    Notes: Back pain and minor neurological symptoms are commonly experienced postpartum, often being attributed to non-specific causes such as maternal obstetric factors, or the use of epidural analgesia. We report a case in which neurological problems associated with a prolapsed intervertebral disc occurred after epidural analgesia in labour and a normal vaginal delivery.

    Notes: Measurements from the upgraded Finapres 2300e continuous noninvasive blood pressure monitor, the Finapres 2300 and Colin oscillometric noninvasive blood pressure monitor were compared with invasive arterial line blood pressure readings. Fifteen young Chinese patients undergoing elective spinal surgery of more than 2 h duration had contemporaneous blood pressure measurements digitally recorded every minute. Data were analysed using methods described by Bland and Altman to assess agreement of noninvasive devices with an arterial line. Results showed that although the Finapres 2300e was significantly more accurate than the Finapres 2300 and Colin noninvasive blood pressure monitors it could not be recommended as a substitute for continuous arterial line blood pressure monitoring. Both Finapres devices demonstrated reductions in accuracy related to time (drift) and over-read diastolic and mean pressures by 5–8 mmHg throughout the range of mean arterial line pressures (bias). The Colin was consistently less accurate than the Finapress monitors and performed worst at low mean arterial line pressures.

    Notes: Attempts to increase European biodiversity by restoring rivers and floodplains are based on inadequate data on natural systems. This is particularly the case for NW European rivers because all catchments have been impacted by agriculture and river engineering. If river restoration is to have an ecological, as opposed to `cosmetic' design basis then baseline models are required. However, this poses three questions; (a) what is the natural river-floodplain state, (b) how can it be defined and modelled and (c) can this state be recreated today? The first two questions can only be addressed by using palaeohydrological and palaeoecological data. A second and equally vital consideration is the stability/instability of any restored system to change in external forcing factors (e.g. climate) and in this context it may not be realistic to expect baseline models to provide equilibrium solutions but instead to define process-form domains. Over the last two decades evidence has accumulated that the natural state of lowland rivers in much of NW Europe was multi rather than single thread-braided, anastomosing or anabranching. Until recently our knowledge of floodplain palaeoecology was generally derived from pollen diagrams, which have source-area of problems and lack of taxonomic specificity. The precision and breadth of palaeoecological reconstruction (including richness and structure) has been greatly increased by the use of multiple palaeo-indicators including macrofossils, diatoms and beetles. The dynamics of small to medium sized, low-energy, predeforestation floodplains were dominated by disturbance (windthrow, beavers, etc.) and large woody debris. In order to compare the hydrogeomorphological basis of floodplain ecology, both temporally and spatially, a simple index of fluvial complexity is presented. Palaeoecological and geomorphological investigations have the potential to provide in-depth models of the natural range of channel conditions and sensitivity to external change that can be used to provide a scientific basis for floodplain restoration. There is also the possibility that floodplain-channel restoration may be a valuable tool in the mitigation of future geomorphological change forced by climatic instability.

    Notes: Summary Microelectrode recordings were made from cutaneous afferent fibre collaterals in the lumbar dorsal columns of cats, which were antidromically excited from the dorsal column at C2. The following types of cutaneous afferent unit have axon collaterals which ascend the dorsal columns to the dorsal column nuclei; hair follicle units Types G (36.4%) and T (31.8%), slowly-adapting units Types I (8.3%) and II (5.3%) pad mechanoreceptor units (8.3%) and a few high threshold units. The conduction velocities of dorsal column collaterals were measured. All collaterals had slower velocities than corresponding peripheral nerve fibres and the degree of slowing was determined by the class of afferent unit, with the pad units slowing the least and Type T hair follicle units the most. The differential slowing was confirmed by recording compound action potentials from various parts of dorsal column-peripheral nerve pathways.

    Notes: Summary Microelectrode recordings were made from ascending fibres of the spinocervical tract in spinal, decerebrate and anaesthetized cats. Three types of unit were recognised in spinal cats on the basis of their response to mechanical stimulation; units excited by 1. hair movement; 2. hair movement and skin pressure; 3. pressure and pinch of the skin. Five types were recognised in decerebrate and anaesthetized cats; units excited by 1. movement of guard hairs and skin pressure; 2. movement of tylotrich hairs; 3. movement of all the hairs and skin pressure; 4. pressure and pinch of the skin; 5. units which could not be influenced from the periphery. The presence or absence of inhibitory fields and the mean rate of spontaneous discharges depended on the type of preparation and the type of unit. The differences between spinal and decerebrate or anaesthetized cats suggest that a descending neuronal system, intact in the decerebrate and anaesthetized animals, operates to control the input to the spinocervical tract. The mean frequency of response of units sensitive to hair movement was related to the velocity of hair movement by a power function. All units responded with an increased frequency of discharge to heating the skin to high temperatures, the degree of response depending on the preparation and type of unit. Some units responded with an increased discharge to low skin temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract  Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons in the lumbosacral spinal cord of cats anaesthetized with chloralose and paralysed with gallamine triethiodide. The SMT cells were antidromically fired from the posterolateral parts of the superior colliculus and the intercollicular region, were located in laminae IV to VIII, and had response properties and axonal conduction velocities similar to those described previously. The effects of stimulating the dorsolateral funiculus of the cervical cord at C3 and rostral C1, below and above the termination of spinocervical tract (SCT) axons in the lateral cervical nucleus, were examined on 33 SMT cells. The strength of stimulation was adjusted so that at C3 it was above threshold for antidromic activation of SCT cells and at C1 was below threshold for activation of the same cells. Seven (21%) SMT neurons were excited from C3 but not from C1. The remaining 26 (79%) were excited from both C3 and rostral C1 and 23 (70% of these) were excited significantly more from C3. That is, 91% of the total sample were either excited only from C3 or more strongly from C3 than from rostral C1. We discuss the possible neuronal systems involved and conclude that the greater excitatory effects from C3 are most likely due to antidromic activation of the SCT. The shortest latency effects from C3 indicate a monosynaptic linkage between SCT cells with the fastest axons and the SMT. The longer latency actions may be due to monosynaptic connexions from SCT cells with slower conducting axons, to di- or polysynaptic actions from SCT cells with fast axons, or a combination of both. SMT cells are another population of spinal neurons, in addition to postsynaptic dorsal column, spinothalamic and dorsal horn spinocerebellar neurons, which receive excitation via SCT collaterals.

    Notes: Abstract Extracellular microelectrode recordings were made from single cells of the lateral cervical nucleus (LCN) in cats anaesthetized with chloralose and paralysed with gallamine triethiodide. The cells were tested for antidromic activation from the contralateral medial lemniscus and the contralateral tectum. Seventytwo LCN units were recorded which projected to one or both targets. Sixty (83%) projected through the medial lemniscus, and of these 36 (50% of the total) also projected to the tectum, whereas 24 (33%) projected through the medial lemniscus only; 12 (17%) projected only to the tectum. Twenty-nine units (40%) were excited by moving hairs of the coat but not by pinch of the skin, and 9 (31%) of these projected to the tectum, 11 (38%) through the medial lemniscus and 9 (31%) to both targets. Forty units (56%) were excited by hair movement and noxious pinch, and 3 (7%) of these projected to the tectum, 10 (25%) through the medial lemniscus and 27 (68%) to both targets. Three units (4%) had no discernible receptive fields and they all projected through the medial lemniscus, but not to the tectum. Of the 12 units projecting only to the tectum, 11 had receptive fields completely or partially on the trunk. Units projecting either through the medial lemniscus only, or through the medial lemniscus and also into the tectum, had receptive fields more widely distributed: these included small fields on the fore- and hind feet, on the limbs and also, a minority, on the trunk. Units with glove- or stocking-like receptive fields projected through the medial lemniscus. The results show that while most LCN cells project through the medial lemniscus, those excited by hair movement alone preferentially project either to the tectum or through the medial lemniscus, but not by both routes. The differences in receptive field properties of the differently projecting units are discussed in terms of the possible functions of the spinocervical system.
