhibitors on the ADP-ribosyltransferase activity proves that the reaction is enzymatic and suggests that the enzyme ADP-ribosylates the guanidine group of arginine. The kinetics of liberation of ADP-ribose during alkaline hydrolysis of the modified proteins is consistent with the arginine-ADP-ribose bond. This is the first report of ADP-ribosylation of proteins in a Gram-positive bacterium.

    Notes: Abstract Membrane-bound penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of two Streptomyces griseus strains that sporulate well in liquid and solid medium have been investigated during the course of their life-cycle. The PBP patterns were analyzed by sodium dodecylsulphate polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis and fluorography. One strain (No. 45 H) has only a single band (mol wt: 27,000) in early log phase, and two additional PBPs of higher mol wt (69,000 and 80,000) in the late log phase. The other strain (No. 2682) possessed two bands with mol wts 27,000 and 38,000 which did not change during its vegetative phase. In strain No. 2682, a new PBP with a mol wt of 58,000 appeared in spore membranes while one of those (mol wt 38,000) present in mycelial membranes disappeared. Our results suggest that appearance of the new PBP in the spore may be associated with the sporulation process. The major PBP band (mol wt: 27,000) present in all stages of the life cycle of these strains, may be characteristic of S. griseus while the other PBPs reflect certain stages of the life cycle. A new method was developed for the production of spore protoplasts by consecutive enzymatic treatments.

    Notes: Abstract The isolated cell wall of Streptomyces griseus 52–1 strain labelled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and containing wall-bound autolytic enzyme was lysed as a function of different cations. The autolysis was accelerated by aminoglycoside antibiotics (streptomycin and the structurally closely related neomycin) which have a polycationic character. Since this strain is a streptomycin producer it is suggested that streptomycin may have a regulatory function on autolysis.
