Notizen: Abstract The recent progress in three-dimensional boundary-layer stability and transition is reviewed. The material focuses on the crossflow instability that leads to transition on swept wings and rotating disks. Following a brief overview of instability mechanisms and the crossflow problem, a summary of the important findings of the 1990s is given.

Notizen: The nonlinear development of Goertler vortices over walls of variable curvature is studied. The parabolized disturbance equations governing the problem for small curvature, high Reynolds number, and order unity Goertler number are integrated numerically. Cases with concave, convex, and zero curvatures are analyzed. The "mushroom-shaped'' distributions of low-momentum fluid riding above high-momentum fluid that are subject to secondary instability are predicted. The results show significant stabilization of disturbances introduced from a concave into a convex region, where new sets of vortices are successively created with opposite rotation to the preceding set. The convex curvature tends to eliminate the inflection points from the spanwise and normal profiles of the streamwise velocity and, hence, suppresses the oscillatory secondary instability that leads to turbulence. Decay of Goertler vortices in a flat region is found to be less rapid than in a convex region.

Notizen: Abstract The current understanding of boundary-layer receptivity to external acoustic and vortical disturbances is reviewed. Recent advances in theoretical modeling, numerical simulations, and experiments are discussed. It is shown that aspects of the theory have been validated and that the mechanisms by which freestream disturbances provide the initial conditions for unstable waves are better understood. Challenges remain, however, particularly with respect to freestream turbulence.

Notizen: Abstract An analysis is presented for the linear stability of a liquid film, adjacent to a compressible viscous gas stream. The analysis is valid for all wavelengths and liquid Reynolds numbers. The pressure and shear perturbations exerted by the gas on the liquid are calculated, using a gas model which takes into account the gas viscosity, velocity profile, and heat transfer. The results show that an inviscid, uniform stream model for the gas is inadequate unless the disturbed boundary layer is very thin. Although the present linear analysis is in fairly good agreement with the experimental observations for subsonic flow, it does not predict the observed wavelengths and wave speeds for supersonic flow.

Notizen: Abstract The important recent progress in three-dimensional boundary-layer transition research is reviewed with emphasis on the crossflow instability that leads to transition on swept wings with a favorable pressure gradient. Following a brief overview of swept-wing instability mechanisms and the crossflow problem, a summary of the important findings of the 1990s is given. The discussion is presented from the experimental viewpoint, and where appropriate, relevant comparisons with CFD are drawn. The recent research conducted with distributed roughness is described in more detail in order to underscore the latest developments concerning nonlinear effects and transition control. Sommario.
