Description / Table of Contents: Individual behaviour of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in the presence of hypoxic water was measured in situ in the vertically stratified Bornholm Basin of the Baltic Sea. Considering all recaptured individuals, the use of hypoxic habitat was comparable to data derived by traditional survey data, but some G. morhua had migrated towards the centre of the c.100 m deep basin and spent about a third of their time at oxygen saturation 〈50%, possibly to forage on zoobenthos. Maximal residence time per visit in such hypoxic water was limited to a few hours, allowing for the digestion of consumed prey items in waters with sufficient dissolved oxygen.

Notes: In order to demonstrate the presence of air embolism during total hip replacement surgery six patients, chosen at random, were examined with an ultrasound probe placed over the right atrium. In five patients, the characteristic double cardiac sound coming from the ultrasound probe changed into an irregular rattling sound as the femoral cement started generating its maximum hardering heat. In two patients this change was also heard simultaneously with the insertion of the femoral prosthesis. In four patients in whom catheters were placed in the right atrium it was possible to aspirate a maximum of 3 ml air from the right atrium. During the cementation of acetabulum, no change in the signal, coming from the ultrasound probe, was registered. It is probable that air is formed in the venous system during the insertion and cementation of a femoral prosthesis. The resulting air embolism is presumed to be the cause of the massive, but generally very brief impairment of the central circulation and the lungs seen during a hip arthroplasty. In the case of patients undergoing anaesthesia with N20, the N20 should be removed before the cementation, it is also recommended that the right atrium be catheterised, in order to reduce the risk of this complication.

Notes: Various methods have been developed to confirm proper intubation of the trachea. This blind, randomised study evaluates some of these quantitatively and qualitatively. Forty patients had both their trachea and oesophagus intubated. A procedure that included auscultation of the upper abdomen and lungs was 100% reliable independent of which tube was ventilated. Auscultation of the lungs resulted in a wrong conclusion in 15% (6–30, 95% confidence limits) of the cases when the oesophagus was ventilated: the sounds were misinterpretated as normal breath sounds. Suction on the tubes with a 60-ml syringe was also a reliable test. Other methods assessed were observation for condensation of water vapor, and abnormal movements of the upper abdomen; these were unreliable.

Notes: Summary The present series includes 47 patients (35 females 12 males) with an average observation time of 8 months after percutaneous lumbar facet denervation by radiofrequency electrocoagulation. All patients had static and kinetic lumbar pain; 90% of them had pain radiating into the legs. None had clinical or radiologic (radiculography and/or CT scan) evidence of a lumbar disc herniation, and all had exhausted conservative therapy. All but one had provocation of their habitual pain on arthrography of the relevant intervertebral lumbar joints and/or on intraoperative stimulation prior to electrocoagulation. 22/47 of the patients had no immediate or late beneficial effect of the electrocoagulation. Eight of the remaining 25 patients had satisfactory relief of pain at follow-up. The failures included all patients with previous multiple lumbar operations except for three.

Notes: Summary Seven women and nine men, aged 27–59 years (mean 45), with lumbar pain and sciatica had epidural blocks once with 80mg of depo-medrol and lidocaine in individual doses. All had static and kinetic lumbar pain up to 16 years and all but four also pain radiating to the lower limbs. Radiculography was “negative” in all patients, but three exhibited minor neurological abnormalities. Five patients had had a lumbar hemilaminectomy previously. In case of segmental pain in the lower limbs the appropriate level was used, in all other patients injection was done in L3–4 interspace. By means of a visual analogous scale 10 patients (62%) stated relief of half the pain the following day. One month later only 7 patients (43%) stated relief of one third of the pain. Only one patient benefited ultimately (after 6 months). In the remainder complaints were unaffected by the epidural injection. These discouraging results are not compatible with other reports, and a planned double-blind randomized investigation was abandoned. For the present category of patients (long-lasting complaints, previous “disc” operations) we found the epidural steroid injection useless.

Notes: Abstract The pressure dependence of the multiphonon excitations in superfluid 4He has been studied, using neutron inelastic scattering. High-resolution measurements have been made at 0,5 K over a wavevector range 0.6〈Q〈2.2 Å−1, at various pressures between 0 and 20 bars. The experimental data are presented and existing theoretical calculations are discussed.

Description: The size of an individual organism is a key trait to characterize its physiology and feeding ecology. Size-based scaling laws may have a limited size range of validity or undergo a transition from one scaling exponent to another at some characteristic size. We collate and review data on size-based scaling laws for resource acquisition, mobility, sensory range, and progeny size for all pelagic marine life, from bacteria to whales. Further, we review and develop simple theoretical arguments for observed scaling laws and the characteristic sizes of a change or breakdown of power laws. We divide life in the ocean into seven major realms based on trophic strategy, physiology, and life history strategy. Such a categorization represents a move away from a taxonomically oriented description toward a trait-based description of life in the oceans. Finally, we discuss life forms that transgress the simple size-based rules and identify unanswered questions.

Description: Explaining variability in offspring vs. adult size among groups is a necessary step to determine the evolutionary and environmental constraints shaping variability in life history strategies. This is of particular interest for life in the ocean where a diversity of offspring development strategies is observed along with variability in physical and biological forcing factors in space and time. We compiled adult and offspring size for 407 pelagic marine species covering more than 17 orders of magnitude in body mass including Cephalopoda, Cnidaria, Crustaceans, Ctenophora, Elasmobranchii, Mammalia, Sagittoidea, and Teleost. We find marine life following one of two distinct strategies, with offspring size being either proportional to adult size (e.g., Crustaceans, Elasmobranchii, and Mammalia) or invariant with adult size (e.g., Cephalopoda, Cnidaria, Sagittoidea, Teleosts, and possibly Ctenophora). We discuss where these two strategies occur and how these patterns (along with the relative size of the offspring) may be shaped by physical and biological constraints in the organism's environment. This adaptive environment along with the evolutionary history of the different groups shape observed life history strategies and possible group-specific responses to changing environmental conditions (e.g., production and distribution).
