Abstract The formation of hydroxamic acids from ethyl hippurate and other amino acid and peptide esters has been investigated colorimetrically in relation to pH and hydroxylamine concentration. Conditions favorable for the reaction are pH 9,5 and a 0,72m hydroxylamine solution at 37°. Generally, the yield is slightly diminished by the competing saponification reaction. However, with esters of amino acids and dipeptides tending to undergo cyclization reactions, the yield is considerably reduced.

Zusammenfassung Die Hydroxamsäurebildung aus Hippursäureäthylester und verschiedenen Aminosäure- und Peptidestern wurde in Abhängigkeit von pH und Hydroxylaminkonzentration kolorimetrisch untersucht. Günstige Reaktionsbedingungen sind pH 9,5 und 0,72m-NH2OH, 37°. Die Ausbeute wird durch die parallel gehende Verseifungsreaktion etwas gedrückt. Bei Aminosäure- und Dipeptidestern, die zu Ringschlußreaktionen neigen, sinkt die Hydroxamsäureausbeute erheblich ab.
