    Notes: Abstract The diurnal and weekly variability of tardive dyskinesia (TD) was assessed instrumentally by digital image processing. Weekly assessments were obtained in ten patients over a 6-week period. In six of the ten patients, assessments were obtained four times over a single 12-h period. Results indicate that TD movements measured by instrumental assessment vary from week to week and throughout the day. Factors that appear to have affected the variability were changes in medications and the time of day when the assessments were conducted.

    Notes: The natural environment around us, which is often crowded, cluttered or even foggy, is subject to a dynamically changing composition of objects and events. The human brain is continuously perceiving, recognizing and evaluating this dynamic scene composition. If the perception of degraded visual objects is important, e.g. in the case of potential threat stimuli, the brain needs to be more sensitive in detecting these objects from the natural environment. It is therefore hypothesized that reacting to the dynamically changing environment involves a robust and quick processing of salient information, which can be either with or without conscious awareness. We investigated the dynamics and robustness of perception using pictures of three salience levels, i.e. fearful faces (most salient), neutral faces (salient) and houses (nonsalient), which appear from dynamically decreasing random visual noise. Stimuli were matched for luminance, contrast, brightness and spatial frequency information. Reaction times show a significantly earlier response for faces than for houses. Fearful faces were significantly more quickly detected than neutral faces. The neural correlates sustaining robust perception were investigated with event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The amygdala showed a significant perception-related response for faces, as compared to houses, that was further enhanced for fearful faces as compared to neutral faces. Our data indicate that emotionally salient information processing is (i) mediated by the amygdala and (ii) more robust than for nonsalient stimuli as it shows a significantly lower perceptual threshold.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was performed to investigate the reliability and validity of a new device for the assessment of oral dyskinesias by means of digital image processing. Twenty schizophrenic patients with tardive dyskinesia (TD) and ten healthy controls were studied. In patients instrumental scores were compared to different clinical rating scale scores. Measurements were repeated after 2 weeks under the same circumstances to assess test-retest stability. Instrumental scores discriminated well between normal subjects and dyskinetic patients and correlated significantly with clinical ratings (r=0.63). The test-retest correlations showed a correspondence not larger than 40%, detecting thus the fluctuation of the TD intensity over time. These results suggest that our device is a reliable and easy to handle technique for the assessment of TD. Furthermore, the ability of the device to analyze the frequency distribution of movements makes it a useful tool for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of TD.

    Notes: Abstract Influence of respiration on photosynthesis in Synechocystis PCC6803 was studied by measuring the redox transients of cytochrome f (cyt f) upon excitation of the cells with repetitive single turnover flashes. Upon the addition of KCN the flash-induced oxidation of cyt f was increased and the rereduction of cyt f+ was accelerated. Dependence of these effects on the concentration of KCN clearly demonstrated the existence of two cyanide-sensitive oxidases interacting with photosynthesis: cyt aa3, which was sensitive to low concentrations of cyanide, and an alternative oxidase, which could be suppressed by using ≥1 mM KCN. The interaction between the photosynthetic and the respiratory electron transport chains was regulated mainly by the activity of the alternative cyanide-sensitive oxidase. The oxidative pathway involving the alternative cyanide-sensitive oxidase was insensitive to salicyl hydroxamic acid and azide. The close resemblance of the inhibition pattern reported here and that described for chlororespiration in algae and higher plants strongly suggest that an oxidase of the same type as the alternative cyanide-sensitive oxidase of cyanobacteria functions as a terminal oxidase in chloroplasts.

    Description: Diatoms are important primary producers not only in the oceans but also in the freshwater environment. The efficiency of biomass formation strongly depends on the metabolic regulation of carbon and nutrient assimilation. Recent studies have given evidence that many metabolic regulations are quite different from green algae and higher plants. The major known differences concern the following processes: (1) pigment biosynthesis, (2) lightharvesting organisation, (3) mechanism of photoprotection, (4) regulation of photosynthetic electron flow, (5) regulation of the enzyme activity in the Calvin-Benson cycle, (6) photorespiration, (7) carbon aquisition and CO2-concentrating mechanisms, (8) synthesis and breakdown of storage products under starvation, (8) nutrient uptake (9) adaptation to extreme environments. This review summarises these differences phenomenologically and presents the actual knowledge of the underlying mechanisms. The availability of whole genome sequence data is an important basis to learn in more detail how photosynthesis in these tremendously successful primary producers is regulated.
