Beschreibung: This paper reports on the unsupervised analysis of seismic signals recorded by four stations situated on the Vesuvius area in Naples, Italy. The dataset under examination is composed of earthquakes and false events like thunders, quarry blasts and man-made undersea explosions. The goal is to use these specific data for comparing the performance of three projection methods that are well known to be able to exploit structures and organizes data, providing a framework for understanding and interpreting the relationships between data items, and suggesting simple descriptions of these relationships. The three unsupervised techniques under examination are: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is linear, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), which are nonlinear. The results show that, among the above techniques, SOM can better visualize the complex set of high-dimensional data allowing to discover their intrinsic clusters structure and eventually discriminate the earthquakes from the false events either natural (thunder) or artificial (quarry blast and undersea explosions).

Beschreibung: This paper compares three unsupervised projection methods: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is linear, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), which are both nonlinear. Performance comparison of the three methods is made on a set of seismic data recorded on Stromboli that includes three classes of signals: explosion-quakes, landslides, and microtremors. The unsupervised analysis of the signals is able to discover the nature of the seismic events. Our analysis shows that the SOM algorithm discriminates better than CCA and PCA on the data under examination.

Beschreibung: This paper reports on the unsupervised analysis of seismic signals recorded in Italy, respectively on the Vesuvius volcano, located in Naples, and on the Stromboli volcano, located North of Eastern Sicily. The Vesuvius dataset is composed of earthquakes and false events like thunders, man-made quarry and undersea explosions. The Stromboli dataset consists of explosion-quakes, landslides and volcanic microtremor signals. The aim of this paper is to apply on these datasets three projection methods, the linear Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the Self-Organizing Map (SOM), and the Curvilinear Component Analysis (CCA), in order to compare their performance. Since these algorithms are well known to be able to exploit structures and organize data providing a clear framework for understanding and interpreting their relationships, this work examines the category of structural information that they can provide on our specific sets. Moreover, the paper suggests a breakthrough in the application area of the SOM, used here for clustering different seismic signals. The results show that, among the three above techniques, SOM better visualizes the complex set of high-dimensional data discovering their intrinsic structure and eventually appropriately clustering the different signal typologies under examination, discriminating the explosionquakes from the landslides and microtremor recorded at the Stromboli volcano, and the earthquakes from natural (thunders) and artificial (quarry blasts and undersea explosions) events recorded at the Vesuvius volcano.

Beschreibung: Previous research works proved the existence of a synchronization between speech and holds in adults and in 9 year old children with a rich linguistic vocabulary and advanced language skills. When and how does this synchrony develop during child language acquisition? Could it be observed also in children younger than 9? The present work aims to answer the above questions reporting on the analysis of narrations produced by three different age groups of Italian children (9, 5 and 3 year olds). Measurements are provided on the amount of synchronization between speech pauses and holds in the three different groups, as a function of the duration of the narrations. The results show that, as far as the reported data concerns, in children, as in adults, holds and speech pauses are to a certain extent synchronized and play similar functions, suggesting that they may be considered as a multi-determined phenomenon exploited by the speaker under the guidance of a unified planning process to satisfy a communicative intention. In addition, considering the role that speech pauses play in communication, we speculate on the possibility that holds may serve to similar purposes supporting the hypothesis that gestures as speech are an expressive resource that can take on different functions depending on the communicative demand. While speech pauses are likely to play the role of signalling mental activation processes aimed at replacing the “old spoken content” of the communicative plan with a new one, holds may signal mental activation processes aimed at replacing the “old visible bodily action” with new ones reflecting the representational and/or propositional contribution of gestures to the new communicative plan.

Beschreibung: Human beings seem to be able to recognize emotions from speech very well and information communication technology aims to implement machines and agents that can do the same. However, to be able to automatically recognize affective states from speech signals, it is necessary to solve two main technological problems. The former concerns the identification of effective and efficient processing algorithms capable of capturing emotional acoustic features from speech sentences. The latter focuses on finding computational models able to classify, with an approximation as good as human listeners, a given set of emotional states. This paper will survey these topics and provide some insights for a holistic approach to the automatic analysis, recognition and synthesis of affective states.

Notizen: The growth and production of the annual floating-leaved water chestnut (Trapa natans) were studied during summer 1993 at three sites at Lago di Candia (Northern Italy). These sites were subjected to different levels of harvesting from 1986 to 1992. Site USD was the unharvested control site; site 30S was harvested in alternate years (1987, 1989 and 1991); site 30D was harvested every year from 1986 onwards (except 1989) and moreover was sown during 1990, 1991 and 1992 with 8, 4 and 4 seeds/m2, respectively. Despite differences in seed density in the sediment, reflecting different harvesting and sowing practices, neither the biomass of water chestnut nor the fruit production were statistically different in the three sites although the production of buds, flowers and fertilized ovaries was higher at site 30D. In this site, where the plant density was four times lower, water chestnut increased the number of rosettes per plant two to fourfold. This productivity increased the population's invasive capacity. In Lago di Candia, water chestnut grows to 3 m in depth and it competes successfully with hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) in the littoral zone.
