Abstract: Background: Strontium (Sr) enriched biomaterials have been used to improve bone regeneration in vivo. However, most studies provide only two experimental groups. The aim of our study was to compare eleven different bone sample groups from osteoporotic and healthy rabbits’ femoral neck, as it is the most frequent osteoporotic fracture in humans. Methods: Osteoporotic bone defects were filled with hydroxyapatite 30% (HA) and tricalcium phosphate 70% (TCP), 5% Sr-enriched HA30/TCP70, HA70/TCP30, or Sr-HA70/TCP30 granules and were compared with intact leg, sham surgery and healthy non-operated bone. Expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG), nuclear factor kappa beta 105 (NFkB-105), osteocalcin (OC), bone morphogenetic protein 2/4 (BMP-2/4), collagen I (Col-1α), matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2), interleukin 1 (IL-1) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) was analyzed by histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry. Results: Our study showed that Sr-HA70/TCP30 induced higher expression of all above-mentioned factors compared to intact leg and even higher expression of OC, MMP-2 and NFkB-105 compared to Sr-HA30/TCP70. HA70/TCP30 induced higher level of NFkB-105 and IL-1 compared to HA30/TCP70. Conclusion: Sr-enriched biomaterials improved bone regeneration at molecular level in severe osteoporosis and induced activity of the factors was higher than after pure ceramic, sham or even healthy rabbits.

Abstract: Variety of different bone substitutive materials are synthetized to improve bone healing potentials in pathological bone conditions. Physiologically active molecules within biomaterials, can initiate expression level of biomarkers, regulating bone remodeling. Aim of our study was to analyze bone healing process in bone defects followed by implantation with 5% strontium substituted hydroxyapatite (HAP) /tricalcium phosphate (TCP) 70/30 granules (group A) or HAP/TCP biphasic ceramic granules without strontium substitution (group B), or sham surgery affected bone (group C) in osteoporotic rabbits’ femur. Tissue samples from contralateral intact left leg were used for evaluation of systemic effects after surgery. Changes of bone volume were measured and appearance of OPG, NFkB-105, OC, COL-1, BMP-2/4, MMP-2, TIMP-2, IL-1 and IL-10-positive osteocytes in osteoporotic rabbits’ bone defect were evaluated. No statistical difference between groups of trabecular bone volume was detected. All analyzed markers showed higher appearance of positive osteocytes in groups A and B with comparison to control left leg (p 〈 0.05). Only NFkB105-positive cells showed important difference between sham surgery affected leg and control one (p=0.034). Numerous OPG-positive cells appeared in group A, while moderate number of them was found in groups B and C (p=0.025; p=0.027). Numerous to abundant OC-positive osteocytes were detected in group A, while moderate in group C (p=0.034). Statistical difference of rest biomarkers between groups was not detected. We concluded that implantation of biomaterials in osteoporotic bone improves local bone regenerative properties. However, the notable increase of OPG-containing cells proves the increase of osteoclastogenesis suppression and gives the evidence for renew of bone functionality.

Abstract: Creativity is an important component of the economy for modern cities, and necessary condition for it is the qualitative understanding of the economic theory science. In the global competition, it plays an important role for the economic growth dynamics, which is directly related to human resource role in the modern economy. The competitiveness of the territories depends on their attractiveness to economically active individuals and the opportunities they provide with economic growth. When considering the creative and cultural industries as potential economic development factors in the urban economy, culture can be considered as a new stage in urban development based on quality of life, creativity, which provide a level of degree for balance and determine the stability of the growth potential. The development of supporting urban infrastructure is identified as one of the drivers for expansion of the cultural and recreational domains both for the political and economic development. They reflect the specific characteristics of each city, the competitiveness versus attractiveness potential, and demonstrate the potential shift from the environment for production to a potentially new consumer environment with a higher “symbolic value”. The creative industries today can serve as an urban development domain tool, creating a modern approach to economic activity in various sectors of the economy. The authors draw attention to the cluster link between creative and cultural industries in urban planning. The authors propose a methodology for assessing revenues and costs, as well as recommendations for the work of cultural organisations and institutions involved in creating a creative urban environment. The article presents data and modelling results of the economic impact calculations for two imagined cities in order to theoretically approbate the methodology, which would help assess the socio-economic effect of the development of certain clusters. The aim of the research is to identify the impact of culture and creativity on the economy of city. The calculated information for decision makers would help formulate recommendations, evaluate potential developments of the urban environment, assist in planning and networking in urban agglomerations, based on clusters of creative and cultural industries, as the post-industrial city needs to make changes in order to achieve economic growth. The development of urban cluster of creative and cultural industries has a certain multiplicative effect, i.e., impact on the development of other types of economic activity.

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Peripheral artery disease is one of the most common vascular pathologies. There is an ongoing debate among specialists on whether open or endovascular revascularization is preferred in cases of complex superficial femoral artery (SFA) lesions. The purpose of this study was to assess patency results of a relatively new transvenous endovascular bypass device. This could add to existing evidence and aid in comparison between open and endovascular bypass. Materials and Methods: Patients with complex TASC-C and D SFA lesions who had indications for revascularization were identified. Prospective analysis of stent graft patency from 54 transvenous femoropopliteal bypass procedures was performed. Patency was assessed by Duplex ultrasound every six months. Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed to assess primary, primary-assisted, and secondary patency of transvenous bypass. Results: Following endovascular transvenous femoropopliteal bypass, 3-year graft primary, primary-assisted, and secondary patency was 43.8%, 66.3%, and 73.9%, respectively. Conclusions: Transvenous endovascular femoropopliteal bypass is a viable option for selected patients who lack adequate saphenous vein or have comorbidities that increase the risk of open femoropopliteal bypass. Strict post-operative follow-up is necessary to improve patency rates.

Abstract: An increasing number of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms are treated using endovascular rather than open surgical techniques. The Vascular Surgery Center, P. Stradins Clinical University Hospital, has the largest worldwide experience using a new type of endoprosthesis, which fills and anchors the device in the aneurysm sac. Within the framework of a clinical trial, the quality-of-life evaluation of patients treated using this type of device was carried out. Materials and Method. A cohort study was conducted from 2008 to 2011 comparing the quality of life (QOL) of patients after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair with either the new endovascular treatment method (EVAR) or open surgery (OS). Each group comprised 20 patients, and the quality-of life-evaluation was performed using the SF-36 questionnaire before operation, 1 month after operation, and 1 year after operation. Results. One month after operation, an improved QOL was documented in the EVAR group (47 [SD, 3] in the EVAR group vs. 38 [SD, 3] in the OS group, P 〈 0.001). One year after operation, a significant improvement in QOL persisted although the difference between the groups diminished (48 [SD, 4] in the EVAR group vs. 42 [SD, 3] in the OS group, P 〈 0.001). Conclusions. The patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms who underwent EVAR using the new sac-anchoring endoprosthesis have improved health-related quality of life compared to the patients undergoing open surgical repair. The improvement in quality of life remained slightly better in the EVAR group 1 year after operation.

Abstract: Modified lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) pebbles with additions of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are designed as a possible tritium breeder ceramic for the helium cooled pebble bed (HCPB) test blanket module. Additions of TiO2 were chosen to enhance mechanical properties of the tritium breeder pebbles. The formation of radiation defects (RD) in the modified Li4SiO4 pebbles with a different content of TiO2 was studied by X-ray induced luminescence (XRL) technique. After XRL measurements the accumulated RD were also analyzed by thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry. XRL spectra consist of several bands with maxima at around 430, 490, 690, 700 and 800 nm. The XRL band with a peak at 490 nm could be associated with intrinsic defects in Li4SiO4 matrix whereas all the other maxima at lower photon energies are the result of the addition of TiO2.
