    Abstract: The impact of the wetland ecosystem on arid and semi-arid areas is much higher than that in humid areas. It plays a more significant role in regulating climate, conserving water sources, purifying water bodies, and protecting biodiversity. The West Liao River Basin is located in a moderately temperate, semi-arid, and continental monsoon climatesensitive area, with a fragile ecological environment. Climate warming and drought have gradually caused dry-flow of some river sections in the basin, reduction in the water area, shrinking of wetlands, degradation of vegetation ecological function, and decline of biodiversity. Ultimately, the effect of ecological barriers is significantly weakened. The research of the temporal and spatial evolution of landscape patterns and their relationship with human activities in arid and semi-arid regions is of great significance for the protection and restoration of wetland resources. Based on Landsat remote sensing images in 1985 and 2015, the temporal and spatial evolution of landscape patterns in four key wetland areas in the West Liao River Basin was studied by 3S technology and landscape ecology indexes. Results show that during the 30a years, the wetland resources area in the West Liao River Basin is drastically reduced. Wetland resources of the four study areas, the Dalinor, the Saihanwula, the Hongshan Reservoir, and the West Liao River Estuary, were decreased by 13.80%, 31.06%, 61.10%, and 66.03%, respectively. The reduced wetland resources in the Dalinor and the Saihanwula were mainly converted into grassland, while those of the Hongshan Reservoir and the West Liao River Estuary were mostly converted into farmland. The diversity and evenness indexes of landscape in the Hongshan Reservoir and the West Liao River Estuary are gradually decreasing. The diversity and evenness indexes of the Dalinor and the Saihanwula are not significantly changed but are slightly disturbed by human activities. Changes in the landscape pattern index highlight the decrease in the water area, the increase in the area of dry and paddy fields, and the improvement of sandy land. All these further reflect that insufficient water resources supplementation and increasing human disturbance have a profound impact on the landscape pattern, which has also become the main driving force for the evolution of the landscape pattern in the West Liao River Basin.

    Abstract: Optoelectronic synapses are considered to be important cornerstones in the construction of neuromorphic computing systems because of their low power consumption, high operating speeds, and high scalability. In this work, we demonstrate an optoelectronic synaptic device based on a ZnO/HfOx heterojunction in which optical potentiation/electrical depression behaviors and nonvolatile high current state can be implemented. The heterojunction device exhibits conductance evolution with high linearity. The excellent optoelectronic memristive behavior of the device can be attributed to the interface barrier between ZnO and HfOx, which hinders the recombination of photo-excited electron–hole pairs to increase the carrier lifetime, and realizes the nonvolatile high current state. More importantly, the artificial vision system based on optoelectronic synaptic devices can achieved a high recognition accuracy of 96.1%. Our work provides a feasible pathway toward the development of optoelectronic synaptic devices for use in high-performance neuromorphic vision systems.

    Abstract: The aboveground biomass (AGB) of a forest is an important indicator of the forest’s terrestrial carbon storage and its relation to climate change. Due to the advantage of extensive spatial coverage and low cost, coarse-resolution remote sensing data is the main data source for wall-to-wall mapping of forest AGB at the regional scale. Despite this, improving the accuracy and efficiency of forest AGB estimation is a major challenge. In this study, two optical imageries, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 500 m imagery and Fengyun-3C Visible and Infrared Radiometer (FY-3C VIRR) 1000 m imagery, were used and compared for forest AGB estimation in Yunnan Province, southwest China. One parametric approach, multiple linear regression (MLR), and two nonparametric approaches, k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest (RF), were applied for the two imagery datasets, respectively. We evaluated the performance of the combination of remote sensing data and modeling approaches by comparing the accuracies and also explored the potential of FY-3C imagery data in forest AGB estimation at the regional scale as it was used for this purpose for the first time. We found that the machine learning models KNN and RF provided better results than MLR. From the three approaches for both MODIS and FY-3C imagery, RF performed best with R2 values of 0.84 and 0.81 and RMSE of 23.18 and 23.43, respectively. Estimation of forest AGB based on MODIS was marginally better than the estimation based on FY-3C. FY-3C imagery could therefore be an additional optical remote sensing data source of coarse spatial resolution, comparable to MODIS data which has been widely used for regional forest AGB estimation. Indices related to forest canopy moisture levels from both types of imagery were sensitive to forest AGB. The RF model and MODIS imagery were then applied to map the spatial variation of forest AGB of Yunnan Province. As a result of our study, we determined that Yunnan Province has a total forest AGB of 2123.22 Mt, with a mean value of 58.05 t/ha for forestland in 2016.

    Abstract: The atmosphere has substantial effects on optical remote sensing imagery of the Earth’s surface from space. These effects come through the functioning of atmospheric particles on the radiometric transfer from the Earth’s surface through the atmosphere to the sensor in space. Precipitable water vapor (PWV), CO2, ozone, and aerosol in the atmosphere are very important among the particles through their functioning. This study presented an algorithm to retrieve total PWV from the Chinese second-generation polar-orbiting meteorological satellite FengYun 3D Medium Resolution Spectral Imager 2 (FY-3D MERSI-2) data, which have three near-infrared (NIR) water vapor absorbing channels, i.e., channel 16, 17, and 18. The algorithm was improved from the radiance ratio technique initially developed for Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. MODTRAN 5 was used to simulate the process of radiant transfer from the ground surfaces to the sensor at various atmospheric conditions for estimation of the coefficients of ratio technique, which was achieved through statistical regression analysis between the simulated radiance and transmittance values for FY-3D MERSI-2 NIR channels. The algorithm was then constructed as a linear combination of the three-water vapor absorbing channels of FY-3D MERSI-2. Measurements from two ground-based reference datasets were used to validate the algorithm: the sun photometer measurements of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and the microwave radiometer measurements of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARMP). The validation results showed that the algorithm performs very well when compared with the ground-based reference datasets. The estimated PWV values come with root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.28 g/cm2 for the ARMP and 0.26 g/cm2 for the AERONET datasets, with bias of 0.072 g/cm2 and 0.096 g/cm2 for the two reference datasets, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm revealed a better consistency with ground-based reference datasets. Thus, the proposed algorithm could be used as an alternative to retrieve PWV from FY-3D MERSI-2 data for various remote sensing applications such as agricultural monitoring, climate change, hydrologic cycle, and so on at various regional and global scales.

    Abstract: Aberrant HOXA9 expression is a hallmark of most aggressive acute leukemias, notably those with KMT2A (MLL) gene rearrangements. HOXA9 overexpression not only predicts poor diagnosis and outcome but also plays a critical role in leukemia transformation and maintenance. However, our current understanding of HOXA9 regulation in leukemia is limited, hindering development of therapeutic strategies. Here, we generated the HOXA9-mCherry knock-in reporter cell lines to dissect HOXA9 regulation. By utilizing the reporter and CRISPR/Cas9 screens, we identified transcription factors controlling HOXA9 expression, including a novel regulator, USF2, whose depletion significantly down-regulated HOXA9 expression and impaired MLLr leukemia cell proliferation. Ectopic expression of Hoxa9 rescued impaired leukemia cell proliferation upon USF2 loss. Cut and Run analysis revealed the direct occupancy of USF2 at HOXA9 promoter in MLLr leukemia cells. Collectively, the HOXA9 reporter facilitated the functional interrogation of the HOXA9 regulome and has advanced our understanding of the molecular regulation network in HOXA9 -driven leukemia.

    Abstract: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by low platelet count which can cause fatal hemorrhage. ITP patients with antiplatelet glycoprotein (GP) Ib-IX autoantibodies appear refractory to conventional treatments, and the mechanism remains elusive. Here we show that the platelets undergo apoptosis in ITP patients with anti-GPIbα autoantibodies. Consistent with these findings, the anti-GPIbα monoclonal antibodies AN51 and SZ2 induce platelet apoptosis in vitro. We demonstrate that anti-GPIbα antibody binding activates Akt, which elicits platelet apoptosis through activation of phosphodiesterase (PDE3A) and PDE3A-mediated PKA inhibition. Genetic ablation or chemical inhibition of Akt or blocking of Akt signaling abolishes anti-GPIbα antibody-induced platelet apoptosis. We further demonstrate that the antibody-bound platelets are removed in vivo through an apoptosis-dependent manner. Phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure on apoptotic platelets results in phagocytosis of platelets by macrophages in the liver. Notably, inhibition or genetic ablation of Akt or Akt-regulated apoptotic signaling or blockage of PS exposure protects the platelets from clearance. Therefore, our findings reveal pathogenic mechanisms of ITP with anti-GPIbα autoantibodies and, more importantly, suggest therapeutic strategies for thrombocytopenia caused by autoantibodies or other pathogenic factors.
