    Notes: The effects of feeding guppy (Poecilia reticulata) fry a diet offered as either powder or flakes on their growth and survival were tested over a period of 8 weeks. The results show that the growth of both male and female fish was considerably enhanced when the diet was presented in the form of a finely ground powder compared with a flake form. Final average weights of fish given a diet containing the exact same ingredients (44.9% protein and 6.1% fat), from the same batch of raw materials in the powdered form were 280.0±12.1 mg compared with 114.6±19.9 mg for the diet given in the form of flakes. In a diet that had a higher fat level (45.1% protein and 10.6% fat), the difference in final weight attained was even more dramatic: 303.9±16.7 mg for the powder-fed fish compared with 92.6±12.5 mg for the flake-fed fish. The coefficient of variance in the fish fed a flake diet was significantly higher than that exhibited in the treatments fed the powder feed. The ability of the fish to consume the food in a rapid manner, preventing leaching of vital nutrients from the feed before being engulfed by the fish probably led to the better growth results exhibited by the fish given the powdered food.

    Notes: The effect of adding carotenoids from various sources to feed of juvenile freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus on pigmentation, growth and survival was examined under laboratory conditions. Juvenile crayfish were fed diets fortified with carotenoids at a level of 100 μg g−1 for a period of either 49 or 55 days. Carotenoid sources were: dried algal cells prepared from Dunaliella salina in which the main carotenoid is β-carotene; a synthetic carotenoid, astaxanthin (Carophyll Pink 8%, manufactured by Hoffman–La Roche) and alfalfa meal. Crayfish receiving feeds fortified with carotenoids exhibited better body colouration than those in the control group, which were fed a diet to which no carotenoids were added. Growth and survival of the crayfish were not affected by the addition of carotenoids to their diet.

    Notes: Abstract This study presents two experiments addressing growth and size variation in fingerling silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus. In the first experiment, fish close to mean population size were raised either in the presence or absence of five larger fish for 60 days. Mean specific growth rate (SGR) and increases in the coefficient of variation and skewness were lower in the presence of larger fish, indicating a negative effect of large fish on the growth of smaller ones. In the second experiment, fingerlings were graded into groups smaller and larger than the median size of the population and raised in size-sorted groups of 60 large or small fish and mixed groups of 30 fish of each size category, for 60 days. There was no difference in mean SGR among groups, nor between the mixed group ad the weighted mean of the small and large groups. Biomass gain was higher in the mixed groups than in the weighted small-and-large groups, probably due to a slightly lower survival in the groups comprised of large fish. The fact that the effect of large fingerlings on the growth of smaller ones was evident in the first, but not the second, experiment may be attributed to higher size disparity between large and small fingerlings in the first experiment.

    Notes: Abstract Chemoreception in the adults of the freshwater prawnMacrobrachium rosenbergii was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions, using behavioral assays. Tests were carried out on groups, as well as on individuals, all at their intermolt stages of the molt cycle, and prestarved for three to four days. Of 28 different substances tested, the amino acids taurine, glycine, arginine, and betaine, as well as trimethylamine, elicited a positive behavioral response in at least 50% of the test animals when applied at a threshold concentration of 10−5-10−8 M. A positive response comprises enhanced antennular flicking and food search motion. Of the various nucleotides tested for chemoattraction, only adenosine monophosphate elicited a response similar to that of the above amino acids, although at a concentration of 10−4 M, whereas adenosine diphosphate required a dosage of 10−1 M.
