Notes: Abstract. Five VHSV isolates from different host species and Spanish geographical locations and three viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) international reference serotypes (F1, F2 and 23˙75) were studied by several characterized monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) including a neutralizing MAb to four structural proteins of VHSV. We report here the lack of reaction between anti-M1 and some of the isolates of VHSV and the homogeneity of most of the isolates with respect to the MAbs tested. The reagents obtained will improve diagnostic tests which currently use polyclonal antibodies.

Notes: Summary Virus free supernatants (VFS) obtained by ultracentrifugation of homogenates of African swine fever (ASF) virus infected cultures inhibited the proliferative response and the expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of two activation molecules, the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) and the swine MHC class II antigens (SLA II), induced by several stimuli (lectins, PMA plus the calcium ionophore A23187 or specific antigen). This inhibition was time dependent: no effect was seen on IL-2R expression when VFS was added after 48 h, when the expression of this molecule reached its maximum. However at this time the proliferative response was still inhibited. The presence of VFS in the cultures was necessary to inhibit both the IL-2R expression and the proliferation of cells. In these conditions the addition of exogenous IL-2 to the cultures failed to restore the IL-2R expression and the proliferation shown by control stimulated cells. Furthermore, the IL-2 activity found in supernatants from cell cultures stimulated with Con A in the presence of VFS was even higher than in cultures stimulated without VFS. The inhibition observed suggests an important impairment of host immunocompetence in ASF infected swine.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Properties of Tris (diphenylamino) PhosphineThe synthesis and some properties of tris(diphenylamino)phosphine are described. Displacement of the chlorine atom is readily achieved by reaction of (Ph2N)2PCl with Ph2NSime3. Thus tris(diarylamino)phosphine (Ph2N)3P is obtained almost in quantitativ yield. The aminolysis reaction of PCl3 or (Ph2N)2PCl with Ph2NH gives also (Ph2N)3P. The properties and structure of the phosphine on basis of spectroscopical and X-ray investigations are discussed.

Description: Vinylidene-acetylene isomerization is the prototypical example of a 1,2-hydrogen shift, one of the most important classes of isomerization reactions in organic chemistry. This reaction was investigated with quantum state specificity by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of the vinylidene anions H 2 CC and D 2 CC and quantum dynamics calculations. Peaks in the photoelectron spectra are considerably narrower than in previous work and reveal subtleties in the isomerization dynamics of neutral vinylidene, as well as vibronic coupling with an excited state of vinylidene. Comparison with theory permits assignment of most spectral features to eigenstates dominated by vinylidene character. However, excitation of the 6 in-plane rocking mode in H 2 CC results in appreciable tunneling-facilitated mixing with highly vibrationally excited states of acetylene, leading to broadening and/or spectral fine structure that is largely suppressed for analogous vibrational levels of D 2 CC.

Description: The increase in dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) biosynthesis measured in several nitrogen-limited marine algae may partially replace other less dense organic solutes such as glycine betaine (GBT). This raises the possibility that phytoplankton could synthesize the denser organic solute DMSP in low nutrient oceanic surface waters facilitating sinking into zones of the euphotic zone richer in nutrients and maximizing their growth, hereafter referred to the "DMSP-ballast" hypothesis. The objective of this study was to test the DMSP-ballast hypothesis by modeling the sinking rates of the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and two strains of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi as a function of DMSP synthesis in nitrogen-limited conditions. We also explored the potential ballast effect of DMSP in the positively buoyant non-motile algal species Ethmodiscus rex and Pyrocystis noctiluca . The model results suggest that replacement of trimethylammonium and GBT by DMSP in the naked E. huxleyi strain and T. pseudonana grown under nitrogen limitation could increase the sinking rate by 1–22%; while a putative increase in DMSP synthesis (in the millimolar range) in E. rex and P. noctiluca could decrease the rising rate by 43% to several orders of magnitude. The present study suggests a potential ballast role for DMSP in phytoplankton.
