Notes: Abstract Homologous transfusions are mandatory in most surgical procedures for correcting craniofacial malformations in infancy. A program of preoperative and intraoperative auto-hemodonation was developed and carried out in eleven infants. Although homologous transfusion could have been avoided in only 7 patients, we think that further experiences and minor corrections of our program may improve these results.

Notes: Abstract Concentrations of myelin basic protein (MBP) in ventricular and lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 20 pediatric hydrocephalic patients were reviewed. Raised values were found to be particularly significant in children aged more than 1 year. Control measurements after shunt placement showed an important drop in the MBP concentration, which could therefore be considered a marker for correct functioning of the shunt. The dosage of MBP could play a role in assessing the activity of an hydrocephalic process. Preliminary data gained from monitoring of MBP in the lumbar CSF in posthemorrhagic neonatal hydrocephalus could yield further criteria for indication of a shunt operation.

(fig. 1C, 2C).

Description: Multidisciplinary investigations at Pagliare di Sassa (L’Aquila, central Italy) suggest that the local succession accumulated from the late Early to the early Middle Pleistocene in a lacustrine environment. In the upper part, clastic sediments are part of an alluvial fan prograding into the lake, grading to a braided fluvial system. The pollen record confirms that a significant glacial phase occurred just before the onset of the Jaramillo inversion. These data, coupled with evidence from the nearby but earlier Madonna della Strada sequence, allow reconstruction of part of the environmental evolution of L’Aquila basin before the Jaramillo Subchron. The mammal species of Pagliare di Sassa include Stephanorhinus hundsheimensis, mostly of open environments, already present at Madonna della Strada. The faunal turnover characterizing the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition is indicated by the appearances of taxa typical of the Italian early to middle Galerian faunas, such as Praemegaceros verticornis, together with Megaloceros savini. The occurrence of Mimomys savini together with Microtus ex gr. Microtus hintonigregaloides suggests that this assemblage is earlier than the Isernia La Pineta fauna. A flint implement and a fragmentary herbivore femur with impact scars probably linked to human activity give evidence of the human peopling of intramontane basins of the Apennine chain since the early Middle Pleistocene.

Description: Aims Combined magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of molecular and morpho-functional changes might prove highly valuable for the elucidation of pathological processes involved in the development of cardiac diseases. Our aim was to test a novel MRI reporter gene for in vivo assessment of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin/TCF pathway activation, an important regulator of post-ischaemic cardiac remodelling. Methods and results We designed and developed a chimeric construct encoding for both of iron-binding human ferritin heavy chain (hFTH) controlled by the β-catenin-responsive TCF/lymphoid-enhancer binding factor (Lef) promoter and constitutively expressed green fluorescent protein (GFP). It was carried by adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (rAAV9) vectors and delivered to the peri-infarct myocardium of rats subjected to coronary ligation ( n = 11). By 1.5 T MRI and a multiecho T2* gradient echo sequence, we detected iron accumulation only in the border zone of the transduced infarcted hearts. In the same cardiac area, post-mortem histological analysis confirmed the co-existence of iron accumulation and GFP. The iron signal was absent when rats ( n = 6) were chronically treated with SEN195 (10 mg/kg/day), a small-molecular inhibitor of β-catenin/TCF-dependent gene transcription. Canonical Wnt pathway inhibition attenuated the post-ischaemic remodelling process, as demonstrated by the significant preservation of cardiac function, the 42 ± 1% increase of peri-infarct arteriolar density and 43 ± 3% reduction in infarct scar size compared with untreated animals. Conclusions The TCF/Lef promoter-hFTH construct is a novel and reliable MRI reporter gene for in vivo detection of the canonical Wnt/β-catenin/TCF activation state in response to cardiac injury and therapeutic interventions.

Description: We report the results of a study on early Miocene to Pleistocene volcanic rocks cropping out west of the Karlıova Triple Junction in Eastern Anatolia (Elazığ, Tunceli, and Bingöl provinces). Here the Eurasia–Arabia convergence resulted in collision, marked by the Bitlis–Zagros suture (∼13 Ma), followed by activation of the dextral transform North Anatolian Fault (NAF). At ∼6 Ma the formation of the sinistral transform East Anatolian Fault (EAF) marked the separation of the Anatolian block, which became a kinematically independent plate. On the basis of petrographic, geochemical and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic characteristics, as well as new 40 Ar– 39 Ar age determinations, we distinguish three phases of activity: (1) early–middle Miocene (16·3–15·5 Ma) production of calc-alkaline basaltic trachyandesite to dacites in the Pertek and Mazgirt districts; (2) emplacement of late Miocene (11·4–11·0 Ma) transitional basalts in the Tunceli area; (3) emplacement of Plio-Pleistocene Na-alkali basalts in Karakoçan (4·1 Ma) and Elazığ (1·7 Ma). The oldest samples are characterized by large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment (e.g. Ba/Nb = 32–76) with high 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0·7052–0·7065) and low 143 Nd/ 144 Nd isotopic ratios (0·51246–0·51262). The late Miocene basalts display variable geochemical characteristics, including large variations in 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0·7039–0·7068) and LILE/HFSE (high field strength element) ratios (e.g. Ba/Nb = 13–36). The Plio-Pleistocene alkali basalts have higher LILE and HFSE contents and lower LILE/HFSE ratios (Ba/Nb = 8–21) compared with the two previous groups, low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr (0·7033–0·7038) and high 143 Nd/ 144 Nd (0·51270–0·51290), with compositions similar to those of oceanic intraplate magmas. Pb isotopes vary slightly: 206 Pb/ 204 Pb ranges from 18·66 to 19·11, 207 Pb/ 204 Pb from 15·64 to 15·72 and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb from 38·67 to 39·24, with the calc-alkaline early–middle Miocene rocks characterized by higher 207 Pb/ 204 Pb and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb at a given 206 Pb/ 204 Pb. The evolution of volcanic activity is strictly linked to the geodynamic scenario. The early–middle Miocene magmas, emplaced in a convergent setting, indicate derivation from mantle sources modified by subduction components, whereas the late Miocene Tunceli transitional basalts mark the change from compressional to strike-slip tectonics. During the development of the NAF and EAF, passive upwelling of the sub-slab mantle, favoured by the formation of small pull-apart basins, led to the onset of Na-alkali basaltic activity.
