This qualitative research utilized multimodal data collection to examine students' voices to assess how they perceived the cognitive engagement dimension during emergency remote teaching (ERT). Data were gathered from 60 students from three higher education institutions in Indonesia's urban areas. The findings revealed that the ERT environment requires students to self-regulate their learning by employing their preferred strategies to comprehend the material. Moreover, they engage in meaningful learning by relating content to their prior experiences and knowledge. Students also believe that teachers play a vital role in ERT as authoritative figures and focal learning points. They view teachers as the main agents for fostering and enhancing their cognitive engagement. This study draws attention to the need for continuous teacher professional development in ERT by concentrating on students' needs. 〈 /p 〉 〈 /div 〉 〈 /div 〉

Abstract: Education is confronted with the issue of learning loss during the pandemic, although cognitive and affective engagement in online academic activities can serve as a countermeasure. This research examines how students' cognitive and affective engagement in tasks is associated with online academic activity. This quantitative study, conducted on 208 students at private universities in Jakarta, employs an observational technique and an explanatory design. This study aims to determine the adequacy of the measuring model and its structural models used to examine the link between intrinsic motivation components. The research findings indicate that students' cognitive and affective engagement is on track, as determined by their task persistence which can be established through effort and performance review when completing activities. Evaluating effort and performance begins with self-awareness as a foundation for orientation and commitment. This study paves the way for further investigation of other findings that indicate the need to allocate and optimize time for academic activities while also educating and encouraging students' persistence. Without tremendous effort and evaluation on the part of students, time on task in virtual online learning can result in low-quality performance. These findings should inspire the teacher to create a lesson plan that engages students by considering the fundamental components of learning, such as the students' characteristics and backgrounds.

Abstract: Virtual laboratory (VLab) has been observed for its function for the merit of online course delivery. It is believed that the existence of VLab may enhance students’ academic achievements. However, the study which researches its impact on the students’ independence is still limited. This systematic review study aims to determine students’ self-regulated learning (SRL) on the use of VLab by implementing PICOS (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Study Design). Further, we examined whether the strategies of SRL, such as cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, behavioral, and contextual strategies owned by students at higher education levels, increased because of leveraging the VLab. We identified 267 articles from Scopus and the Web of Science databases, then utilized the PRISMA guidelines to specify the 249 eligible articles. As a result, only 20 articles passed the criteria of the feasibility stage (1) higher education level, (2) informing online learning, (3) containing materials discussing VLab, and (4) representing the concept of SRL. However, the finding showed that all interventions had positively affected students’ performance. Based on the analyzed data, we confirm that VLab can be considered for providing the learning experience since it bridges the gap between students’ prior knowledge and experience and provides an active social experience.

Abstract: English Writing for Academic Purposes (EWAP) seems daunting for higher education students in the Indonesian context. Genuinely, the ability of EWAP is one of the study skills required in the academic field. Preliminary research has shown that EWAP materials have not been identified based on students’ needs. This study focuses on the students’ need analysis of the EWAP materials, including confirming the quality of the task-based material design that enhances the students’ skills of the EWAP. The study used the educational research and development method, involving non-English learners from a private college in Indonesia. Researchers used the test, the semi-structured interview, and the questionnaire as instruments. The observation was also carried out to describe implementing the task-based material design of the EWAP. The results indicate that students need task-based material as an authentic EWAP material that focuses on learning to communicate through interaction. It also gives them the ability to focus not just on the use of languages but also on the learning process itself. The task-based EWAP materials have a significant influence on the development of students’ writing skills. As a result, this approach is well suited to foster a learning desire to write in a context-approximately as a means of expressing their intentions. Besides, the study’s findings show that students were very enthusiastic about engaging in the learning process.

Abstract:  This study investigates the types of interlanguage of adjective phrase construction that students made when writing English descriptive text. The errors function as a system and can be used to determine interlanguage. The researcher employed a cross-sectional design and used descriptive qualitative methods. The descriptive texts of the students were collected as primary data at the same time but different levels of proficiency. Thirty tenth-grade students from Matauli Senior High School in Central Tapanuli, North Sumatera, participated in the study. Error Analysis (EA) and Interlanguage theories were central to the data analysis (IL). The findings revealed that students' English production is still interlanguage because their writings contain a wide range of errors regarding adjective phrases. There are 113 errors in total. There are up to 70 items of omission errors (62%), 19 items of misformation errors (17%), 15 items of misordering errors (13%), and 9 items of addition errors (8%). Furthermore, four processes were identified as contributing to students' interlanguage in this study, with the student's native language having the greatest influence on their English production (Language transfer (71%), second language learning strategies (14%), false concepts hypothesized (9.7%), and overgeneralization (5.3%)). The findings also revealed that both interlingual and intralingual sources have caused errors in second language learning. It can be concluded that students' competence at each level is insufficient. Due to their system, they are on the interlanguage continuum, which has a structurally intermediate status between the native and target languages.

Abstract: Students in vocational programs must have English writing abilities, following industry standards. Despite this, writing is a challenging skill. This article examines the voice of vocational students in connection to their English writing proficiency. Sixty-one students from a private vocational school are involved in the research. This study was designed as descriptive research. Data on students' voices are collected using a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Additionally, they are evaluated utilizing triangulation techniques. According to the research, the majority of students continue to struggle with communicating their thoughts in writing. In addition, they struggle to organize their sentences into paragraphs. Moreover, their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary is weak, as is their understanding of writing mechanisms. These conditions decrease their motivation to participate in the writing process actively. It is vital because vocational students should be the source of industrial employment. Therefore, the English teacher is strongly urged to develop a lesson plan that considers the students' requirements, profiles, and prior writing skills, using need analysis and diagnostic evaluation. In addition, it is strongly recommended that students engage in collaborative writing through any medium, including technology, to assist them. In addition, it is crucial to frequently assess the material in light of the industry's requirements for writing abilities competencies. The concept of differentiated teaching can also be employed to assist students' distinct development of writing skills.
