Notes: Abstract It is usually assumed that earthquakes in intraplate regions occur in the upper crust, and northwestern Italy is generally assigned to this kind of ‘normal’ seismicity. In this work, the depth distribution of the events localized in this area by the Istituto Geofisico Geodetico (IGG) seismic network in the period 1991–1997 is analyzed in detail. In particular, the location capability of the network is discussed, adopting as reference quarry blasts (for the epicentral position) and the locations obtained from a dense temporary network (for the depth estimate). Within the so-obtained error limits, the depth distribution of events show a characteristic pattern: while for most of the area covered by the network the well-located seismicity lies within the first 20 km of depth, in a band following the inner arc of the Western Alps, numerous events have anomalously large focal depths, reaching a maximum of 114 km. These depth determinations cannot be attributed to instabilities of the location procedure: different choices of the propagation models used for the hypocentral determination led to very similar depth values, always significantly larger than the standard values for the surrounding areas. A strong correlation has been found between the 3-dimensional distribution of these foci and the P-wave propagation anomalies obtained from tomographic studies, suggesting a direct link between elastic and rheological properties of lower crust and upper mantle in this area.

Description: The storage concession "Minerbio Stoccaggio" (Bologna, Northern Italy) covers a 69 km 2 area, 65% of hich is located in the Minerbio municipality. Since 1979, a microseismic network for the monitoring of seismicity, eventually induced by gas storage activities, has been installed in this area. The network was operated by Stogit S.p.A, a subsidiary company of Snam, which is the largest storage operator in Italy. In 2016, the microseismic network, consisting of three surface stations and one 100-m-deep borehole sensor with minimum interstation distances of about 3.0 km, was integrated with 12 regional stations installed in an 80 × 80 km 2 area centered on the surface projection of the reservoir. In 2018, the microseismic network was enhanced by adding one surface and three 150-m-deep borehole stations. In this work, we evaluate the detection improvement of the microseismic network, integrated with the regional stations. We define two crustal volumes for earthquake detection: the inner domain of detection, IDD (10 × 10 × 5) km 3 , within which we should ensure the highest network performance, and the extended domain of detection, EDD (22 × 22 × 11) km 3 . By comparing the simulated power spectral density of hypothetical seismic sources located in EDD with the average power spectra of ambient seismic noise observed at each station site, we calculate detection and localization thresholds for the two above-mentioned networks. Under unfavourable noise conditions, we find that the present operative seismic network allows locating earthquakes with M L ≥ 0.8 occurring at the depth of the reservoir and with M L ≥ 1.0 if located within IDD.

Description: This paper describes and discusses the new site characterization scheme adopted for version 2.0 of the INGV (Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology) Strong Motion Database (ISMD), published on-line in August 2016. To date, the web portal includes more than 145,000 three-component accelerometric waveforms that have been generated by more than 1,200 Italian earthquakes with local magnitude (ML) ≥3.0 and 213 strong-motion stations. Besides the real time distribution of accelerometric data and metadata recorded by INGV and regional partners strong motion networks, one of the main goals of ISMD is to provide a detailed characterization of recording sites from the geological, geomorphological, and geophysical points of view. ISMD allows the correct use of these strong-motion data for a large variety of applications in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering and it allows assessing the soil and topographic categories, as indicated in the current Italian and European seismic codes. To date ISMD represents the first repository for a homogeneous site characterization and classification for the INGV strong-motion stations, intended to be updated in relation to new available data and institutional projects.

Description: ScienzAperta is an outreach science venue that the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia started in 2011 as the spring of science: the doors of the headquarters of science were finally opened to public. A number of events, conferences, seminars, guided tours through the Institute and its laboratories are every year offered to general public. The venue is held in most of the cities where the Institute is located, priority to high seismic and/or volcanic risk regions. On May 2014 we held ScienzAperta for the first time in Milano and open up the doors to schools specifically dealing mostly with seismic hazard in a region where general public not necessarily think it might We offered students conferences, seminars and educational activities to highlight the fun of science and jet raise awareness on proper behaviours in case of earthquake shaking. We asked students and teachers, from elementary to high schools, to fill in a questionnaire that we use to evaluate the appreciation the venue had. One hundred years after Giuseppe Mercalli’s death we could not forget to celebrate his science the city where he was born.

Description: This work summarizes the characteristics of a strong motion network (RAIS, in Italian: “Rete Accelerometrica in Italia Settentrionale”, Strong Motion Network in Northern Italy) installed in northern Italy since 2006. The main goal of the RAIS is both to collect data with a wide range of magnitude, allowing us to increase the knowledge of the covered area, and to assure real time high quality data in case of strong events. For each recorded earthquake data are automatically processed in order to fast disseminate the most important ground motion parameters (peak ground acceleration and velocity, 5% damped acceleration, pseudo-velocity and relative response spectra, Arias and Housner intensities). Moreover, for each event, at each recording site, the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio are calculated. The analysis and metadata related to each event are collected in a web site (http://rais.mi.ingv.it) while the waveforms are distributed at different data center.

Description: Since hydrofracking is used for shale gas production, human induced seismicity has become a subject of increasing interest, especially in the US and Canada (Ellsworth, 2013). In Italy, however, hydraulic fracturing is not practiced, not only because the appropriate shale gas formation is lacking, but also because the technical commission of the Ministry of the Environment outlawed the use of any type of fracking technology for hydrocarbon exploitation (Zaratti, 2013).

Description: During the August-September 2016 Amatrice, Mw 6.0, seismic sequence, the real time INGV strong mo-tion data sharing was assured by the INGV Strong Motion database (ISMD). Starting on August 24th, the main task of the web portal was to archive, process and distribute the strong-motion waveforms rec-orded by the permanent and temporary INGV accelerometric stations for the earthquakes with magnitude ≥ 3.0, occurring in the Amatrice area and surroundings. At present (i.e. September 30th, 2016), ISMD freely provides more than 21.000 strong motion waveforms to all users. In particular, about 2.200 strong motion waveforms were recorded by the temporary network installed for the earthquake sequence monitor-ing in the epicentral area by SISMIKO and EMERSITO working groups. In addition, for each permanent and temporary recording site, the web portal provides a comprehensive description of the necessary infor-mation to properly use the strong motion data.
