    Notes: Abstract The dependence of interstellar extinction on distance in the direction of a dark cloud around the reflection nebula NGC 1333 is determined on the basis of photoelectric Vilnius photometry and photometric classification of 78 stars. Two dust clouds are noted at distances 160 and 220 pc. The first one with mean extinction of 0.4 mag is concluded to belong to the Taurus cloud complex and the second cloud with mean extinction of 1.8 mag belongs to the chain of dark clouds and other young objects which is almost perpendicular to the spiral arm but lies ∼80 pc below the galactic plane. The star BD +30°549 which illuminates the NGC 1333 nebula is at distance 212 pc from the Sun. No extinction increase behind the Perseus cloud is detected.

    Notes: Abstract The photometry of G and K subdwarfs in the Vilnius photometric system permits us to recognize them photometrically and to determine their metallicity, despite the presence of interstellar reddening. The weakening of the strong metallic lines in their spectra can also be used to estimate their metallicity.

    Notes: Abstract Photoelectric Vilnius photometry of the B-type stars HD 29 647 and HDE 283 809 in the direction of the Taurus molecular cloud indicates their brightness and energy distribution to be constant within 1–2%. The interstellar extinction law is determined for the star HDE 283 809 from the photometry data in the Vilnius andUBVRJHKL systems, which yield the ratioR=A V/EB-V=3.5 and grain sizes exceeding the average by approximately 10%. The interstellar extinction law for the two stars is found to be the same in the infrared, however, it is very different in the near ultraviolet. The new spectra of HDE 283 809 confirm the earlier classification and indicate an absence of emission in the hydrogen lines. The interstellar band at 443 nm is observed but its intensity is a half of what is expected forE B-V=1.61. The observed peculiarities of the energy distribution in the spectrum of HDE 283 809 apparently originate in interstellar or circumstellar dust, not in the star itself.

    Notes: Abstract The dependence of interstellar extinction on distance in the direction of the dark cloud south of Merope is determined using photoelectric photometry of 93 stars in the Vilnius photometric system. The cloud front edge is detected at 120–130 pc from the Sun and the distance of the Pleiades cluster is found to be 127 pc. Mean extinctionA V in the Merope cloud is of the order of 1.0 mag. There is no evidence of extinction at distances exceeding the Merope cloud distance. Variable extinction method yieldsR=A V/EB-V=3.6, while the maximum polarization wavelength method gives the value 3.4. Some Pleiades stars are suspected to be unresolved binaries.

    Description: The near-Earth asteroid belt is continuously replenished with material originally moving in Amor-class orbits. Here, the orbit of the dynamically interesting Amor-class asteroid 2012 XH 16 is analysed. This asteroid was discovered with the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) at the Mt Graham International Observatory as part of an ongoing asteroid survey focused on astrometry and photometry. The orbit of the asteroid was computed using 66 observations (57 obtained with VATT and 9 from the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory-Spacewatch II project) to give a  = 1.63 au, e  = 0.36, i  = 3 $_{.}^{\circ}$ 76. The absolute magnitude of the asteroid is 22.3 which translates into a diameter in the range 104–231 m, assuming the average albedos of S-type and C-type asteroids, respectively. We have used the current orbit to study the future dynamical evolution of the asteroid under the perturbations of the planets and the Moon, relativistic effects, and the Yarkovsky force. Asteroid 2012 XH 16 is locked close to the strong 1:2 mean motion resonance with the Earth. The object shows stable evolution and could survive in near-resonance for a relatively long period of time despite experiencing frequent close encounters with Mars. Moreover, results of our computations show that the asteroid 2012 XH 16 can survive in the Amor region at most for about 200–400 Myr. The evolution is highly chaotic with a characteristic Lyapunov time of 245 yr. Jupiter is the main perturber but the effects of Saturn, Mars and the Earth–Moon system are also important. In particular, secular resonances with Saturn are significant.
