Notes: [Auszug] Bardet–Biedl syndrome (BBS) is an uncommon autosomal recessive condition characterized by mental retardation, post–axial polydactylia, obesity and pigmentary retinopathy. We performed linkage analysis in 31 multiplex BBS families and report significant linkage with two markers on ...

Notes: Abstract Treatment with dimethipin (2,3-dihydro-5,6-dimethyl-1,4-dithiin 1,1,4,4 tetroxide) inhibited the increase in cellulase activity and decrease in breakstrength associated with the normal course of abscission in Coleus. Application of the surfactant UBI-1126 (Emery OAL 20 in isopropyl alcohol) increased cellulase activity and accelerated the process of abscission in Coleus expiants within 24 h of application. Cellulase activity was localized histochemically at the electron microscopic level in surfactant-treated tissue. The enzyme activity was localized primarily in the cell wall, middle lamella, and paramural bodies of abscission zone cells.

Notes: Abstract Petioles of expiants ofColeus blumei Benth. exposed to 20 μl/l ethylene abscised within 36 h. Pretreatment of expiants with 4 mM silver thiosulfate (STS) inhibited ethylene-induced abscission. Delaying treatment with STS reduced its effectiveness in retarding ethylene-promoted abscission, suggesting that some events leading to abscission are initiated during the first hours of ethylene treatment. Microscopic study of abscission zones of ethylene-treated expiants showed greatly increased amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum, disruptions of the plasma membrane, and some cell separation in the region of the middle lamella. Pretreatment with STS prevented ethylene-induced reorganization of the endomembrane system and the subsequent middle lamellar dissolution.

Notes: Abstract Suspension cultures with cell doubling times of ca. 2 days were developed from the halophytic grass Spartina pectinata. Maximum rates of exponential growth measured by direct cell counts and by total culture packed-cell-volume were not significantly reduced by NaCl up to 200 mM but dropped beyond this point. In contrast, total cell production over a one week culture cycle, by both measures, was reduced in a roughly linear fashion between 0 and 500 mM NaCl. The pattern of growth in relation to NaCl is very similar to that of previously described cell suspensions derived from another halophyte, Distichlis spicata. In the field the latter is much more salt tolerant. The basis for the whole plant differences is not clear. They do not appear to reflect effectiveness of cell based salt tolerance or the presence of salt glands, which are reported here for the first time in S. pectinata and are found on the leaves of both species.

Description: Peat saturated hydraulic conductivity, K sat , declines strongly with increasing degree of decomposition, providing a potentially important negative ecohydrological feedback that may buffer peatlands from climate-induced drying. However, the quantitative nature of this relationship is poorly understood. We measured downcore changes in K sat and carbon-to-nitrogen concentration quotients (C/N) in fourteen shallow (∼0.5 m deep, 0.1 m diameter) peat cores from a Swedish raised bog. We used the C/N measurements to approximate the fraction of original peat mass remaining. A linear mixed effects (LME) model predicts log 10 ( K sat ) from i) our C/N-derived estimate of fractional remaining mass; ii) depth; iii) microhabitat (hummock, hollow); and iv) location (treeless bog center, treed bog margin). The LME model indicated no significant random effects or interactions between predictors, so we derived a non-linear multiple regression (NLMR) model to predict K sat on its original scale. Both LME and NLMR models predict that K sat decreases exponentially with depth and that K sat is lower beneath hollows than beneath hummocks for equivalent depths below the surface. Fractional remaining mass was an important predictor in the LME model, but not in the NLMR model. The distinction between central and marginal areas of the bog was not an important predictor. We demonstrate for the first time that the relationship between fractional remaining mass and K sat is log-linear, and suggest revisions that should be made to peatland development models. In particular, depth – usually ignored in modeling studies – exerted a strong control over K sat independently of decomposition and should be included explicitly in model algorithms.
