    Notes: Summary The potential of hydroxyalkyl methacrylate gel as a support for yeast cell immobilization by covalent attachment was investigated with respect to the length of spacer used and the manner of its activation. Saccharomyces paradoxus cells were immobilized successfully onto glutaraldehyde activated glycyl-, β-alanyl-and ε-aminocaproyl-derivatives of the above mentioned gel modified with hexamethylenediamine. Results suggest that covalent attachment via spacer is strongly influenced by cell surface characteristics.

    Notes: Summary In the Birch reduction of steroid compounds with a phenylbutadiene grouping, i.e., the ketal of 3-methoxy-Δ1, 3, 5(10), 8, 14-D-homoestrapentaen-17a-one (III), the corresponding ketone (IIIa), and 3-methoxy-Δ1, 3, 5(10), 8, 14-D-homoestrapentaen-17aβ-ol (VI), 1, 4 addition of the hydrogen takes place first, and is followed by reduction of the aromatic nucleus. In this way, 3-methoxy-Δ1, 3, 5(10), 8(14)-D-homoestratetraenone (XII), Δ4, 8(14)-19-nor-D-homoandrostadienedione (VIII), and Δ4, 8(14)-19-nor-D-homoandrostadien-17aβ-ol-3-one (IX) have been obtained.

The reduction of 3-methoxy-D-homoestra-1, 3, 5(10), 8-tetraen-17aβ-ol (IV) with alkali metals in the presence of ammonium chloride or alcohol gives, in addition to 8β, 9α-dihydro derivatives, the 8α, 9α and 8β, 9β-epimers, the structure of which has been shown partly by independent synthesis and partly on the basis of chemical reactions and NMR spectra. 2. Hydrolysis of the reduction products has given 19-nor-D-homotestosterone (III) and its 8α- and 9β, 10α-epimers (V) and (VI). The ketols (III) and (V) readily form hydroperoxides in air. 3. The reduction of the ethylene ketal of 3-methoxy-D-homoestra-1, 3, 5(10), 8-tetraen-17a-one (XIX) takes place stereodirectively and gives only 8β, 9α-dihydro derivatives.

    Notes: Summary Various routes for the synthesis of the methyl ether of d,l-estrone (XI) and of d,l-estrone itself (XIII) have been investigated. The best results were obtained by synthesis according to the route IV → V → VI → I → X → XI → XIII, when the yield of the methyl ether of d,l-estrone (XI) was 25% and that of d,l-estrone 13%, calculated on the basis of 6-methoxytetralone.

    Notes: Summary The complete synthesis of d,l-19-nortestosterone (I) and its 8-iso- and 9, 10-iso- stereoisomers, and also the synthesis of d,l-19-norandrosten-4-ene-3, 17-dione (VI) and its 9, 10-iso-stereoisomer (IX), has been carried out. The stereodirectivity of the simultaneous reduction of the Δ8(9) double bond and the aromatic ring conjugated with it by means of alkali metals and alcohol in liquid ammonia, both under Birch's conditions and Wilds and Nelson's conditions, depends on the nature of the substituent at C17; in the case of the 17-ketone (III) and the carbinol (VIII), considerable amounts of the 9β- isomers are formed. Compounds (I), (Ia), (Ib), (V), and (VI) possess anabolic activity, but to a smaller extent than the analogous compounds in the d,l-D-homo series.

    Notes: Summary The synthesis of racemates of the 2α-methyl, 4-methyl, 17α-methyl, and 2α, 17α-dimethyl derivatives of 19-nor-D-homotestosterone has been described. Biological tests have shown that the introduction of a CH3 group into positions 2α and 17α totally suppresses both androgenic and anabolic activity. The introduction of a CH3 group into position 4 leads to a divergence of the anabolic and androgenic effects.
