Notes: Background:  This study examined the immunohistochemical expression of cell-cycle related molecules as well as cell proliferation and pathologic findings in oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in order to clarify their pathobiologic and prognostic significance. Methods:  A total of 46 oral SCC specimens were analyzed using Ki-67, minichromosome maintenance 2 (MCM2), p53, p27, p21, and TUNEL. Aspects including tumor differentiation, mode of carcinoma invasion, tumor metastasis, and patient prognosis were compared among the specimens. Results:  A significantly higher MCM2 labeling index (LI) was observed in the moderately differentiated SCCs when compared to the well-differentiated SCCs (P 〈 0.05). The higher MCM2 LI was correlated with mode of invasion Grade 4 (infiltrative growth) and patient prognosis. In contrast, the LIs of Ki-67, TUNEL-signal, p53, p27, and p21 were not correlated with patient prognosis. Conclusion:  Higher MCM2 LI provides useful information for patient prognosis in oral SCCs.

Notes: Atactic polypropylene was irradiated in vacuo, in O2, and in Cl2 with 60Co γ-rays, and changes in polymer structure were investigated by means of IR and ESR measurements of the irradiated polymer and by mass spectrometry of gaseous products. The irradiation in vacuo mainly produced H2 with small amounts of lower hydrocarbons (C1 - C3). As a radical product, only an alkyl radical was observed. The increase in IR absorption at 886 cm-1 indicated the formation of vinylidene unsaturation. The irradiation in O2 produced oxygenated products such as CO, CO2, and H2O with a reduced amount of H2. In the irradiation in Cl2, HCI was a main gaseous product. The existence of C—Cl bonds and a small amount of polyenyl groups in the irradiated polymer indicated that the radiation-induced chlorination of APP was partly followed by elimination of HCl through a zip mechanism.

Notes: Gamma-ray-induced graft copolymerization of butadiene with vinyl monomers onto PVC was attempted to improve the physical properties of PVC. The Izod impact strength was increased from 2 kg·cm/cm2 to more than 100 kg·cm/cm2 by grafting ca. 10% butadiene. But the tensile strength and melt flow were decreased by the grafting. The electron micrograph showed that the mass of polybutadiene in the graft copolymer had a convenient diameter (0.1-1 μ) for absorbing the impact energy. The weatherability of PVC grafted with butadiene was improved by cografting of butadiene with acrylates and methacrylates which had long side chains.

Notes: Atactic polypropylene (APP) was dissolved in CCl4 and irradiated with 60Co gamma rays in various gas atmospheres (air, O2, N2, and Cl2). A small amount of the irradiated APP was blended with polyethylene (PE) as a sensitizer for photodegradation of PE. There was no significant acceleration of decrease in yield strength of PE with UV exposure when oxidized APP or chlorinated APP was used. On the contrary, the use of the APP which was both oxidized and chlorinated caused a considerable acceleration of decrease in both yield strength and elongation. From the fact that the amount of carbonyl groups formed in the matrix PE with UV light exposure was closely related to both the amount of carbonyl groups and the amount of C—Cl bonds existing in the APP before the UV exposure, it was concluded that the combined action of carbonyl groups and C—Cl bonds in the sensitizer is important in the promotion of the photodegradation of the matrix polymer.

Notes: Electric wires coated with polyethylene insulation crosslinked by a chemical method (gel fraction = 80%) and a jacket of self-extinguishing resin were produced. The jacket was crosslinked by irradiation with γ rays or accelerated electrons. Flame retardant properties of the wire improved by γ-ray induced crosslinking up to ∼60% gel fraction in the jacket. Beyond this point, however, the flame resistance rapidly decreased with increasing gel fraction. The flame resistance was also improved by irradiation with electrons, but the extent of the improvement was strongly dependent on the energy of incident electrons. This fact was attributed to the difference in the distribution of energy dissipation, i.e., crosslinks formed in the jacket. By introducing a double layer structure to the jacket, in which the inner layer adjacent to the polyethylene insulation was crosslinked more densely than the outer layer, the wires were markedly improved in resistance to flame and heat deformation.

Notes: Vinyl-type monomers containing bromine and/or phosphorus were synthesized and used as flame retardants for ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer. The monomers were mixed with the base polymer, Sb2O3 as a synergist, radical initiator, and other additives, and polymerized in the matrix of the base polymer. The monomers act as an effective flame retardants when they form thermally stable polymers comparable to the base polymer. The efficiency was dependent on the amount of flame-retardant polymer formed in the finished compound.

Notes: Kinetic studies of cografting reactions of styrene (St) and ethyl acrylate (EA) onto preirradiated polyethylene (PE) have been investigated by means of bromine labeling and infrared spectroscopy. Kinetic data obtained from these methods, that is, the percent grafting, the number of graft chains, and growing rates, were obtained at temperatures of 0, 20, 40, and 50°C. The graft percent was virtually influenced by the degree of swelling. At 0°C, the mixing ratio of ethyl acrylate and styrene monomer before the beginning of the reaction was equal to the existence ratio in the graft chains after the reaction. Therefore, this reaction is considered to be diffusion-controlled. On the contrary, at 20 and 40°C, the existence ratio in graft chains after the reaction. Therefore, this reaction is considered to be diffusion-controlled. On the contrary, at 20 and 40°C, the existence ratio in graft chains agreed with the theoretical curve calculated from monomer reactivity ratio. The number of active graft chains for given times were 3∼5 × 10-7 mole/g PE and it decreased with temperature; 0 〉 20 〉 50°C. While the total number of graft chains is 5∼15 × 10-7 mole/g PE and it increased with temperature; 0 〈 20 〈 50°C. The growing rate were 1∼5 monomer/site/sec for 0°C, 2∼15 for 20°C.

Notes: The graft polymerization of styrene onto preirradiated poly(isobutylene oxide) (PIBO) with methanol and benzene was studied. The order of grafting yield and of the number-average molecular weight of graft chains decrease in the order; undiluted styrene 〉 styrene-methanol (1:1) solution 〉 styrene-benzene (1:1) solution. A kinetic treatment to calculate rate constants from the rate of grafting and the molecular weight of the graft chain was proposed. The propagation rate constant kp was 0.2-0.3 l./mole-sec and the termination rate constant kt was 1.0-16.0 l./mole-sec. The ratio kp/kt in this heterogeneous system was larger than that in homogeneous system by a factor of about 104-105.
