    Abstract: The reproductive biology of Toxabramis swinhonis , one of the most abundant bycatch species in freshwater fishery in China, was first reported based on 783 specimens collected in Biandantang Lake, central China from October 2016 to September 2017. The overall sex ratio (female/male) was 1.03:1, not significantly different from the expected value 1:1. Nevertheless, sex ratio varied with seasons: 1.32:1 in the early stage of the spawning season (March–April), while 0.46:1 in the later stage (July–August). The monthly succession of the average gonadosomatic index (GSI) and percentages of mature individuals co-indicated that T. swinhonis was a spring-summer (March–August) spawner. Further, the bimodal distribution of the size of eggs from one gravid ovary and histological analysis of mature gonads suggested that T. swinhonis was a multiple spawner with indeterminate fecundity and high degree of spawning asynchronicity. The sizes and ages at first maturity for females and males were 84.47 and 81.86 mm, and 1.62 and 1.56 yr, respectively. The batch fecundity ( F B ) of this species varied in a wide range from 2006 to 73592 eggs per fish with a mean value of 26487.15 ± 2675.61 (S.E.) eggs and increased with the increasing of the gonad weight ( W G ), eviscerated weight ( W E ), total length ( L T ) and age ( A ). Overall, T . swinhonis in Biandantang (BDT) Lake is characterized by high fecundity and prolonged spawning season, resulting in easy population explosion. Thus, to remove T . swinhonis moderately or release predator fish discreetly to control its population is proposed considering its reproductive characteristics.

    Abstract: The family of tripartite motif (TRIM) proteins, which includes 80 known TRIM protein genes in humans, play a key role in cellular processes. [1] TRIM59, a member of the TRIM family of proteins, has been reported to be involved in the carcinogenesis of multiple types of tumors. However, the prognostic value of TRIM59 in the survival of tumor patients remains controversial. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to assess the prognostic significance of TRIM59 in cancer patients. Materials and methods: PubMed, Embase, VIP, CNKI and Wanfang Data were searched for eligible reports published before September 30, 2018. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were adopted to estimate the association between TRIM59 and overall survival (OS). Results: Six studies with 1584 patients were included to assess the effect. The results showed that high levels of TRIM59 were significantly associated with poor OS in cancer patients (HR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.24–1.66, P   〈  .001), indicating that higher TRIM59 expression could be an independent prognostic factor for poor survival in cancer patients. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggests that higher TRIM59 expression predicts poor prognosis in cancer patients, and it may therefore serve as a promising prognostic factor.

    Abstract: The necessity of the inferior pulmonary ligament (IPL) dissection after an upper lobectomy remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate whether this accessional procedure could reduce the postoperative complications and improve outcomes. Methods PubMed, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane Library, CBM, and CNKI databases were searched for the relevant studies which compared the dissection with preservation of IPL during the upper lobectomy. The Review Manager 5.3 software was used for this meta-analysis. Results Three RCTs and five CCTs were included in this meta-analysis. These studies contained a total of 610 patients, in which 315 patients received a pulmonary ligament dissection (group D) after the upper lobectomy, while the other 295 patients preserved the pulmonary ligament (group P). No significant difference was demonstrated between the group D and group P in terms of drainage time after surgery (MD 0.14, 95%CI − 0.05 to 0.33, P = 0.15), rate of postoperative dead space (OR 1.33, 95%CI 0.72 to 2.46, P = 0.36), rate of postoperative complications (OR 1.20, 95%CI 0.66 to 2.19, P = 0.56). However, the pooled comparison revealed a greater change of the right main bronchial angle (MD 5.00, 95%CI 1.68 to 8.33, P = 0.003) in group D compared with group P, indicated that the dissection of IPL may lead to a greater distortion of bronchus. Conclusions This meta-analysis confirmed that the dissection of IPL do not effectively reduce the postoperative complications and improve the prognosis. Therefore, it is not necessary to dissect the IPL after an upper lobectomy.

    Abstract: A multitude of sequencing-based and microscopy technologies provide the means to unravel the relationship between the three-dimensional organization of genomes and key regulatory processes of genome function. Here, we develop a multimodal data integration approach to produce populations of single-cell genome structures that are highly predictive for nuclear locations of genes and nuclear bodies, local chromatin compaction and spatial segregation of functionally related chromatin. We demonstrate that multimodal data integration can compensate for systematic errors in some of the data and can greatly increase accuracy and coverage of genome structure models. We also show that alternative combinations of different orthogonal data sources can converge to models with similar predictive power. Moreover, our study reveals the key contributions of low-frequency (‘rare’) interchromosomal contacts to accurately predicting the global nuclear architecture, including the positioning of genes and chromosomes. Overall, our results highlight the benefits of multimodal data integration for genome structure analysis, available through the Integrative Genome Modeling software package.

    Abstract: Salt stress is one of the most serious limiting factors in worldwide agricultural production, resulting in huge annual yield loss. Since 1995, melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine)—an ancient multi-functional molecule in eukaryotes and prokaryotes—has been extensively validated as a regulator of plant growth and development, as well as various stress responses, especially its crucial role in plant salt tolerance. Salt stress and exogenous melatonin lead to an increase in endogenous melatonin levels, partly via the phyto-melatonin receptor CAND2/PMTR1. Melatonin plays important roles, as a free radical scavenger and antioxidant, in the improvement of antioxidant systems under salt stress. These functions improve photosynthesis, ion homeostasis, and activate a series of downstream signals, such as hormones, nitric oxide (NO) and polyamine metabolism. Melatonin also regulates gene expression responses to salt stress. In this study, we review recent literature and summarize the regulatory roles and signaling networks involving melatonin in response to salt stress in plants. We also discuss genes and gene families involved in the melatonin-mediated salt stress tolerance.

    Abstract: This study fabricated flexible radar-absorbing knitted compound materials by weft knitting and blending ferromagnetic nickel micron-fibers and cotton fiber into structures with a concave–convex surface, including rhombic, mat, wavy, and leno stitches. The electromagnetic wave-absorbing capability and mechanical properties of the flexible radar-absorbing knitted compound materials were evaluated. The results showed that the rhombic, mat, and wavy stitches displayed high mechanical properties with high bursting strength and there were no significant differences among them. The rhombic stitch flexible radar-absorbing knitted compound material with a ferromagnetic nickel micron-fiber content of 14% had a maximum bandwidth of 13 GHz and achieved a minimum reflectance of −20 dB at 7 GHz, which was 150% that of mat fabric, and 200% that of wavy fabric and leno fabric. This was ascribed to the fact that the concave–convex surface with regular diamond-shaped block improved the dispersion of the electromagnetic wave, weakened the wave strength, and increased the interference. Therefore, the rhombic stitch flexible radar-absorbing knitted compound material was the most suitable for flexible radar-absorbing material in this study. The development of flexible radar-absorbing materials, by combining aerospace technology, military technology and textile technology, is important for the application in stealth of aircraft and weapons.

    Abstract: Grain development, as a vital process in the crop’s life cycle, is crucial for determining crop quality and yield. However, the molecular basis and regulatory network of barley grain development is not well understood at present. Here, we investigated the transcriptional dynamics of barley grain development through RNA sequencing at four developmental phases, including early prestorage phase (3 days post anthesis (DPA)), late prestorage or transition phase (8 DPA), early storage phase (13 DPA), and levels off stages (18 DPA). Transcriptome profiling found that pronounced shifts occurred in the abundance of transcripts involved in both primary and secondary metabolism during grain development. The transcripts’ activity was decreased during maturation while the largest divergence was observed between the transitions from prestorage phase to storage phase, which coincided with the physiological changes. Furthermore, the transcription factors, hormone signal transduction-related as well as sugar-metabolism-related genes, were found to play a crucial role in barley grain development. Finally, 4771 RNA editing events were identified in these four development stages, and most of the RNA editing genes were preferentially expressed at the prestore stage rather than in the store stage, which was significantly enriched in “essential” genes and plant hormone signal transduction pathway. These results suggested that RNA editing might act as a ‘regulator’ to control grain development. This study systematically dissected the gene expression atlas of barley grain development through transcriptome analysis, which not only provided the potential targets for further functional studies, but also provided insights into the dynamics of gene regulation underlying grain development in barley and beyond.
