    Description: In order to determine the distribution patterns of phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic species that constitute the main food of the argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita), a study was made within a coastal spawning area on meso-scaled space (approximately 7 miles between stations). It was observed the predominacne of the copepod Oithona helgolandica and copepodites stages of other small-sized species, thus inferring the preponderance of nauplii stages which constitute the main food of early anchovy larvae. A high spatial heterogeneity was found in the distrtibution of both phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic communities. Phytoplankton showed a patchiness distribution both in horizontal and vertical directions. Diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophoirids showed their own distribution patterns with biomass nuclei centered at different stations. The spatial distribution of the components within each taxonomic group seems to be of the contagious-type distribution. The positive correlation (r= 0,64*)as observed between immature stages of copepods and coccolithophorids seems to indicate a trophic direction of these consumers, which is also supported by the finding of coccolithophorids in copepods pellets. The phytoplankton crop as measured by population census and chlorophyll a concentrations (0,0-0,91 mg/m3)indicates an area of a low productive capacity.

    Description: A strong interest in the southern Patagonian shelf has emerged in recent years, along with the increasing recognition of its high biological productivity. Knowledge of the pelagic food web structure that supports the richness of this system is still developing, but there are indications that mesozooplankton occupy a pivotal position, as consumers of smaller plankton and as vital prey for fish and squid. All plankton communities in the size 2μm-20mm, total and size-fractioned chlorophyll a (Chl a), nutrients and hydrology were surveyed simultaneously in October 2005 between 47°S-55°S. Picoplankton, nanoplankton and microplankton were taxonomically and functionally (autotrophs, heterotrophs) sorted within each size fraction. Plankton data and trophic relationships were examined through multivariate statistics. At that time fairly homogeneous thermal conditions prevailed over most of the shelf but weak saline horizontal gradients were evident. N/P ratios indicated no N or P limitation for phytoplankton. Surface concentrations of total Chl a were particularly high in the Grande Bay area at ca. 51°S near shore (28.6mgm-3) and at ca. 47°S on the shelf-break (7.7mgm-3). At both locations the contribution of the Chl a〉5μm fraction was remarkably high. The dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum (10.106cellsL-1) and the diatom Thalassiosira cf. oceanica (1.3.106cellsL-1) were respectively blooming at these sites. Otherwise 〈10μm plankton prevailed overall. Copepods largely dominated the 〉200μm fraction. Three mesozooplankton assemblages typical of the inner, middle, and outer shelf were identified. The inner and middle shelf assemblages overlapped slightly but were spatially separated from the outer shelf community. Adults and late copepodids of Drepanopus forcipatus were typical of the inner shelf assemblage. Middle-shelf species included the copepod Ctenocalanus vanus, the amphipod Themisto gaudichaudii and the chaetognath Sagitta tasmanica, while an assortment of taxa characterized the outer sector. Latitudinal patterns in mesozooplankton community composition were less noticeable than cross-shelf patterns. No clear distribution of phytoplankton and protozooplankton assemblages was apparent when the whole 〈200μm plankton community structure was considered. In contrast, communities in the optimal size food for copepods (〉10-200μm) were slightly different across shelf. Overall, spatial patterns of mesozooplankton and food availability matched weakly, suggesting a poor coupling between consumers and their prey communities at the time. Significant correlations were found particularly with large autotrophs and heterotrophs.

    Description: Spring blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense in the Argentine sea produce shellfish toxicity through the parallytic shellfish poison (PSP)accumulation. The trace PSP content in the mackerel Scomber japonicus liver was previously demonstrated in the Buenos Aires province coastal region (Carreto et al, 1993a),and a certain capability to accumulate the toxins was suggested.However, it was up to spring 1993 when a great number of PSP intoxicated mackerels where detected for the first time in a wideshelf area off the Buenos Aires province. This area, known as 'El Rincón' (39°00'-40°30'S), has become a growing importance mackerel fishing ground during the last few years. A high PSP concentration was determined in those mackerels, being the maximum located in the stomach content (2800 ugSTXeq/100g). It was predominantly composed of gelatinous zooplankton and a high concentration of A. tamarence cells indicating a probable way for the toxins transference. The mackerels mortality area corresponded with the A. tamarense maximum concentration in the Buenos Aires province coastal region, where a widespread water discoloration was produced.

    Description: During november 1992 an intense bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense accurred in coastal waters from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Toxicity testing of Mytilus edulis populations of the region revealed high levels of paralytic shellfish poison. In order to study the possible PSP accumulation in mackerel (Scomber japonicus), mouse bioassay(AOAC) was performed in livers from individuals captured during December 1992. Liver extracts were lethal to mice; the sumptoms observed were typical of those caused by paralytic shellfish toxins. Although PSPS concentration is below the established limit for human consumption, it suggests that mackerel can accumulate PSP toxins from its food. On the basis of stomach content analysis of sampled mackerel and the related literature, the occurrence of possible toxins vector organisms is discussed.

    Description: In August 1996 acoustic methods were employed to estimate mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance in the Buenos Aires, Argentina shelf area of "El Rincón" (4,287 mn2), located between 39°- 40° 30' S. Results showed a biomass estimate of 77,260 t. ASIMRAD EK-500 equipment operated with a 38 KHz split-beam transducer was used. Midwater fishing trawls were employed to identify echotraces and to collect mackerel samples.Trawls 4 and 5 were the most successful. Samples included only adult fish (310-470 mm Lt and ages ranging 2-11). Length and weight growth parameters and mortality rates were estimated. Analysis of the stomach contents revealed that mackerel was feeding exclusively on zooplankters over 2 mmlength. The analysis of the characteristics (dimensions and density) of the mackerel shoals allowed to detect two areas of concentration above and below 40°S latitude. The northern area was characterized by relatively small schools of medium density similar to those of the Mar del Plata area. In the southern zone, large schools of high density that account for almost 92 of the total biomass were found.Differences between both areas were also detected when plankton distribution was analyzed. Higher abundances of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense corresponded to the southern area. On the contrary, higher zooplankton biomass was detected northerly of 40°S. From an oceanographic standpoint, the presence of mackerel was associated to relatively higher salinity values. As a result of the different data analyzed it is suggested that,during this time of the year, the species shows a migratory pattern from the intermediate shelf to coastal areas.

Oblea, Oxyphysis, and Protoperidinium are discussed on accurt of their presence, up to the present unknown in the area. Comments on their geographical distributions, ecological requirements and morphological details are included in the work.

    Description: This study was based on four seasonal cruises during 1984 and 1985. It revealed a thermo-haline frontal system formed by the advection of the Coastal Water mass flowing in two branches, one running towards the coast and the other mid-shelf directed. The thermocline developed between late spring and autumn results in a low inorganic nutrient concentration in the upper layer. Nonetheless in winter, a vertical homogeneity and high nutrient concentration were observed. Phytoplankton development presented a typical temperate-seas annual cycle. In winter, reduced populations were dominated by diatoms. The highest biomass concentration in the cycle coincided with the spring blooming, to which Thalassio sira anguste-lineata,Alexandrium tamarense, Heterocapsa triquetra and Prorocentrum micans were associated. Summer concentration decreased sharply with dinoflagellates being dominant, and a minor increase followed in autumn owing to diatom populations. Usually diatom growth was linked to the frontal region. The quali-quantitative flora composition denote this gulf as a southern transitional area with a dominance of temperate-cold communities. A high dinoflagellate cysts richeness and encystment were detected in spring. Trophic relations in the microplankton community were identified, and a spatial coupling of predator-dinoflagellates and photosynthetic prey-dinoflagellates was noted. Consumption and grazing and prey selectivity indexes were also estimated.

    Description: Between September 1st and 6th a research cruise was carried out in the Buenos Aires shelf area of "El Rincon" 39°40'-41°30'S, Argentine Sea SW Atlantic. The total area studied was 2,527.8 nautical mile2. Knowledge of the commercial fleet location at the time of the survey allowed to intensify sampling in a 'miniarea' of 52,8 nautical mile2. The acoustic assessment of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) biomass was 49,511.9 t, 94 of which corresponded to this last area. Fish samples coming from fishing trawls included only adult individuals of 240-460 mm total length (TL) and ages ranging 2-11 years. The limit age was estimated at 13 years and natural and total mortality rates at 0.23 and 0.54, respectively. Oceanographic conditions were those typical of the winter season, characterized by the vertical homogeneity of the water column in temperature and salinity. The isotherms and isohalines distributed parallel to the 50 m isobath with values progressively decreasing from the coast towards the slope. Salinity values allowed to detect two hydrographic regimes: that of the San Matias Gulf 33.8-34.4 located to the West and covering more than half of the study area and the one of the Shelf Waters 33.5-33.79 occurring towards the East. A positive gradient in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in N-S sense and from the coast towards the shelf break. The highest densities of phytoplankton, with dominance of diatoms, were observed in the southern sector. Low concentrations of Alexandrium tamarense and Prorocentrum minimum, two potentially noxious dinoflagellates, were detected. The highest zooplankton biomass associated to the highest salinity values and salinity gradients, represented mostly by Calanoides cf. carinatus, was also detected in the southern sector. The western sector, influenced by the San Matias Gulf regime and characterized by high densities of both, phytoplankton and zooplankton, may constitute a potentially favourable feeding ground for chub mackerel.

    Description: This paper provides an overview of the research being carried out at the moment by a group of Argentinean scientists working on the subjects of marine biodiversity and oceanography. When the idea of the Census of Marine Life (CoML)was proposed following the Symposium held during the IAPSO-IABO conference in Mar del Plata in October 2001,there was a wide response from the marine scientific community. Information about current research projects, as well as plans for future work in the context of the CoML, were then obtained from about 70 scientists (Appendix I) belonging to 12 institutions located along the Argentinean coast (Appendix II, Figure 1). This has been used to illustrate what is currently being pursued in marine biodiversity in Argentina and which subjects are considered as priority for future research in the area. This paper is, thus, not an historical update of the knowledge of marine biodiversity, but it attempts to give an idea of the current situation and what is planned for the future. The development of an extensive database of what is known on marine biodiversity in the region is considered to be a necessity, but it constitutes a complete project on its own; as such it is included in the proposals for future work (see Future Work in this paper). It is emphasised thatthis synthesis is not exhaustive in the content of the topics being studied or in the number of researchers working in marine biodiversity in the country. It is, though, considered to be a representative sample of the knowledge in marine science in Argentina today. This is a starting point for the CoML project in South America and it is hoped that, as it develops, it will be improved by the active participation, advice and experience of many other scientists in the region.
