Abstract:
A general approach to the “exploding” [ n ]rotanes for n = 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 involving the oxidative cyclization of open‐chain dehydrooligomers of 1,1‐diethynylcyclopropane is described (see below). The X‐ray structure analyses for the hydrocarbons with n = 5, 6, 7, and 8 reveal strong electronic interactions between the cyclopropane and the acetylene units. All the macrocycles synthesized are of extremely high energy: when struck with a spatula or a pestle, they flare and turn into black soot. magnified image
