Abstract: The relative age effect (RAE) theory is based on the premise that athletes born in the first months of the calendar year have a significant probability of a higher level of physiological, morphological and psychological abilities compared to later-born athletes. The aim of our study was to verify the influence of the RAE on adult ice hockey players, specifically Ice Hockey World Championships’ (IHWC) participants in the years 2015−2017 (n = 1,200). Based on the chi-squared (χ 2 ) analysis, the influence of the RAE during the 2015−2017 period could not be rejected for all observed players (χ 2 = 54.6, p 〈 0.01, w = 0.21) or for all the players for particular years (2015, 2016, and 2017; p 〈 0.01). During the monitored period (2015−2017), the RAE could not be rejected for any player’s position (forward, defender, or goaltender). Based on the effect size analysis (Cohen’s w), the strongest RAE was observed among goaltenders (w = 0.31), then forwards (w = 0.24) and finally defenders (w = 0.15). The assessment of player’s positions in particular years showed statistical significance for goaltenders only in 2015 (χ 2 = 11.3, p 〈 0.05). With regard to forwards, significance was confirmed for 2015 (χ 2 = 8.5, p 〈 0.05), 2016 (χ 2 = 15.2, p 〈 0.01) and 2017 (χ 2 = 14.3, p 〈 0.01). Therefore, the presence of the RAE could not be rejected for all these cases. The results of the research show that members of national teams in the years 2015−2017 were players who were chronologically older, which is consistent with the results of other authors addressing the RAE.

Abstract: The aim of this study, based on the reasearch data analysis, was find out the differences in the level of 13 chosen game characteristics of the winners and defeated junior finalists (n=4) and also to verify whether there are significant differences between the junior and adult players´ results at Roland Garros 2017. The research data were obtained from the recording of each match by the observation method using the Dartfish 9.0 software. We found out that differences between winning and defeated players were insignificant in this case. When comparing the level of game characteristics of juniors and adult players, it was found that there were significant differences in the importance of return points won and the breakpoints won.

Abstract: Character of modern tennis game in the last decade has become significantly more dynamic, fast and powerful, which brings high strain to joint and muscular system. The aim of this research was to establish strength level of external and internal shoulder rotators, and to compare the competitive tennis players group of boys (TEN, n=10, aged 12-14 years) and boys who did not perform any sport activity at competitive level (CS, n=10, aged 12-14 years) as well as to assess lateral differences in both groups. Using isokinetic dynamometry method (Humac Norm CSMI Stoughton, MA, USA), we tested strength level of external and internal shoulder rotators (180°/s, 300°/s). The TEN and CS group are comparable from the aspects of age, body height and body weight. Comparison of isokinetic strength values in TEN and CS groups proved significantly higher strength level of external and internal rotators in both (dominant and non-dominant) extremities for the TEN group. The lateral difference assessment proved the insignificant difference in external and significant difference in internal rotators in the TEN group, and the insignificant difference in both the external and internal rotators in the CS group. A lower strength level was found in the internal rotators in comparison with the external rotators in both groups (for both the dominant and non-dominant extremity), whereas in the TEN group lower differences between the external and internal rotators of the dominant extremity were proved. Although researches on adult highly skilled tennis players refer to a higher strength level of the upper extremity internal rotators, this fact has not been pronounced in the TEN group. An ideal external/internal rotators̕ ratio in adult players is considered within the interval of 66-75%. Significantly higher values obtained in the TEN group might be attributed to lower age and also lower performance level. It can be said that the level of isokinetic strength in the TEN the group is significantly higher than in the CS group, due to the influence of long-term game and training load.

Abstract: The issues of the significance of strength capabilities in sport and tennis are dealt with by many authors, in tennis, the strength of the playing arm primarily manifests in the speed of strokes, serve and locomotion movement. The goal of this paper is analysis of basic anthropometric and strength levels of male and female players’, comparisons and evaluation of inter-gender differences of anthropometric and strength characteristic. The research sample consists of Czech junior male tennis players (n = 221) and female players (n = 193) in the ages between 11.0 and 12.9 years. The data for this research were gathered during 2000-2010 period by regular testing using a test battery TENDIAG 1. Analysis of acquired data shows normal distribution characteristics. Values of measured anthropometric and strength levels statistic characteristic variables in the set of male tennis players (n = 221, body height: H = 155.10 ± 7.62, body weight: W = 43.50 ± 6.68, strength of playing hand: SH = 25.14 ± 4.59, relative strength of playing hand: RS = 0.58 ± 0.09) and female tennis players (n = 193, body height: H = 154.60 ± 6.94, body weight: W = 43.49 ± 7.71, maximum strength of playing hand: SH = 23.08 ± 4.61, relative strength of playing hand RS = 0.53 ± 0.09). Inter-gender differences between male and female tennis players were assessed using Cohen’s d values, substantively significant differences in mean values between male and female players files were detected only in the relative strength of gaming hand (d = 0.56, mean effect) and maximum strength level of game hand (d = 0.45, low effect). Size of effect was significant in the sample tennis players demonstrated between H and W (r = 0.71, r2  = 0.50; mean effect), among H and MS (r = 0.59, r 2  = 0.35; mean effect) and between MS and W (r = 0.59, r 2  = 0.35, mean effect). In a group of female tennis players has been demonstrated size of effect relation between H and W (r = 0.75, r 2  = 0.56; mean effect), among W and MS (r = 0.64, r 2  = 0.41, mean effect) and also between the maximum and the relative strength (r = 0.58, r 2  = 0.34; mean effect).

Abstract: When players practice batting against a pitching machine, there are some visual constraints that can affect the movement behaviour of the batter due to the absence of visual information sources that are available in competition performance (pitcher motion). This study sought to compare the timing of softball swing phases whilst batting against a pitcher and a pitching machine. Semi-experienced batters were recorded using a high-speed camera (200 fps) hitting balls (same pitch type) when batting against a pitcher and a pitching machine. Results showed significant differences in specific phases of swing timing under both conditions and each player was affected individually, mostly in the movement initiation (heel of the front leg) and duration of leg on – forward swing initiation. Practice task constraints that removed information sources were shown to have affected batters in specific phases of their swing. Therefore, pitching machines should be used wisely, and coaches should be aware of issues of how the use of pitching machines can affect the softball swing, even with lower level softball players. Furthermore, analysing participants as a group, as opposed to assessing individual differences within the group, can lead to inaccurate results and interpretations individual player’s motor responses and behaviour can be affected in different ways.

Abstract: Monitoring the level of individual factors or performance predispositions is an essential part of athlete´s training process. The article discusses the results of the diagnostic performance predispositions research of the selected group of tennis players. In the research, we first made a selection of players according to the criterion of the frequency of participation in testing and the other criterion was the performance level, ranking, they reached. In the next phase, we analyzed the individual test results of the players in the long-term perspective. The final step was to assess the relationship between age, the results of the test battery and game performance. Due to the small number of measurements and the complexity of sport performance in tennis we did not expect very tight dependence (correlation) of individual variables. We came to the conclusion that by all observed players a high level of motor performance predisposition were recorded which corresponds with their high performance in tennis and ranking, although statistical dependence was not proven.
